An informative post about Malaysia.
Yoodo has finally enabled Voice Over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) on its network, enabling its users to make clearer phone calls even in areas with poor signal, as long as they are connected to Wi-Fi. Despite the move being long overdue, only certain Android phones [PDF] from brands such as HONOR, Huawei, Xiaomi, Nokia, Samsung, and Vivo currently support the telco’s new feature.
The Celcom sub-brand had enabled Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) just earlier this year for both Android and iOS. For VoWiFi though, Yoodo decided to roll out the feature for Android users first, saying that support for iPhones will be coming later on but the company did not give a timeline for when this might happen.
To enable VoWiFi on a supported phone, you need to go into the settings, tap on the Mobile Network, go into the Mobile Data section, and there should be a Wi-Fi Calling or VoWiFi option there. If your phone is on the supported list and you don’t see Wi-Fi Calling in the settings, you might need to wait for an update.
Yoodo might be late to the game, but the carrier is now on par with the features offered by many of its competitors while still allowing its customers to customise mobile plans. Its parent company, Celcom, similarly took a while to roll out VoWiFi to its users, enabling the feature in June earlier this year.
Even though it is one of the country’s major telcos, Celcom also had a gap between implementing VoWiFi for Android and iOS, with iPhone support coming in almost two months after the feature’s initial debut on its network. The obvious benefit of Wi-Fi calling over VoLTE is that it doesn’t require cell service to make calls, as long as your line is still active.
Additionally, it also allows you to send and receive SMSes over Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, Yoodo says that the feature currently cannot be used while roaming.
