The Proton X70 has been a runaway success, and has single-handedly turned the tide around for the national carmaker. But it’s been more than three years since the model was launched here in Malaysia, and it’s about time we get a mid-cycle facelift. As luck would have it (not really), Proton has now introduced the 2022 X70 MC update, and while it’s not necessarily a “facelift” per se, underneath the same-same exterior actually lies a pretty big change…
With the 2022 update, the Proton X70 now gets a 1.5-litre TGDi turbocharged three-cylinder engine underneath its bonnet (aside from the sole 1.8 TGDi Premium 2WD variant), replacing the existing 1.8 TGDi that has served the C-segment SUV since its launch back in 2018.
The new 1.5 TGDi engine is the exact same unit found on the Proton X50 Flagship, which means there will be a drop in power output – from the previous 184 hp and 300 Nm, to now 177 hp and 245 Nm. But that’s all just numbers; how much does it actually matter in actual driving conditions?
