An informative post on Penang.

As you walk along the quaint streets of George Town, you will notice some traditional shops are still operating. Shops that’s not brightly lit with dried meats hanging above the counter. This is how the 185-year old Kwongtuck Sundries & Liquors Sdn Bhd looks like. But, a tad of modernisation has been fused by launching a website to reach customers across Malaysia.

Recently, Kwongtuck Sundries & Liquors Sdn Bhd won platinum status under Cultural Continuity Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) Heritage Recognition and Award 2020. Woo Shee Khow, the fourth-generation owner told that it is all due to his predecessors’ hard work operating the family business for more than a century.

It all started when a man called Woo Fook Yin travelled all the way to then-Malaya from China with hopes of earning a better living. He established Kwongtuck in 1836, initially selling liquours and sundry items from China, Hong Kong and Thailand. Over the years, Kwong Tuck shifted to selling more dried seafood and foodstuffs, canned food and preserved meats.

Liquors such as Bee Chew, medicated Samsu, Kuo Loo, Hua Tiao Chew are also sold here. Other available items include wine biscuits, Chinese herbs, lye water, and Lap Cheong.
