Despite the scorching heat, thousands of Hindu devotees and tourists gathered at Jalan Kebun Bunga here in George Town, Penang for the Thaipusam celebration.

Music reverberated in the air as devotees, garbed in saffron and yellow, mingled freely with visitors as part of the annual celebration here.
Jalan Kebun Bunga, the annual venue for the celebration on the island, was lined up with some 50 'thanneerpanthal' (refreshment stalls, selling drinks and delicious things to eat) decorated with coconut leaves, colourful clothes and images of Hindu deities.
Both devotees and tourists were seen stopping at the thaneerpanthal for refreshments and food, and to seek shelter from the heat.
