VISITORS to this year’s Penang Hot Air Balloon Fiesta have been advised to use public transport to avoid being caught in a traffic congestion during the two-day event.

Penang Global Tourism CEO Ooi Chok Yan said the fiesta on Feb 9-10 at the Polo Ground is expected to attract hundreds of spectators.

“We have arranged free shuttle buses which will operate from 7am to 10pm at three points on the island going to the venue.

“The locations are at Rapid Penang Terminal (Jetty), Tesco Tanjung Tokong and Queensbay Mall with 30-minute and an hour interval,” he said at a press conference at Komtar recently.

Ooi said visitors could also opt for the MyTeksi app which is offering RM8 discount for passengers using the promotion code – HAB16.

“The Hop-On Hop-Off bus by City Route also has extra drop-off stops near Polo Ground on both days,” he said.

Some 100 personnel from Rela, Penang Island City Council and the police will be on duty to monitor and coordinate the traffic situation during the event.

Ooi added that Jalan Tull would be turned into a one-way street on both days.

“We are also arranging various parking spaces for motorists at different locations.

“There are direction signages along the routes to assist them.

“Motorists are discouraged to park at the Penang Hospital ground,” he added.

AKA Balloon Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Izzati Khairudin said 15 hot air balloons would be displayed.

Also present was George Town traffic police chief Asst Supt Noh Idris.
