Razer Blade 14 With AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX Now Available; Retails From RM12599

April 29, 2022 By Keith

A really good post on Malaysia.

Razer officially announced its refreshed Blade 14 Ryzen for the Malaysian market. As its official name suggest, the laptop houses an AMD Ryzen instead of one from Intel, but more to the point, the new laptop now features AMD’s top-of-the-line Ryzen 6000 series mobile CPUs, the Ryzen 9 6900HX with an integrated Radeon 680M mobile graphics.

Moving down the specs list, the new Razer Blade 14 Ryzen comes with 16GB DDR5 RAM running at 4800MHz; an upgrade from the original DDR4 RAM used with the 2021 version of the laptop. Additionally, the laptop comes in three GPU configurations, starting from the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, and RTX 3070 Ti, and the RTX 3080 Ti serving as the highest tier configuration.

Having said that, do note that which GPU configuration you choose also determines the display panel that comes with it: For the model with the RTX 3060, the display’s native resolution is set at Full HD, with a 144Hz refresh rate. For those getting the RTX 3070 Ti or RTX 3080 Ti SKUs, those two share the same QHD (2560 x 1440) resolution panel, which also has a higher refresh rate of 165Hz. Other specifications include 1TB of NVMe Gen4 storage, up from the NVMe Gen3 used in the previous model.

Price-wise, the new Razer Blade 14 Ryzen starts at RM12599, but as of this publication, we’re still having difficulty finding the official pricing for the other two SKUs. For that matter, the laptops are already being listed on the brand’s US site, but not our local store page, let alone its online stores at Lazada and Shopee.

The Huracan is Lamborghini’s most popular model ever, with 20,000 units produced

April 24, 2022 By Keith

An informative post about Penang Malaysia.

While the Urus may have sold 15,000 units in just four years, making it Lamborghini fastest-selling model, it’s not actually the marque’s most popular model ever… at least not yet. The title falls to the Huracan, which has just achieved another production milestone, with the 20,000th unit recently rolling off the marque’s Sant’Agata Bolognese production facility.

Agata Bolognese

Finished in Grigio Acheso Matte and destined for a customer in Monaco, the milestone car number 20,000 is the track-focused Huracan STO, pretty much the hardest and fastest Huracan in the raging bull’s line-up – just too bad it’s not quite the right timing for it to be the latest Tecnica model.

In this high-performance variant, the 5.2-litre 640 hp and 565 Nm of torque, with drive sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox for a 0-100 km/h time of three seconds, and 0-200 km/h in nine seconds, onward to a top speed of 310 km/h.

“At its unveiling we said that with the Huracan, Lamborghini is writing the next chapter in its great history,” said Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and CEO, Stephan Winkelmann. “The Huracan has delivered an evolution of design, technological know-how, driving adventures, track records and sales records since its launch.”

Lamborghini Huracan

Now eight years into its lifespan, the Lamborghini Huracan model line-up now comprises 12 street-legal and three racing variants, the former in both coupe and convertible body styles. According to the company, 71% of customers have chosen the fixed-roof variant, and the other 29% the topless.

The Huracan’s best-selling market has been the United States, where over 32% of them were delivered over the last eight years, followed by the United Kingdom and Greater China. The high demand for the Huracan also contributed largely to the company’s 2021 sales record, accounting for 2,586 units of the 8,405 vehicles total that Lamborghini sold last year.

Stephan Winkelmann

As we briefly mentioned above, the latest addition to the Huracan line-up is the recently-unveiled Tecnica variant. The rear-wheel-drive model claims to be the best of both worlds for both track and open road driving, as it shares the same engine with the STO, but still comes with many of the creature comforts one would expect from a street-going car – including rear-wheel steering.

Lamborghini is also heavily rumoured to be introducing another variant of the Huracan later this year, and has been said that it’ll likely be an off-road oriented model based on the Sterrato concept it unveiled in 2019!

Elon Musk Sued For Delaying Twitter Stake Disclosure

April 14, 2022 By Keith

A great post on Malaysia.

Elon Musk is now being sued by former Twitter shareholders who aren’t happy about not being informed earlier of Musk’s recent purchase of the company’s shares. The class action suit claims that the shareholders missed out on the price surge because the billionaire waited too long to disclose the stake to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

On 4 April, an SEC filing revealed that the Tesla CEO had acquired a 9.2% stake in Twitter, making him the platform’s biggest shareholder. When the news broke, the company’s stock value surged 27% at one point, its biggest intraday jump in years.

Former shareholders led by Marc Rasella said the delayed disclosure let Musk buy more Twitter shares at lower prices, while defrauding them into selling at “artificially deflated” prices. Musk actually purchased the shares on 14 March and US securities law requires investors to disclose within 10 days when they have purchased more than 5% of a company — in this case, the deadline was on 24 March.

Rasella said he sold 35 Twitter shares for an average price of US$39.23 (~RM165.96) between March 25 and 29, while the price peaked at US$50.98 (~RM215.67) on the day after Elon Musk disclosed his stake. The billionaire recently turned down an offer to join Twitter’s board and has also deleted his tweets regarding his suggestions on what changes the platform should implement.

Blackberry 5G Phone Officially Dead; OnwardMobility Announces Closure

February 23, 2022 By Keith

A great article about Malaysia.

Two weeks ago, a rumour suggests that US startup company OnwardMobility has cancelled its ownership of the Blackberry name, as well as the development of a new smartphone under the brand. Unfortunately, this has been officially confirmed by the company, which also announced its imminent closure in a statement earlier today.

To recap, the startup picked up the rights to develop and release new Blackberry devices back in August 2020. Prior to that, the phone brand itself parted ways with its then-partner, Chinese company TCL, which have developed its phones since 2016. OnwardMobility originally planned to release a new 5G-enabled Blackberry smartphone last year, but failed to deliver this promise.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that OnwardMobility will be shutting down, and we will no longer be proceeding with the development of an ultra-secure smartphone with a physical keyboard,” the company wrote in the statement. “We share your disappointment in this news and assure you this is not the outcome we worked and hoped for.”

Blackberry dead OnwardMobility closure
OnwardMobility’s prior announcement on its website back in January this year.

OnwardMobility did not provide any explanation to why it had cancelled the project and decided to shut down entirely. Ironically, its announcement of closure arrives a month after the company denied earlier rumours of cancellation, and even assured that the phone’s development was still on track despite encountering “various delays.”

While the world won’t be seeing another Blackberry phone anytime soon, the brand itself is actually holding strong in a different field: cybersecurity. Though it no longer focuses on developing in-house hardware for the mobile market, the company has offered its branding to third-party phone manufacturers as part of its business strategy. That being said, only time will tell if the Blackberry name will be featured on mobile phones ever again.

Apple’s Next Launch Event To Take Place On 14 September

September 7, 2021 By Keith

A really good post on Penang Malaysia.

For the past one to two weeks, there have been rampant rumours which claimed that Apple has planned to have a special launch event this month. True enough, the company has just officially announced the date for its next event.

According to the media invite as well as its US website, the event is scheduled to take place at 10:00 AM PDT on 14 September which is equivalent to 1:00 AM Malaysia time on 15 September. This round of Apple’s special event will once again take place virtually as the threat of COVID-19 is still at large throughout the world.

We’re California Streaming on September 14th. See you real soon. 🏞 #AppleEvent pic.twitter.com/OjOvJFXlHd

— Greg Joswiak (@gregjoz) September 7, 2021

Greg Joswiak, the company’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing has tweeted a short clip to mark the occasion. The clip is essentially a demonstration of the AR feature that you can activate through your iPhone and iPad by tapping the glowing Apple logo on the event section of Apple US website.

It is really hard to guess what Apple is trying to hint through the images and AR easter egg that accompanied today’s announcement. However, the “California streaming” tagline does remind us of a very famous song from 1960s, California Dreamin’ which was made famous by The Mamas and The Papas.

At the moment, among new products that are expected to be revealed at the upcoming event includes iPhone 13 (or iPhone 12s, depending on who you asked), Apple Watch Series 7, and next-generation AirPods. Expect to hear more rumours to make their way into the Internet, now that there is only one week to go before the event takes place.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 ‘Robotaxi’ self-driving taxi to begin operation in 2023

September 2, 2021 By Keith

An interesting post on Penang.

Hyundai and Motional, a global leader in driverless technology have revealed the IONIQ 5 ‘Robotaxi’ with Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities, allowing it to safely operate without a driver. For more info on what Level 4 entails, click here.

The IONIQ 5 robotaxi is Motional’s first commercial vehicle and will begin transporting public passengers in 2023 through a partnership with ride-sharing provider, Lyft. The robotaxis will be deployed in major cities in the US, starting with Las Vegas.

Casper Turbo

There are over 30 sensors attached to the robotaxi including cameras radars and lidar sensors, to provide 360-degree view, hi-resolution images, and ultra-long range object detection for safe autonomous driving.

Motional’s proven driverless technology will be the focal point of the IONIQ 5, with self-learning abilities based on real-world data to allow the car to safely navigate itself through different driving situations and environments.

driverless technology

Inside, the IONIQ 5 not only provides space for work and relaxation during the autonomous ride but also rider-focussed interfaces to allow riders to interact with the vehicle; to make an unscheduled stop for example.

The adorable Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV looks half the size it actually is…check it out here!

“Through our strategic partnership with Hyundai Motor Group, it enables us to manufacture a robotaxi that’s both highly safe and reliable, and is cost-optimised for global production. We’re focused on mass commercialisation, and the IONIQ 5 robotaxi is built for that purpose,” said Motional, President and CEO, Karl Iagnemma.

Karl Iagnemma

To ensure the safety of the riders, Motional is able to re-route the vehicle to a new and safer path in the event of an emergency with remote vehicle assistance.

Motional has so far moved hundreds of thousands of customers through its self-driving service on the Lyft network in Las Vegas, the world’s most-established public robotaxi fleet.

Hyundai’s new Casper Turbo is even smaller than the Perodua Ativa but we still want one! More about it here!

TSMC Allegedly Increasing Chip Prices By 20 Percent Amidst Ongoing Shortage

August 28, 2021 By Keith

An informative article on Penang.

TSMC is reportedly increasing the prices of its chips, the company told its clients earlier in the week. According to a report by WSJ (paywall), the semiconductor manufacturer plans on raising its prices by as much as 10% for its advanced chips and 20% for less advanced components.

The announcement clearly isn’t happy or welcome news, given that the world is still suffering from an ongoing chip shortage that many experts and industry leaders say could last well into 2022 and the early months of 2023. On top of that, TSMC’s price hike will most definitely be reflected within the final bill of finished products that use its components.

That list, by the way, unsurprisingly includes electronic goods like laptops, phones, PC components, and game consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Product that, by the way, are made by equally big name brands like Apple, AMD, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm, to name a few.

TSMC chip fabrication

There is, of course, a silver lining of sorts in TSMC’s announcements. Raising the prices means that, for the first time since the pandemic began, demand for its chips could ultimately reduce and, in turn, take some pressure off already constricted supplies. At least, until its new factories in the US and Taiwan become operational.

The Honda NSX will return for a third generation, likely as an EV

August 25, 2021 By Keith

A great article about Penang.

Honda is sunsetting the second-generation NSX after this year, with the last 350 or so units of the hybrid supercar being the recently-unveiled Type S. Although it’s farewell for now, it seems like the Honda NSX might not be as dead as we thought.

As reported by The Drive, Acura Vice President and Brand Officer Jon Ikeda said in a recent interview: “If you notice, we make an NSX when there’s something we want to say. The first-gen was gas. Second-gen was a hybrid. There’s gonna be another one.”

When prodded further if it means that the next NSX will be an EV, though, Ikeda refused to comment further, but apparently replied with a smile.

Acura

The second-generation NSX was pretty much a financial disaster for Honda. Although highly praised by reviewers for its performance, it just never sold very well throughout its short five-year life, selling only 128 units in the U.S. last year.

The accounting book looks even worse when you take into account how much it costs Honda to make one, due to the car’s complex powertrain system consisting of not just two turbochargers, but also three electric motors.

The Honda NSX Type S is a 608 hp swansong to the reborn cult icon. Read more about it here!

Honda NSX

Honda, of course, knew all about this. Speaking to MotorTrend on the same topic, Ikeda said: “We didn’t go into it to make a lot of money.” Instead, the NSX – like all flagship halo models – is also Honda’s marketing tool designed to bring people into showrooms, all while acting as an engineering exercise to help the Japanese carmaker build better electrified cars in the future.

“We learned a lot about electrification and fun to drive, which is a staple,” Ikeda added. And of course, aside from these perfectly logical explanation, Honda’s making a new NSX just because they want to make one – and there’s nothing wrong with that.

“We didn’t want to let the NSX die on the vine either. To go quietly into the night is not what it deserves.”

Mugen’s body kit for the all-new Honda Civic Hatchback is what you’d call “tastefully done”. Check it out here!

Jon Ikeda

So how long do we have to wait to see the new NSX? It took Honda 10 years to revive the NSX after phasing out the first-generation supercar in 2005, so we’d say don’t hold your breath.

Although, with the rate that the entire automotive industry is accelerating towards EVs, the next Honda NSX might still come sooner than we thought. I mean, nobody expected Honda to make a new Integra, but that’s exactly what they’re doing.

The Honda NSX Type S is a 608 hp swansong to the reborn cult icon

August 15, 2021 By Keith

A great post on Malaysia.

Honda has announced that it will be sunsetting the second-generation NSX at the end of 2022, just six years after the model was first unveiled. To see out the model, Honda has just unveiled the NSX Type S at the Monterey Car Week as its one last hurrah – and we’ve gotta say, what a way to send off the reborn cult icon.

The main upgrade for this run-out model is in the performance department. Specifically, the 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 hybrid powertrain now churns out a total of 608 hp and 667 Nm of torque, 27 hp and 22 Nm more than the regular NSX.

aerodynamic devices

The power bump is largely thanks to new turbochargers that are borrowed from the NSX GT3 Evo race car, with a 6% increase in boost pressure. There are also new fuel injectors and improved intercoolers, and on the electric side, the batteries now have a 20% bump in capacity, and 10% increase in output.

Honda has also tweaked the NSX Type S’ nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox, with a new gear ratio of 8.050:1 (down from 10.382:1). The gearbox can now apparently up-shift by up to 50% quicker, and also has a new Rapid Downshift Mode that allows it to skip gears when moving to a smaller cog.

Watch the old and new Honda NSX battle it out in a touge battle!

Honda NSX

Other upgrades come in the form of retuned dampers, updated ECU software, new five-split-spoke forged alloy (in matte Shark Grey or gloss Berlina Black) for a 10- and 20-mm wider track front and back, and new bespoke Pirelli P Zero tyres that offers up to 6% more lateral grip.

And on top of that, there are also new aerodynamic devices in the form of new front splitters, side sills, rear spoiler, and a new rear diffuser that’s modelled after the GT3 Evo race car. All in, Honda claims that the new Type S laps the Suzuka Circuit a whopping two seconds faster than the outgoing NSX – not bad at all for a final upgrade.

Malaysia

On the aesthetics end, the Honda NSX has been given a pretty significant makeover for the Type S, particularly on the front fascia. There’s a new hexagonal grille that’s paired to a sharper nose, while at the back, the rear bumpers have also been significantly reworked with more angular vents at the side, surrounding the aforementioned new carbon fibre diffuser.

The head- and tail-lights are both darkened, alongside the blacked-out wing mirrors, door handles, exhaust tips, and badges. The roof is now made with carbon fibre as standard, and customers can also opt for a Lightweight Package with carbon fibre engine cover, interior trims, and carbon-ceramic brake discs that supposedly drop the kerb weight by 26.2 kg.

Some good news instead: Honda is bringing back the Integra next year! Read more about it here.

Pirelli

Just 350 units of the new Honda NSX Type S will be built, and it’s the only variant that Honda is making for the rest of the model’s life, until end-2022. 300 out of the total is earmarked for the United States (wearing the Acura badge), and 70 of them in the new Gotham Gray exterior colour. So long, NSX.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 and Z Fold3 Price In Malaysia May Start From RM4,199

August 15, 2021 By Keith

An interesting post about Penang.

During the Galaxy Unpacked August 2021 event earlier this week, Samsung has unveiled two new foldables in the form of Galaxy Z Flip3 and Z Fold3. While the company has yet to reveal their availability in our market, we believe we may have stumbled upon their local pricing.

Over the years, we would visit Celcom, Digi, Maxis, and U Mobile’s websites whenever there is a significant smartphone launch by major brands including Samsung to search for information regarding local releases. The majority of the time we couldn’t find anything though until the brands themselves revealed such information to the public.

Celcom
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 in folded mode.

But it looks like things are different for the newly announced foldables. By using “Galaxy Z” as the search keyword on Digi’s website earlier today, to our surprise, the result that we received includes both devices.

According to the listing on Digi’s website, the retail price of Z Flip3 with 256GB internal storage is RM4,199. On another hand, the Z Fold3 256GB is listed as RM6,699 while the 512GB variant goes for RM7,199.

All these screenshots were captured on Digi’s website at 11:51 PM today.

Maxis

As a comparison, the starting price of Z Flip3 in the United States is US$999.99 (~RM4,238) but that is for the 128GB model. Over there, the 256GB variant of the phone goes for US$1049.99 (~RM4,450) which is noticeably higher than Malaysia.

This also applies to the Z Fold3 as well since the US pricing for the 256GB model is US$1799.99 (~RM7,628) while the 512GB unit is available for US$1899.99 (~RM8,052). Additionally, the launch price of the original Z Flip and Z Fold2 in Malaysia were RM5,888 and RM7,999 respectively, if you want to take their predecessors into consideration.

Of course, we still have to wait for the official announcement from Samsung Malaysia itself regarding the price tag for Z Flip3 and Z Fold3. That being said, the existence of these listings on Digi’s website may suggest that the announcement may take place very soon.
