Authorities Began To Investigate AirAsia Flight Delays

May 10, 2022 By Keith

An interesting post on Penang.

Several government agencies have launched an investigation regarding delays that were experienced by AirAsia passengers as of late. Among them is the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, as revealed by its minister, Alexander Nanti Linggi through his social media channels yesterday.

The revelation was accompanied by screenshots of complaints from several customers including former Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Wilfred Madius Tangau. Interesting enough, one of the screenshots also includes a post by Twitter user folkloreswifty who observed the airline’s usage of the word “rescheduled” as opposed to “delayed”:

Air Asia Tunda, Jadual Semula Penerbangan

Sebagai menteri yang ditugaskan menjaga pengguna, saya mengambil maklum mengenai rungutan, aduan dan keluhan disuarakan pengguna berhubung kelewatan penerbangan Air Asia, membabitkan pelbagai destinasi dalam negara. pic.twitter.com/lpZMoFJjDk

— Alexander Nanta Linggi (@AlexNantaLinggi) May 9, 2022

It is not known how true is the claim but surely, the tweet has garnered massive attention as it has since been retweeted by almost 5,000 other Twitter users at the time this article goes live. Meanwhile, Alexander has also revealed that his ministry is working together with the Ministry of Transportation to look into the matter.

He also noted that the authorities have noticed the complaints from AirAsia customers since late last month. While he said both ministries will work together to sort out the issue, Alexander also said that consumers should submit an official complaint to the airline first before contacting the Malaysia Aviation Commission (MAVCOM).

Even though he is not wrong at all as it is indeed part of MAVCOM’s complaint SOP, the irony is still not lost on us because it is quite clear from those screenshots that passengers were quite appalled by all the delays that they have experienced. If we have to guess, they most likely want MAVCOM to just come in and put its authority into action.

MAVCOM FlySmart
MAVCOM has established a dedicated platform called FlySmart, complete with its own mobile app, to handle complaints related to the aviation industry.

As the statement didn’t include any reference to penalties or legal actions that AirAsia may face from the investigation, we do wonder if the latest move by KPDNHEP and MOT has an actual “bite” to it. Furthermore, AirAsia has yet to respond to the statement made by the minister even though it has been more than 18 hours since it was published, although we still like to believe that the statement didn’t simply fly over the airline.

AMD’s Next High-End Laptop CPU Series To Be Called “Dragon Range”

May 5, 2022 By Keith

An interesting post about Penang Malaysia.

AMD recently let consumers in on the next stage of its laptop CPU roadmap. Come 2023, the successor to the chipmaker’s next-generation Zen4 laptop series CPUs will go by the name “Dragon Range” and will be aimed towards “extreme gaming laptops”.

The good word comes by way of the good Dr. Ian Cutress, the former editor at Anandtech turned industry analyst. According to Cutress, AMD’s Dragon Range CPU lineup will indeed be the Ryzen 7000 mobile series, and that it will replace the current HX mobile series processors, currently being used for high-end gaming laptops on the market.

Cutress’ provided slide also shows that the new Dragon Range lineup will ship out with a TDP of more than 55W, and will support DDR5 memory and the PCIe 5.0 interface exclusively, while being aimed laptops that are approximately 20mm thicker. Further, and in what we can only surmise as an effort by the chipmaker to retain its customer’s attention span, the Dragon Range will take up the “HS” suffix for its CPU.

Well there we go, @AMD Dragon Range replaces the HX market, DDR5. Phoenix in the more traditional H market, LPDDR5 only. Process node not mentioned. Graphics not mentioned. $AMD pic.twitter.com/4BCYQSMe1z

— . (@IanCutress) May 3, 2022

On a side note, the same slide shows that the mobile CPU lineup a tier below Dragon Range, codename Phoenix, will also support the same DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 standards, but will operate at a TDP between 35W and 45W. And ship out for “thin and light gaming” laptops that are thinner than 20mm.

Beyond that, there is no further details about the Dragon Range, save except that its future processors should be available starting next year. In the mean time, AMD is planning on breaking gaming out to its own financial segment through the continued manufacturing of semi-custom parts for third-party companies, such as the chips used in the PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam Deck.

Elon Musk Sued For Delaying Twitter Stake Disclosure

April 14, 2022 By Keith

A great post on Malaysia.

Elon Musk is now being sued by former Twitter shareholders who aren’t happy about not being informed earlier of Musk’s recent purchase of the company’s shares. The class action suit claims that the shareholders missed out on the price surge because the billionaire waited too long to disclose the stake to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

On 4 April, an SEC filing revealed that the Tesla CEO had acquired a 9.2% stake in Twitter, making him the platform’s biggest shareholder. When the news broke, the company’s stock value surged 27% at one point, its biggest intraday jump in years.

Former shareholders led by Marc Rasella said the delayed disclosure let Musk buy more Twitter shares at lower prices, while defrauding them into selling at “artificially deflated” prices. Musk actually purchased the shares on 14 March and US securities law requires investors to disclose within 10 days when they have purchased more than 5% of a company — in this case, the deadline was on 24 March.

Rasella said he sold 35 Twitter shares for an average price of US$39.23 (~RM165.96) between March 25 and 29, while the price peaked at US$50.98 (~RM215.67) on the day after Elon Musk disclosed his stake. The billionaire recently turned down an offer to join Twitter’s board and has also deleted his tweets regarding his suggestions on what changes the platform should implement.

Wordle Now Has Ad Trackers Hidden Inside

February 20, 2022 By Keith

An informative post about Malaysia.

Wordle was be web-based word game that took the internet by storm late last year. It would then be bought by news giant The New York Times last month, to the tune of a seven-figure sum. But since then, it looks like the game is now loaded with third-party ad trackers.

Software engineer and architect Ben Adida shared this discovery on Twitter, showing the way Wordle’s new owner is deploying the game. Now that the game has been relocated to the news company’s own website, it is also free to add the usual sort of trackers that collect user data that is later presumably sold to third parties.

So no the NYT did not make Wordle harder or even change it all that much…. but can you imagine how hard it will be now if they had *any* plans to tweak it? Whew.

Separately, NYT didn’t change the game, but they sure changed the deployment. Lots more tracking. pic.twitter.com/HbrkF5o0eh

— Ben Adida (@benadida) February 16, 2022

It should not be surprising that an explosively popular web-based game that’s owned by a major corporation has ad trackers. After all, it’s one way The New York Times can recoup its massive purchase, and possibly also make money once that is done. After all, the game has remained free for all to play, where other games owned by the news company is locked behind a subscription.

Still, it’s certainly something to keep in mind, especially if you’re particularly concerned about this sort of thing. And don’t be surprised if you get more ads related to The New York Times if you’re still actively playing Wordle.

AMD Radeon RX 6950XT With 18Gbps Memory Rumoured For An April Launch

February 6, 2022 By Keith

A really good post about Malaysia.

AMD’s rumour mill has been churning hard of late, the latest gossip pertaining to a new desktop graphics card. Specifically, the word is that the card is a Radeon RX 6950XT and that it will be landing sometime in April this year.

The rumour first came about via YouTuber coreteks, who is known for having correctly predicted the arrival and existence of multiple AMD Radeon products and software features. Details about the 6950XT’s hardware specifications are, as you can imagine, still scarce, but based on what has been floating around the internet, the card could ship out with 18Gbps, up from 16Gbps of the 6900XT.

6950XT is planned for mid-april. There’s no 6850XT etc as far as I know 🤷

— coreteks (@coreteks) February 3, 2022

On paper, that’s should translate to a 12.5% improvement over the 6900XT, though at this point, there’s no indication as to just how much of an improvement that is going to be over team green’s own top-tier GeForce RTX 30 series or even Intel’s yet-to-be-released ARC Alchemist graphics card. On another note, coreteks also said that it doesn’t appear that a Radeon RX 6850XT is in the pipeline, meaning that the 6950XT could be the only Navi 21 card that will be getting a refresh.

Again, there’s still not a whole lot of information and as with all rumours, anything about the specifications for the 6950XT could change at a moment’s notice. With that said, we’ll just have to wait for more rumours on the matter to crop up.

Twitter Might Let Users Publish Blog-Like Tweets Via A Future Update

February 4, 2022 By Keith

A really good post about Malaysia.

Twitter may be planning to implement a new feature which would allow users to post longer tweets on its platform. The new format, known as Articles, was first discovered by researcher Jane Manchun Wong.

Apart from a very vague screenshot shared by the tipster, not much is known regarding Articles. Judging by its name, it is believed that users would be able to post tweets that would exceed Twitter’s 280-character limit. This is particularly useful for posting up announcements, blog-like posts or expansive comments, which can easily be shared by others on the platform.

Interestingly, Twitter did not deny or confirm Article’s development when inquired by CNET. “We’re always looking into new ways to help people start and engage in conversations on Twitter,” a company spokesperson told the publication. “We’ll share more about our work here soon.”

Twitter is working on “Twitter Articles” and the ability to create one within Twitter

— Jane Manchun Wong (@wongmjane) February 2, 2022

It is not known when exactly the new feature will be launched, and there’s also speculation that it may be exclusive to Twitter Blue subscribers. Regardless, we’ll only find out more about Articles when the platform is ready to officially announce it down the line.

Instagram May Soon Let You Record 90-Second Reels

February 3, 2022 By Keith

A great article about Penang.

Instagram is reportedly planning to increase the cap of its Reels videos to 90-seconds, according to tipster Alessandro Paluzzi. The change would enable the platform to compete with its competitors, namely TikTok and YouTube, which have already offered similarly longer short video formats to their users.

As usual with most discoveries by Paluzzi, the new option was found in the app’s code, which he then reverse engineered for testing. Based on the screenshot provided, not much has changed in the Reels interface, apart from the addition of the 90-second option in the duration selector on the left sidebar.

#Instagram is working on the possibility of creating #Reels lasting 90 seconds 👀 pic.twitter.com/M0KgJzQ90O

— Alessandro Paluzzi (@alex193a) February 1, 2022

While unofficially confirmed by Instagram, the possible addition of longer Reels recordings is very likely, especially if the platform intends to keep up with its competitors. On launch, the feature originally allowed users to record 15-second short clips, which gradually was increased to 30-seconds, and later to 60-seconds. The extended cap to 90-seconds would, without a doubt, enable creators to upload longer content such as skits, announcements, and so on – albeit being a mere 30-second increase.

Paluzzi did not mention when the platform plans to debut the new update to Reels. Similarly, Instagram has not confirmed if it is actually planning on implementing this change. Nevertheless, we’ll keep you posted should the increased cap become official in the near future.

OpenSea Admits More Than 80% Of NFTs On Its Marketplace Were Fake Or Plagiarised

February 1, 2022 By Keith

An informative post about Malaysia.

It looks like well-known NFT online marketplace OpenSea can’t catch a break. Last we’ve heard of the platform was regarding a major exploit that enabled attackers to purchase NFTs at below market value and later reselling them for large profits. This week, the platform has caused another stir among its users when it suddenly placed a restriction on its free minting tool – a decision that they backtracked shortly after receiving quite the backlash from its community.

For context, OpenSea’s minting service allows users to create and list an NFT without having to pay a “gas price”, which is basically a fee that crypto miners charge to write new data to a blockchain. Initially available to users without any restrictions, the platform suddenly updated its collection storefront contract without warning during the weekend – limiting its tool to only create up to five collections and 50 items per collection.

To address feedback we’ve received about our creator tools, we updated our collection storefront contract limits to only support the creation of up to 5 collections and 50 items per collection.

— OpenSea Support (@opensea_support) January 27, 2022

As mentioned earlier, the move was met with negative feedback and the restriction was removed on the following day. But what’s interesting is the reasoning behind why OpenSea had decided to implement the change in the first place. According to a follow-up thread posted on Twitter, the platform revealed that it has seen an exponential increase of misuse of its free minting tool, where 80% of NFTs that were created with it have been confirmed to be fake, plagiarised, and spam.

“Every decision we make, we make with our creators in mind. We originally built our shared storefront contract to make it easy for creators to onboard into the space,” OpenSea tweeted. “In addition to reversing the decision, we’re working through a number of solutions to ensure we support our creators while deterring bad actors.”

However, we’ve recently seen misuse of this feature increase exponentially.
Over 80% of the items created with this tool were plagiarized works, fake collections, and spam.

— OpenSea (@opensea) January 27, 2022

Additionally, the platform promises to first preview any significant changes with its community before rolling them out. OpenSea did not reveal what it plans to do with the large number of bogus NFTs that have been discovered in its marketplace at this time.

While there have been many success stories involving individuals who’ve managed to make a fortune from selling NFTs, there are also plenty of negative ones around. Plagiarism and scams being the most common from the latter, with thieves impersonating content creators, artists, and photographers on marketplaces to sell artworks stolen from them. Hopefully OpenSea’s official recent acknowledgement will finally see it addressing the issue, or at least provide a wider awareness among the NFT community.

GTA Trilogy Remaster PC Pulled From Rockstar Launcher Because Of “Files Unintentionally Included”

November 15, 2021 By Keith

An interesting article about Penang.

To say that the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy Remaster has had a storm of issues would be the understatement of the week. Despite having a 11 November release date, those who pre-ordered the GTA Trilogy Remaster got access to it ahead of schedule. And now, the game remains unavailable on the Rockstar launcher on PC.

Annoucing on Twitter, Rockstar Games claims that the games remain unavailable as the publisher removes “files unintentionally included in these versions”. The company did not include details as to what they are. But internet sleuths have found a multitude of items that were in the original games, but were not supposed to be in the GTA Trilogy Remaster.

The Rockstar Games Launcher is now online, but GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is unavailable to play or purchase as we remove files unintentionally included in these versions. We’re sorry for the disruption and hope to have correct ones up soon. https://t.co/NiMNXUKCVh

— Rockstar Support (@RockstarSupport) November 13, 2021

These range from music that were in the original but not licensed for the remaster to the inclusion of developer comments from way back when. Also included specifically in the San Andreas remaster, according to VGC, was code for the infamous hot coffee mini game that Rockstar had to scrub before re-releasing the game.

Lol the code for hot coffee was left in the gta remasters pic.twitter.com/JCVn5JSZUD

— secretagentmammal (@the_agent_man) November 13, 2021

All that aside, there are the graphical issues that the GTA Remaster Trilogy presents. These come in all sorts of flavours, from botched character models to rain effects being overlaid on non-water textures. It’s safe to say at this point that this is far from the Definitive Edition Rockstar claims to be. And making things worse were the taking down of the original versions of the games, as well as their mods.

WhatsApp Beta Expands Multi-Device Support To Include iPad and Android Tablets

August 22, 2021 By Keith

A great post about Penang.

WhatsApp’s multi-device support development is looking to be progressing quite well. According to WABetaInfo (via Twitter), the Facebook-owned private messaging platform is currently working on a beta update which will expand the list of compatible devices to include both iPad and Android-based tablets.

As most of us are aware prior to this, so far the only allowed non-phone devices that can be linked to a single WhatsApp account are personal computers such as desktops, laptops or Macs. Users can access their chats outside of their phone via the web client, desktop app or Facebook’s Portal platform by first scanning a QR code that is displayed on these devices.

WhatsApp Multi-Device Support Ipad Android Tablets
Screenshots via WABetaInfo.

While the linking process for iPad and Android tablets weren’t detailed by WABetaInfo, it is likely that the steps would be similar to a degree – especially via web and Portal. The publication also claims that WhatsApp will release a dedicated app for multi-device use on both tablet platforms, but did not mention an expected date of availability. It’s worth noting that even though iPad and Android tablets do support the main WhatsApp mobile app, a dedicated account (and number) on these devices are required in order to access all features.

The inclusion of tablet support is also reflected in the main app’s list of paired devices, where users can keep track of recent logins. As you may recall from our previous report, WhatsApp also appears to be enhancing user authentication for the multi-device feature by including biometric-based verification, among other things. Another worthwhile feature that it plans to introduce is the ability for users to seamlessly chat on all linked devices without requiring their phone to be connected to the internet.

• Is WhatsApp for iPad a web app? No, it’s a native app!
• Will WhatsApp for iPad work independently? Yes.
• Is WhatsApp for iPad already available? No.
• WhatsApp beta for iPad? If you have WhatsApp beta for iOS, you will automatically have the iPad version in the future. https://t.co/aQYBBtW7Sb

— WABetaInfo (@WABetaInfo) August 21, 2021

Unfortunately, there’s still no word on whether the platform is planning to allow users to link multiple phones to a single account. But seeing that tablet devices are soon to be added into the list, the possibility for the future inclusion of smartphones may not be far off.

Much like before, all of the existing and upcoming multi-device functionalities are only available in the beta version of WhatsApp. It is not known when the private messaging platform plans to have the feature available to the public.
