Razer Merchant Services Now Able To Deliver All Three DuitNow Payment Channels

December 31, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An informative post about Penang.

A subsidiary of Razer Fintech, the Razer Merchant Services (RMS) has recently announced that it is now able to help merchants adopt all three DuitNow payment channels. The company claimed that RMS is the first merchant acquirer in the industry that is able to do this which was made possible via its partnership with PayNet.

In case you are not familiar with the term, merchant acquirer is essentially the company that allows merchants to accept payments via credit or debit cards and digital wallets. In other words, a merchant acquirer provides the tools and solutions such as card terminals, payment gateways and API integration that enable merchants to process payments made by their customers.

As mentioned earlier, DuitNow (also known as the Real-time Retail Payments Platform) has three main payment channels including the DuitNow QR which is the national standard for QR payment. Its establishment has enabled interoperability between participating banks as well as e-wallets which means merchants just need to display one QR code in order to accept payments from multiple banks and e-wallets.

Other than that, there is also the DuitNow Online Banking/Wallets which is meant to facilitate payments for the e-commerce and m-commerce merchants. Not to forget, RMS also said that it can also deliver the support for the DuitNow QR cross-border payment which has just been enabled between Malaysia and Thailand earlier this year with Indonesia and Singapore to follow in the near future.

Meanwhile, the company is already aiming to have 3,000 physical locations and 1,000 online merchants to adopt the full DuitNow payment suite via its solutions in 2022. In many ways, it seems that RMS is working to position itself as the one-stop provider for merchants out there that are looking to quickly implement payment processing solutions for their business regardless of they have physical outlets, online stores, or a mix of both.

The cool Hyundai Staria lands in Indonesia, choice of 7- or 9-seater

August 21, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

A great article on Malaysia.

After making its ASEAN debut in Thailand in early July, Hyundai has introduced the large Staria window van in Indonesia.  The Hyundai Staria is designed to replace the Starex 11-seater window van that has been in service 2007.

No changes have been made to both markets which are in the right-hand drive layout. However, the Indonesia-market Hyundai Staria gets an exclusive rim design as well as two different trim and badging highlights.

The Brass Chrome package applies bronze effect over the Hyundai emblems, Staria emblem as well as the mesh pattern on the grille, the front spoiler, side mirrors and the elaborately patterned 18-inch rims, as seen in the examples provided.

For the Indonesian market, the colour palette for the new Staria has White joining the other three exterior colours- Abyss Black Pearl, Silver Metallic and Graphite Grey. The Dark Chrome package (image above) is paired only to this grey shade.

Hyundai and LG Energy to build Gigafactory in Indonesia. How big? More about the facility here.

Now for the interior, of which the new Hyundai Staria is offered in 7- or 9-seater configuration in Indonesia. Called “Premium Relaxation Seats”, the captain seats in the 7-seater are loaded with comfort features, such as ventilation, 8-way adjustment with additional reclining angle as well as ottoman leg support!

For the 9-seater, occupants can swivel the individual second-row seats to face the third row, turning the Staria into a mobile conference room or more engaging atmosphere.

Both interior configurations have standard premium features such as remote engine start, a fully automatic air-conditioning system for the front and back sections, leather upholstery (two colour choices), front passenger walk-in switch, manual window sunshades and LED ambient mood lighting. The 7-seater variant adds a Bose 12-speaker Premium Audio System.

Association of Southeast Asian Nations

Power to move the new Hyundai Staria is a modern CRDi turbodiesel unit displacing 2.2-litres. Outputs are 177 hp and 430 Nm of torque and all that power is sent to the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Independent multi-link rear suspension provides comfort to the occupants as well as better cornering stability.

Prefer the rear-wheel driven Hyundai Starex? Hyundai Sime Darby Malaysia is offering the Starex with a new Smart Lease programme. More about the ownership experience here!

Captain

Similar to the Thailand model, the Staria gets almost the full suite of Hyundai SmartSense ADAS features. We say almost because the only missing assist system is the Adaptive Cruise Control. Both seat configurations have standard fitment of the blind-spot monitoring (BSM), rear cross-traffic alert (RCTA), Safe Exit Assist and Surround View Monitor camera system.

LG

Hyundai Mobil Indonesia is positioning the 7-seater higher; thus it gets autonomous emergency braking, lane following assist, front vehicle departure alert and active assists in the BSM, RCTA and Safe Exit Assist.

The new Hyundai Staria in Indonesia is priced at IDR888 million (~RM260k) for the 9-seater variant and IDR1.020 billion (RM300k) for the 7-seater variant. A ballpark figure, the new Hyundai Staria is IDR300 million (~RM88k) dearer than the Starex H1 model.

For reference, the entry-level Toyota Alphard 2.5 X starts from IDR1.065 billion, while a Mercedes-Benz Vito Tourer starts from IDR1.027 billion.

Toyota Thailand stops production due to Covid-Delta outbreak

July 25, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An informative article about Penang.

Toyota Motor Thailand has stopped operations at three of its factories due to an outbreak of the Covid-19 Delta-variant.

The Nikkei Asia reported that operations have stopped since Wednesday (July 21st) and will last for at least seven days. The timing couldn’t be any better though, as operations were meant to take a short break from July 24th to 28th anyway in conjunction with national public holidays.

Thailand has a variety of vehicles that are aimed specifically at their taste and preferences

Nonetheless, Toyota Thailand will assess the situation and decide on the reopening on July 29th. The closure from Wednesday was due to a break in the supply chain, where a facility supplying wire harnesses has been forced to shut down due to an outbreak of the virus that is said to be from the stronger Delta variant.

The reopening will also be judged if the company finds a solution to the specific supply chain issue, thereby minimising its downtime to just three days.

Asia Pacific

This is the second time Toyota’s production in Thailand has been affected by the global pandemic, with the first beginning in March 2020.

UMW Toyota currently imports the Toyota Corolla Altis and Camry models from Thailand. The first batch of Toyota Corolla Cross is fully imported, before moving to local assembly by the end of this year.

With the semiconductor chip shortage starting to hit automakers, it is only a matter of time before the next wave of production is affected. Last year, Toyota Thailand only managed to produce 442,822 units, a significant drop from the total capacity of 760,000 units.

Camry

This year, the company is hoping to churn out 527,000 units, a 19% improvement compared to 2020. Close to half of the total production is exported to the Asia Pacific as well as other regions.

Closer to home, UMW Toyota also laments closure due to EMCO, hopes the situation improves soon.

The automotive industry in Thailand, dubbed Detroit of the East, is also gearing up to face the accelerated transition to electric vehicles. Last month, the state-owned energy company specialised in oil and gas has announced a collaboration with Foxconn to set up production of EV platforms in the Kingdom.

semiconductor

The government of Thailand also recently announced bold plans to accelerate the supply and adoption of EVs in the country. By the end of 2025, Thailand hopes to have 25% of new vehicles sold are zero local emissions, with the figure increasing to 50% by the end of this decade, up from 30% previously proposed.

The kingdom plans to only offer zero-emission new vehicles from 2035, the earliest country in the ASEAN region to wave goodbye to the internal combustion engine.

Next-gen Honda BR-V to start production in Indonesia this December, M’sia debut next year?

July 23, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

A really good post about Malaysia.

The next-generation Honda BR-V will be launched in Indonesia by the year-end, with production to begin in December this year at the Indonesian plant, according to a report by Indonesian automotive publication OtoDriver.

“Indonesia will be the home base for the successor to the BR-V”, the anonymous source told OtoDriver. The Honda BR-Vs built at the Indonesian factory will be exported to Thailand, the Philippines, Mexico, and South Africa.

driver

There will be additional assembly plants for the Honda BR-V in India and Malaysia, added the source. The former will begin at a later date, where it will also offer a diesel option for the seven-seater SUV, while Malaysia will be bringing in CKD vehicle packs from Indonesia for local assembly.

From that statement alone, it seems like the Malaysian launch for the next-gen Honda BR-V will also be imminent!

Check out the next-gen Honda BR-V in more detail in the image gallery here

Indonesia

While not confirmed, it’s now pretty much an open secret that the next-gen Honda BR-V will take the shape of the N7X concept that was unveiled earlier this year, thanks to a new patent filed by Honda in Indonesia.

According to the patent filing, it’s likely that we’ll continue to see the same 1.5-litre four-cylinder on the next-gen BR-V. The four-banger is good for 120 hp and 145 Nm of torque, and sends power to the front wheels via a CVT gearbox.

How does the Honda BR-V compare to its rivals? Check out our three-way comparison here

The patent filing also revealed that the upcoming Honda BR-V could come equipped the Honda Sensing advanced driver assistance suite, which would be a huge upgrade over the current-gen budget people-mover.

mexico

The current Honda BR-V here in Malaysia has been on sale since 2016, and even though it received a facelift last year, the design itself still looks quite dated compared to newer competitors, such as the Mitsubishi Xpander.

Pricing for the current model runs from RM86,726 to RM93,420.27 (both excluding sales tax), and we expect the new model to not stray too far from this bracket.

Khairy: Sinovac Vaccine To Be Removed From National Immunisation Rollout

July 15, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

A really good post about Penang.

Khairy Jamaluddin, the man overseeing Malaysia’s COVID-19 Immunisation Task Force, recently said that the Chinese Sinovac vaccine will no longer be used in the nation’s COVID-19 vaccination rollout. The Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister confirmed the news in a recent interview with The Vibes.

Khairy’s decision reportedly comes just after Adham Baba, the Health Minister, told the press that the remaining Sinovac doses would be reserved for those that still needed to complete their second dose. More importantly, Baba said that the decision to remove the Chinese vaccine from its national list was due to the country already having imported 44 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. In contrast, the national stockpile of Sinovac vaccine stands at 16 million doses.

Adham Baba

In light of this, Baba says that more of the Pfizer vaccine will soon see distribution across all states. On a related note, the state of Kelantan also recently announced that it was ditching the Sinovac vaccine in favour of Pfizer, starting 18 July. That said, private entities that are currently distributing Sinovac may continue to do so, at least until the national stock is used up.

Interestingly, neither minister have provided an explanation for the decision to drop Sinovac, though it is very likely due to the allegedly lower effectiveness rating of the China-made vaccine against the deadlier Delta variant of COVID-19.

AstraZeneca

Up north in neighbouring Thailand, the local government has already begun testing out heterologous vaccination, where citizens and frontline workers have been given Sinovac as their first shot. Will receive either AstraZeneca (AZ) or Pfizer as their second shot, while frontline workers who have already received two Sinovac doses will get either AZ or Pfizer as a booster. By mixing up vaccines, scientists are convinced that the act could provide better protection against COVID-19 and all of its known variants.

In any case, Khairy is expected to address the matter later today, so we’ll just need to wait to get a clearer picture.

Bermaz Auto to introduce full range of Peugeot SUVs, Kia EV6

July 15, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An interesting post about Penang Malaysia.

Bermaz Auto Berhad took over the Malaysian distributorships of Peugeot in December 2020, followed by Kia in April this year. Both marques were relinquished by Naza Group amid a soft automotive market in the country which was made worse by the coronavirus pandemic.

For the Peugeot brand, Berjaya Auto Alliance Sdn Bhd (BAASB) is planning an SUV offence with the introduction of the all-new 2008 with the facelifted 3008 and 5008 models by December. The larger, facelifted models will continue to be locally assembled in Gurun, Kedah.

The plant, which has Groupe PSA’s involvements, currently exports the Peugeot 3008 to Thailand and the Philippines. The smaller Peugeot 2008, which is also reported to be locally-assembled, made its (second generation) global debut in 2019 and is powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine with outputs of up to 155 hp.

In the report by Maybank Investment bank shared with investors, the range of new Kia models will be more diversified. As mentioned earlier, three models have already been planned for local assembly by the new joint-venture company called Kia Malaysia Sdn Bhd, including the Kia Seltos and Carnival, with the third model now revealed as the new Kia Sportage.

The new Kia Sportage was just unveiled for the South Korean market early this month, available with a petrol engine and a hybrid powertrain planned for introduction at a later date. As such, expect local assembly for this new model to only commence in 2022.

Bermaz Auto is also planning to introduce electrified and EV models from the range of automakers it manages. If the proposed EV policy by the government is favourable, expect the Kia EV6 and Mazda MX-30 to be launched in due course.

Bermaz Auto Berhad

The EV models will have subscription-based plans to address durability and residual values that are the biggest sticking points in EV ownership. Bermaz Auto has also identified private operators to be involved with on the charging infrastructure to ensure customers get the best out of their EVs.

Dinamikjaya Motors

The Kia EV6 is marketed as a premium product- the entry model with 228 hp and 500 km of range is priced from GBP40,895 (RM238,000), while the Mazda MX-30 is priced from GBP26,045, similar to a Nissan Leaf.

Watch the Kia EV6 GT take on a group of supercars in this drag race!

The Kia Niro Hybrid, slightly larger than a Proton X50, comes with a 130 hp full-hybrid powertrain and returns 4 litres/100 km of fuel consumption is also targeted for introduction by Dinamikjaya Motors, the new distributor of Kia vehicles in Malaysia. A Niro EV model with 204 hp and 450 km range is also available.

MAYBANK INVESTMENT BANK

Bermaz Auto, together with their respective joint-venture companies, remains committed to turning around the Peugeot and Kia brands by addressing the legacy issues.

Ford Thailand brings pick-up racing to the masses with the Ranger XL Street

July 6, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An informative post on Penang.

When you think of pick-up trucks, you’d usually associate it with the wilderness (or road bullies in recent years), and probably not the racetrack – well, that is unless you live in Thailand, where they actually race pick-up trucks on the circuit.

And it’s not just some niche racing series either; the pick-up races are such a big deal in Thailand that Ford’s local arm in the Land of Smiles is now bringing the racing-inspired styling to the streets, with the new Ranger XL Street Special Edition.

Android

Made to celebrate the carmaker’s 25th anniversary in Thailand, the Street Special Edition gets a new set of racing-inspired bodykit, which includes bumper extensions, side skirts, and a small ducktail-style spoiler on the tailgate.

If you’re more interested in off-road racing, then the Ranger Raptor might be more of your style. Check it out in detail here!

Completing the exterior modifications are the blacked-out door handles, side mirrors, 16-inch wheels, the Ranger Raptor-inspired grille with large ‘FORD’ script, and of course, no racing-inspired model is complete without racing stripes decals.

EBD

Just like a proper race car, the interior of the Ford Ranger XL Street is also relatively simple (i.e. standard). Everything is bone stock from the regular Ford Ranger XL in Thailand, including the black fabric upholstery on the manually-adjusted seats, analogue instrument cluster, and manual climate control.

proper race car

It does still have some creature comfort niceties though, such as the eight-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and USB charging ports. And in true race car fashion, it’s also only available with a manual transmission (see that, Toyota?).

Thailand

Powering the Ford Ranger XL Street Special Edition is the standard 2.2-litre Duratorq four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, which makes 160 hp and 385 Nm. There aren’t any advanced driver assistance thingymajigs on the racing-inspired truck, though ABS, EBD, and two airbags are standard-fit items.

All pick-up trucks should come with this amazing standard item offered in the Philippines!

The special-edition truck is priced at THB682,000 (~ RM 89k), which is THB13,000(~RM1.7k) more than the regular XL. Only 300 units will ever be made, and it’ll only be available with either a Lightning Blue or Absolute Black exterior colour.

New Honda Civic hatchback unveiled, Type R coming in 2022

June 24, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An interesting post about Penang Malaysia.

Honda has simultaneously unveiled the new Civic hatchback in the USA and Japan. Similar to the new generation sedan, the Civic hatchback features a more matured, less dramatic styling.

The new Honda Civic hatchback is 4,530 mm long (30 mm longer) and 1,415 mm tall (5 mm lower) with an identical 2,735-mm wheelbase and 1.8-metre width as the new sedan.

Civic
Not much resemblences to the Stinger from this angle onwards

Styling wise, the hatchback features a unique rear design with a more curvaceous LED lighting cluster and form a continuous look courtesy of the third brake lamp housed in between. The new composite tailgate is not only lighter but provides better rear headroom thanks to the relocated hinges. The boot is said to measure approximately 452 litres in space with marginal improvements over the previous model.

A cleaner looking rear bumper also houses the exhaust tips at the corners in the Civic Turbo hatchback, unlike the sedan.

Honda City

In front, the central grille features a sportier honeycomb mesh design with a deeper profile. Engine and powertrain choices remain the same as the sedan- a turbocharged 1.5-litre or naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines paired to a CVT or six-speed manual transmission. The CVT has been given additional attention of refinement for better response to the driver’s inputs and commands.

In Japan and Europe, the Civic hatchback is also offered with the e:Hev dual-motor hybrid system, however, with undisclosed technical information.

The turbocharged 1.5-litre engine develops 180 hp and 240 Nm, while the 2.0-litre engine pushes out 158 hp and 187 Nm. Sport, Eco and normal drive modes are now accessed via a more user-friendly toggle switch.

Indonesia

Honda also promises that the new Civic hatchback will drive better and more comfortable for the occupants. The combination of a 19% stiffer bodyshell, suspension and steering upgrades result in a smoother, more linear and more precise feel in turns while a reduction in friction and improved bushings are key to reducing harsh road shocks.

Gone is the Jazz and in comes the City hatchback as the replacement

Stinger

Inside, the Civic hatchback also uses the same simplistic dashboard with a standing central display and metal honeycomb mesh trim that conceals the air-conditioning vents. In the models bound for Japan, the black interior with red highlights have similar vibes to the Honda City RS e:Hev.

Like the new Honda Civic sedan, the hatchback gets an updated Honda Sensing driver assistance system. The single-camera LaneWatch has been replaced with a conventional blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert system.

A new ‘False Start’ suppression function works in both directions, applying brakes if an obstacle is detected, thereby reducing the chance of collision during parking.

Similar to the fan-favourite FK8 Honda Civic Type R, the new Civic hatchback will form the basis of the high-performance front-wheel drive hot-hatch that still employs a slick-shifting manual transmission and is slated for production from 2022.

Although developed for Europe as their main market, the previous generation Honda Civic hatchback was also assembled in Thailand and sold there as well as Indonesia. Apart from the new Honda City sedan, the pace of new model introduction in Malaysia seems to require more time and resources than our neighbours so don’t expect the Civic hatchback in Malaysia so soon.
