The Volkswagen ID.4 honoured as the World Car of the Year 2021

April 21, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

A really good post on Penang.

Volkswagen’s global fully electric car, the ID.4, has just been awarded the grand prize of World Car of the Year (WCOTY) 2021. This is the 17th edition of the global automotive awards ceremony.

This year’s winner was chosen from an initial entry list of 24 vehicles from all over the world, then a shortlist of three finalists was announced at the end of March.

Association of Southeast Asian Nations

The Volkswagen ID.4 received a total of 798 points, beating another popular electric car, the Honda e, which amassed 742 points. The Toyota Yaris scored just 10 points lower. Finalists were assessed and given marks in traditional categories (e.g. space, value and performance) as well as more intangible items such as emotional appeal and market significance.

Other models in the pool of finalists include the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe and Mercedes-Benz GLA.

Audi Q8

Judged by a panel of 93 international automotive journalists from 28 countries, the WCOTY finalists were selected via a secret ballot, based on their individual evaluation of each eligible vehicle conducted throughout the year as part of their own professional work. The votes were tabulated by KPMG.

There are also categories for more targeted segment such as luxury, performance and design. The winners and finalists are listed as below:

World Luxury Car

Malaysia
  1. Mercedes-Benz S-Class (853)
  2. Polestar 2 (815)
  3. Land Rover Defender (774)

World Performance Car

Porsche
  1. Porsche 911 Turbo (822)
  2. Audi RS Q8 (792)
  3. Toyota GR Yaris (773)

Unsurprisingly, the Toyota GR Yaris scored big in Value and scored better than the Audi Q8 in the categories of Market Significance and Emotional Appeal.

Curiously, only vehicles in this category are available for sale in Malaysia today (out of the 15 top finalists), with the now-sold-out Toyota GR Yaris asking RM286,896 a unit while the just-introduced Porsche 911 Turbo has a price list that starts from RM2.2 million.

World Urban Car

Toyota Yaris
  1. Honda e (754)
  2. Toyota Yaris (737)
  3. Honda Jazz/Fit (719)

Both the Toyota Yaris and Honda Jazz/Fit are variants for developed nations i.e. Japan and Europe, where safety and emission regulations are more stringent than the products found in ASEAN.

World Car Design of the Year

  1. Land Rover Defender (299)
  2. Honda e (239)
  3. Mazda MX-30 (197)

With more and more fully electric cars being launched every quarter, the organising committee has also introduced a category just for local zero-emission vehicles. The Honda e has been quite popular with the global jurors. Last year, it was awarded as the overall winner of the German Car of the Year 2021.

The jurors in the Women’s World Car of the Year awarded the Honda e as the Best EV while its beautiful design was given the award of ‘Best of the best’ by Red Dot.

Last year’s WCOTY was the Kia Telluride, with the Porsche Taycan taking top honours in the Performance and Luxury categories.

Sime Darby Motors officially launches Motors City with six flagship 3S centres, costing RM570 million

April 12, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

A really good article about Malaysia.

For those driving along the old Subang Airport road (or Jalan Lapangan Terbang Subang) in Selangor, you would have noticed the massive building complex housing various automotive brands in Ara Damansara. Sime Darby Motors today officially launched this automotive facility housing six flagship 3S centres, touted as the largest in the Southeast Asia region.

Built at a cost of approximately RM570 million on a land size spanning 8.6 acres, the eight-level Sime Darby Motors City (SDMC) automotive complex has an overall built-up area of 1.3 million square feet and house eight automotive brands plus Sime Darby Motor’s own pre-owned car division.

Bavaria

The brands that are operating in SDMC are BMW, MINI, Porsche, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, Ford and Hyundai. BMW’s Motorrad motorcycles also have a dedicated 3S facility within the Auto Bavaria section of the automotive complex.

In total, the floor space can display more than 180 vehicles, almost 200 service bays and close to 700 parking bays for customers. The complex is also a Green Building Index (GBI) certified facility with sustainability in mind and incorporates technologies to cultivate a paperless organisational culture.

car trading platform

SDMC is Malaysia’s first automotive facility that employs the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, featuring systems such as vehicle tracking management (from customer check-in to servicing), automated number plate recognition and smartphone application.

The implementation of IoT is key to ensure the delivery of world-class services to customers with greater efficiencies and a seamless experience.

With the electric vehicle (EV) revolution already started, SDMC has its workforce trained to handle EVs plus designating special areas for EV charging, storing and repairs, which are currently available at BMW and MINI’s Auto Bavaria, Auto Hyundai, Porsche’s Auto Performance and Volvo’s Swedish Auto.

Outside of the Porsche centre, a 175kW DC fast charging station has also been installed, delivering a near-full charge to the fully electric Porsche Taycan in 36 minutes.

Apart from new vehicles, trading-in of existing vehicles can also be done with myTukar, Malaysia’s fastest growing online used car trading platform. SDMC will be myTukar’s showcase centre.

Jalan PJU

To commemorate the launch, Sime Darby Motors City will be organising a “Grand Launch Weekend” with attractive deals across the six flagship stores between 16 and 18 April 2021 (this weekend). Customers are encouraged to take advantage of the many attractive deals specifically for this weekend and capitalise on the government’s vehicle sales tax exemption which will expire on June 30th 2021.

Sime Darby Motors City is located at No.6, Jalan PJU 1A/7, Ara Damansara, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Porsche did 300 km/h non-stop in the new 911 GT3 for 5,000 km, only stopping for fuel

April 9, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

A great article about Penang Malaysia.

Two months ago, Porsche revealed the new 911 GT3 to the world but only now have they revealed the juicy secrets from behind that iconic shell.

Underneath that massive rear wing, which in itself is an engineering marvel, is a 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated engine with 510 hp and 470 Nm, and a 9,000 rpm redline!

What they did not reveal at launch was that the engine, which is based on the 911 GT3 R race car, had undergone more than 22,000 hours of testing, running full throttle for most of the time.

Porsche also revealed that the engine held up and performed flawlessly as it was driven consistently at 300 km/h for 5,000 km continuously on an oval track in Italy. The car only stopped for fuel.

As for the swan-neck rear wing, its angle can be adjusted to four different positions, like the front diffuser. According to Porsche, it allows the new 911 GT3 to generate 50% more downforce than the previous model at 200 km/h.

In the most extreme setting, the rear wing can generate more than 150% extra downforce compared to its predecessor.

Car classifications

“We developed the aerodynamics of the new 911 GT3 in around 700 simulations. We spent more than 160 hours fine-tuning the car in the wind tunnel,” explains Porsche aerodynamics engineer, Mathias Roll.

Porsche invests more into Rimac Automobili, increasing its share to 24 per cent

March 8, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

A great article about Malaysia.

Rimac Automobili, a relatively niche supplier of high-tech components for electromobility sees more funding and investment from Porsche.

Porsche first invested in the Croatian technology firm back in 2018 with a 10% minority stake. That increased to 15% a year later and now with an investment of 70 million Euro, Porsche will hold 24 per cent of the shares without exercising a controlling influence.

CEO

“Mate Rimac and his team are important partners, especially when it comes to supporting us in the development of components. Rimac is well on its way to becoming a Tier 1 supplier for Porsche and other manufacturers in the high-tech segment. Porsche has already placed its first orders with Rimac for the development of highly innovative series components,” said Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board and Member of the Executive Board for Finance and IT at Porsche, Lutz Meschke.

Porsche has for many years been stepping up investment in young companies with potential. It currently has stakes in more than 20 start-ups and eight venture capital funds. “Our investment in Rimac has turned out to be absolutely right,” Meschke says.

Executive Board for Finance

“Porsche has been a big supporter of our company since 2018, and it has always been a privilege to have one of the world’s most iconic sports car brands be a part of Rimac,” says CEO and founder, Mate Rimac.

high-tech components

“We’re proud to work together on exciting new electrified products. With many car manufacturers across the world being Rimac customers, it is important, both for Rimac and Porsche, that we remain an entirely independent business,” adds Rimac. The company has also been engaged for projects by automakers such as Hyundai, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin.

iconic sports car brands

Rimac Automobili is also launching their own EV vehicle which is designed to have close to 2,000 hp and 2,300 Nm of torque. The four-motor two-tonne electric hypercar is targeted hit the century sprint benchmark in under two seconds, onwards to a top speed of 412 km/h.

Limited to just 150 examples, the Rimac C_Two EV hypercar with a range of 550 kilometres will begin production this year at its new production facility located in Veliko Trgovišće, Croatia.
