Penang Remains The Only Green Zone In Malaysia As Of 29th July But The Work Isn’t Done

July 31, 2020 By Keith Leave a Comment

This blog post was recently published by penangfoodie.com. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Good day Penangites! Venturing into RMCO, everyone is now practising the new norm. Some of us are affected by the rising cases in Penang. As grey as things could be, we have something to brighten up your day. As of 29th July 2020, Penang remains the only green zone in Malaysia.

Penang Is The Only Green State In Malaysia As Of 29th July 2020

While this is definitely a silver lining and a piece of great news to Penangites, it doesn’t mean our work is done. As a friendly reminder of the new norm in Malaysia, several practices are mandatory. They are, wearing masks while you’re out (especially in crowded places), keeping a good sense of hygiene as well as practising social distancing.

food

To most of us, those are already habits that we’re putting into practise every time we leave home. According to MalaysiaKini’s Covid-19 website, Penang is the only state that remains as a green zone as of 29th July 2020. The statistics measure the active cases in the past 14 days and not the total active cases.

Allow us to reiterate the fact that the work isn’t done here and we shouldn’t relax despite this good news. However, it’ll be okay to give ourselves a pat on the back for this joyful news.

#StaySafe

As a united nation, we can all work and strive to make our respective states green, albeit with some hard work. So, together, let’s do our part and abide by the SOPs. Stay safe, Penangites!

Rumah Asap Kenyalang @ Lebuh Keng Kwee, Georgetown, Penang.

June 19, 2020 By Keith Leave a Comment

This blog post comes courtesy of kenhuntfood.com. Great reviews backed up with some great photos too.

Sarawakians can now have a taste of home at this newly opened restaurant… offering only Sarawakian delights. Manned by Sarawakians, the Rumah Asap Kenyalang has long presence at Butterworth but the island’s branch is fairly new; both places offer the same menu but the branch at Butterworth has a slightly more extensive menu compared to the island’s. Kolo Mee, Sarawak Laksa, 3-Layer Tea are some of the signature dishes here; nothing too fancy about the interior decor, just a casual place to get a quick fix. One of the few places in Penang for some decent, authentic Sarawak dishes.

Rumah Asap Kenyalang’s Kolo Mee registered a heavy porky notes, with a generous amount of minced Pork, Pork Lards and Char Siu served with the curly noodles. The seasoning was light but sufficient enough to give the noodle dish its savory flavor. Equally nice was the Mee Suah Ayam Merah, it did not possess the unpleasant fermented funky flavor but instead, it was well-seasoned and the Chicken was tender as well. The only setback was we took a while to photo-shoot the dish and the Mee Suah turned soggy. Another signature dish- Sarawak Laksa…. was okay, we thought the broth could be richer and creamier, it felt a little watered down and the spice-factor was weak… probably the Chili paste did not do the magic right. Big portion and good value nevertheless.

Old House Restaurant 老房子 @Bee Chin Heong, Kimberley Street, Penang

August 25, 2019 By Keith Leave a Comment

Another blog post freshly published by What2SeeOnline.com. I hope you enjoy!

Located in a corner house with its frontage on the busy Kimberley Street and side facing Ngah Aboo Lane, Old House Restaurant draws crowds for lunch and dinner alike with its simple “omakase” home-style Chinese cooking.

The air-conditioned restaurant is a part of the Bee Chin Heong group which specializes in Chinese prayer paraphernalia such as joss-sticks and fengshui items. Housed in an entire row of shop lots along Kimberley Street which is similarly color-themed, diners will be greeted by Chinese wooden furniture, paintings, and antiques inside the restaurant.

All the hassle of choice is completely lifted off your hands when dining at the Old House Restaurant – just take a seat and the kitchen promptly dishes out the food of the day for you!

This concept somehow maintains the element of surprise, as diners would just sit back and enjoy the home prepared meal almost “omakase”- like! The speedy course meal (available for lunch and dinner) is priced at an economical RM16 per person for the four courses which also includes a bowl of white rice plus a glass of Chinese tea.

For the several times that I’ve been there, the menu rotates frequently with the ratio of one stir-fried vegetable dish, one meat dish, one fish dish alongside a soup. The dishes are all served at the same time and the presentation is very home-style.

On a dinner visit, the dishes for two pax range from a roasted meat platter to fried fish, stir-fried greens with sambal, along with a fishball seaweed soup. I really enjoyed the crisp exterior of the fish and its taste intensified by the savory soya sauce.

On another lunch outing, our party of four enjoyed the combination of a roasted meat platter, fried fish, and stir-fried beansprouts with salted fish served alongside fishball seaweed soup.

Besides their RM16 set meals, this Old House Restaurant also has a fine repertoire of a la carte dishes. If you’re looking to splurge on luxurious delicacies such as scallops, braised abalone, lobster and so on, feel free to browse their a lacarte menu or speak to the friendly staff for arrangements.

A visit to the Old House Restaurant is sure to thrill anyone who pines for a quick and simple “omakase” home-prepared meal. The business hours are from 12pm to 3pm and 6pm to 10.30pm.

14th Coffee Located At Taman Seri Impian, Bukit Mertajam, Penang

May 2, 2019 By Keith Leave a Comment

Penang advice.

The next post was first published courtesy of Ken Hunts Food. I usually take pleasure in making time for 1 of their articles or blog posts because they are actually useful. I hope you find it helpful.

14th Coffee 拾肆室 has been taking social media channels by storm despite of its rather hidden location. The place is a residential-terrace turned cafe, with modern, chic and minimalist design. The place can be found behind AEON Mall at Alma; the exterior does not suggest much, especially to a cafe and the best part is, the entrance to the cafe is at the side, not the front… making it extra hard for first timers to come by. Being a vegetarian cafe, the place offers a simple menu featuring some mains (not the usual-boring vegetarian fare) including but not limited to, Shepherd’s Pie, Sandwiches, Noodles and Souffle Cheese Cake. Good quality of food despite wallet-friendly prices.

The Cold Sesame Noodles consisted of a mixture of julienned Cucumbers, Carrots, caramelized Vegetarian Ham and Enokitake Mushrooms… served over Sesame Salad dressing. The noodles were silky smooth rather than the al-dente type but the concoction was most refreshing and delicious. They did a nice twist to the Mushrooms by adding Sugar to caramelize them, introducing a tacky-crisp texture and sleek sweetness to the dish.
If you like your Cheese Cakes creamy and rich, you must try 14th Coffee’s. The Cheese element was bold and the texture was satisfyingly creamy. It may be a little too heavy for one to finish entirely though. We washed it down with a serving of Matcha Au Lait Ice Cube… steamed frothy Milk poured over non-sweetened Matcha-infused Ice Cubes.
