Car Charging Facilities in G Hotel Kelawai by Auto Bavaria

Auto Bavaria launched their latest BMW i Charging Facility at G Hotel Kelawai, Penang.

G Hotel Kelawai now houses 2 BMW charging stations with the newest “i” brand identity and features that occupies a total built up space of 256 square feet at Basement 1 carpark of the hotel.

Launching of the charging facility on 27 August 2019 was officiated with a ribbon cutting ceremony by the General Manager of G Hotel, Michael Hanratty, Dealer Principal of Auto Bavaria, Wong Loke Win and Head of Sales of Auto Bavaria, Wong Kim Kooi.

In conjunction with the launch of the charging ports, Auto Bavaria also delivered its first BMW i3s in Malaysia. Wong Loke Win, the Dealer Principal of Auto Bavaria Penang said, “Today marks another
milestone for us at Auto Bavaria as the sole distributor of BMW i in Malaysia. We are extremely excited to deliver our first BMW i3s to Mr. Lim Chau Wei. Lim and his family members who are loyal supporters of BMW, have a futurist mindset in choosing to be early adopters of future mobility.”

According to Auto Bavaria “Sustainable mobility thrives when there is an effective combination of three factors: customer demand, facilities and innovative partnerships. Our collaboration with G Hotel Kelawai, is the third BMW i charging facility in the Northern region after St. Giles Hotel, Queensbay Mall and we are optimistic about the future of BMW i brand in Malaysia.” said Wong Kim Kooi, Head of Sales of Auto Bavaria.

As said by the General Manager of G Hotel, Micheal, “Eco-consciousness is quickly penetrating into the hospitality industry because of the increase demand for green energy and initiatives”.

Most Penangites have a soft spot for Thai food, the fact that we geographically near to The Land of Smiles puts our palates nearer to their delicacies. Krung Thep Thai Cuisine is one of the latest Thai food joints in heart of Georgetown. It’s easy to miss this quiet restaurant, probably overshadowed by the happening neighbors.

The air-conditioned restaurant has a simple, casual setting but the menu is far more interesting than its dining atmosphere. It has quite a number of classic Thai eats, from Rice dishes to Noodles, to Thai Salad, stir-fries and desserts. The wallet-watchers would be glad to know that it does not break the bank dining here, a plate of Thai Fried Rice is as low as Rm 8.90 here; making it a suitable stop to satiate your cravings for hot and spicy Thai food.

To whet up the appetite, we had Thai Chicken Feet Salad, a wonderful concoction of deboned Chicken Feet, raw Mango, Onions, Coriander, Spring Onions, Cherry Tomatoes… dressed in an appetizingly spicy dressing. The crunchy Chicken Feet with bold, addictive flavors would left you yearning for more. We were pleasantly surprised that the Claypot Glass Noodles was priced affordably at Rm 12.90. The portion was good enough for 1 and it comes with 3 Prawns.

The flavors were spot on and if you would prefer it to have a gentle spicy kick, top it off with some of their Sambal Belacan. Pad Kha Pao Seafood was our favorite pick that evening, the Basil-factor was bold and the dish was well-seasoned. The Long Beans were crunchy and the Seafood was cooked to perfection, we enjoyed the dish with the noodles. Pad Thai on the other hand, was less-impressive… might be a little overly greasy to our liking; also, it could be spicier and more flavorful.

The newest material freshly put out from Ken Hunts Food. Quite likely 1 of the best generators of material online.

Noodles are deeply rooted in our culinary consciousness, there is no one size fits all. There are a lot of varieties on offer and they can come in different size, color, shape, texture as well as flavor.

Typically, Pan Mee (a type of Hakka Noodles) is served in the shape of thin, round and smooth texture but Ah Ma Pan Mee, a newly opened Pan Mee specialist at 4th Street Club (Tye Sin Street) decides to do things differently. Using traditional recipe from Pahang, the noodle joint offers Pan Mee in its own style. While the soup bases and condiments are similar, the noodles stand out.

They come in irregularly fat-round shape with al-dente (slightly chewy and bouncy) texture. The menu is not big but the air-conditioned restaurant offers a comfortable dining space for hungry diners to have a quick fix; definitely a place where fans of Pan Mee should check out.

Curry Ah Ma Pan Mee (咖喱阿嫲刀麻切/ Rm 7.90)

Special Soy-marinated Pork with Rice (鼓油皇猪肉饭/ Rm 7.90)

Besides the signature soup Ah Ma Pan Mee, the dry Pan Mee is a popular choice. Noodles were cooked and dressed in dark Soy sauce, Scallion Oil and load off with condiments like Pork slices, minced Pork Meat, Anchovies and deep fried Scallions.

The noodles were delicious but some may find them a little overly-chewy. Personally, we love the texture and thought it went well with the home-made Chili paste. Spicy lovers may opt for the Curry Ah Ma Pan Mee, a dish that shares similar flavors as to Penang Curry Mee. The noodles were similar but the creamy broth possessed a sharp peppery heat which may not appeal to the chili-intolerant.

The latest blog post from Ken Hunts Food. In my opinion among the most helpful generators of information and facts you could find.

Village Kitchen boasts over a variety of classic Malaysian delights with a modern touch. The newly opened restaurant at D’ Piazza Mall has been drawing great crowd since its opening earlier ago.

The restaurant is Muslim-friendly and has quite a substantial choices to please the Malaysian in you; if you are as “sesat” as me, Village Kitchen offers a plenty of modern Malaysian-Fusion dishes. Notable highlights include Serunding Cheese Toast, Spicy Anchovies and Peanuts in Pita Bread, Spaghetti Beef Rendang, Lamb Shank Tom Yum etc. Though prices are mid-standard range, the lead time between order and serving can be infuriating; also, we did not think the food was all that great and worth the waiting time.

The Village Pita was a creative invention, the Bread was somewhat similar to Chinese’s Ham Chim Peng and stuffed with Malaysian’s favorite spicy Anchovies and Peanuts. The overall combination was good but we thought it was a little overly salty to our liking. Those who prefer bold flavors may find this appealing to them. Serunding Cheese Toast had a clever balance between sweet and savory notes but the edges were slightly burnt; the smokiness would offer a pleasant touch otherwise.

While Beef Rendang is ubiquitous, Beef Rendang served with Spaghetti is uncommon. Village Kitchen’s rendition was a little less-interesting. The Spaghetti was served as it was, with some sprinkles of Cheese Powder. The dish relied heavily on the Beef Rendang but the meat dish carried an indelible sweetness. It was probably sweeter than my Ais Kacang. Also, the texture was somewhat odd and not the type of Beef Rendang that I was expecting.

There will always be a time every now and again where one might crave for something soupy and spicy, and that’s when one is due to enjoy a steamboat meal. Several have mushroomed across the state of Penang over the last couple of years. One that particularly stands out is Chong Qing Lau Huo Guo Steamboat 重庆老火锅, located on the bustling Kelawai Road.

The restaurant with Oriental interior design and ambience is not only a popular hot-pot spot but, it is also a dim sum place in the morning. Do take note that there is another branch over at Icon City at Bukit Mertajam, with its operating hours differing slightly from this outlet.

Diners will be spoilt for choice with its varieties of soup, from the authentic Chongqing spicy mala to herbal mushroom chicken soup, healthy golden soup, tomato soup, Thai Tomyam soup, pork soup and the pickled radish old duck soup.

On our hot pot night outing, we had a bubbling hot pot soup with two choices of soup – Chongqing spicy mala soup and the non-spicy pickled radish old duck soup. The latter is overflowing with poultry goodness from the long hours of brewing with bones and trimmings.

As we stirred the ladle on the spicy soup, we noticed a lot of ingredients was used in the preparation. Each spoonful of the soup offers numbing sensation from the plentiful Sichuan peppercorn (huajiao).

The restaurant serves up a lengthy menu of ingredients. For the meat lovers there are paper-thin slices of pork, beef and lamb besides homemade pork balls, beef balls and mutton balls. It takes merely a few seconds to cook the thin slices of meat, which is uniquely served on a rack resembling laundry towels across a field.

Minced pork paste and pig blood cubes are also popular items and are thoroughly enjoyable. The gelatinous texture of the pig blood cubes turns out mouthwatering and made us yearn for more.

Broth is topped up from time to time. We rounded off the hot pot with leafy green vegetables, shiitake mushrooms, black fungus and some noodles.

Many steamboat restaurants have taken on the concept of providing varieties of dipping sauce and condiments to go with the meal. Here, there are many choices and diners just need to top up RM2 per person which is inclusive of fresh fruits.

To keep it simple, it is great to have some freshly cut spring onions which brightened up the meal and also garlic which enhances with its sharp, pungent taste.

We leave with a huge belly to boot. Food portions are generous with its higher price, albeit with a beautiful setting and comfortable seating.

Coupled with late business hours from 5pm until 5am, Chong Qing Lau Huo Guo Steamboat at Kelawai Road, Penang 重庆老火锅 makes for an ideal hot pot place for many to enjoy a warm bubbling meal.

Beard Brother’s BBQ: So Tender You Can Eat with a Spoon

Monstrous barbecue smokers with a giant bearded pit master at its helm? Seems like a scene right out of a country western shindig. Believe it or not, you can see this daily at Tropicana Avenue, Petaling Jaya! Here, Nazri Jameson, Afifter and Saif Ismail, the bearded trio behind Beard Brother’s BBQ, have taken a passion for Texan barbecues, added their own Malaysian touch and got to smoking.

A 14 Hour Labour of Love

It really is quite impressive watching the big black 1.2-ton smoker do its magic turning out meat so tender you could literally cut it with a spoon. It’s a carnivore’s dream come true.

So, how does the meat become so soft? After a good rub down of spices, the meat is put into the smoker for 14 hours. Yes. 14 hours! Talk about a labour of love. When do these guys get any rest?!

Make Mash Like a Bearded Brother

Their menu includes beef brisket, beef ribs, lamb and chicken. Interestingly, they make their own sausages from scratch. Sides include coleslaw, mashed potatoes and cornbread. We were curious about how they season their meat but that was a top secret recipe locked in the mind of the pit master himself, Nazri. We did manage to get him to tell us his recipe for their yummy skin-on mashed potatoes.

To make his mash, he uses Holland potatoes because they have a thin skin which, he says, is key to making a good skin-on mash. Submerge the potatoes in salted water and boil until it’s cooked (this should take about 15 minutes). Once it’s soft enough, take the potatoes out, add butter and get smashing! For every 5kg of potatoes you add 1 stick of salted butter.

The key to his recipe is the addition of brisket fat for that added oomph of flavour. If you’re at home, you can experiment with adding juices from your whatever meat is roasting in your oven. Finally season with salt and pepper.

Support the Obsession

Nazri is very proud of how far they have come, as he should be. The Beard Brother’s BBQ’s newly set up residence at Tropicana Avenue is a long way from their humble beginnings as a barbeque delivery service. How do you even go from a delivery service to having your very own restaurant featuring a 1.2-ton smoker?

“I was obsessed,” said Nazri.

There was a lot of trial and error in the early years. Nazri, who runs the bbq smoker, recalls what he terms as “dark times” and going through at least 120kg of meat trying to get the recipe just right. Perseverance and family support through it all were key.

It’s not an easy business to go into but his advice to anyone wanting to give it a shot is, “Don’t skimp on quality.” He feels strongly about never compromising on the quality of the ingredients.

“Everything is top notch quality. If you downplay quality, customers can taste it,” says Nazri.

Taste of Malaysian Wood

While quality is key, another tidbit about Beard Brother’s BBQ is that they have incorporated Malaysian elements into a very western menu. Naturally, well known ingredients like lemongrass make an appearance, but more interestingly, it’s the type of wood they use to smoke the meat. Unlike other barbecue smokehouses that use imported wood such as Hickory or Mesquite, Beard Brother’s BBQ uses wood native to Malaysia.

There are two types of wood they use including Rubberwood and Mangrove wood. Rubberwood lends a smokey bitterness to the meat while Mangrove wood infuses the meat with the saltiness of the sea. We learn something new every day.

Meet an Ambassador

It is not that often that you get to meet an Ambassador. It is not that often you get to meet someone that inspires you to do more for the underprivileged in this world. It is not that often that you meet someone on a mission to improve the plight of the voiceless in our society. It is even less rare when you meet one person that encompasses all of the above virtues……Her name is May Bouquet-Brown.

She looks stunningly Eurasian, she sounds antipodean and yet she was born in Malaysia; raised in Australia, she has now returned to offer her services to assist in improving the Healthcare Services available in the public Hospitals as well as to the children of Penang.

May was born in Penang on the busy side steps of a cafe’ shopfront in Kimberley Street, Penang home and work place of the Chow Family, Mrs Chow helped May’s Mother deliver her into this world before May’s young Mother died giving birth to the baby girl with eurasian eyes and golden hair. A passing lady who witnessed the birth along with the police took May into the Penang General Hospital.

After several days under observation the same lady who had witnessed May’s birth took her from the hospital to be cared for at Rumah Kanak-Kanak, Taman Bakit, Jebatan Kebajikan in Kepala Batas, which is over the bridge towards Butterworth. Jebatan Kebajikan is the Malaysian Government welfare centre. Thus, May became a ward of state, “one of the lucky ones!” as May would say.

She was the 95^th child to enter through the security gates at Kepala Batas in that year.

It was to be another 4 years before May’s fate was to change in a positive and profound way, the day she was adopted by Dr. Ng and his wife. The family eventually moved and Dr. Ng went on to practice as a GP in Sydney, Australia.

May always had big dreams of being a performer or a humanitarian. She attended schooling at the MacDonald College of Performing Arts in which she excelled in ballet and art. It has always been instilled in May to assist humanity since at a very early age; she would often follow her Father to emergency house calls. Progressively, she became aware of the importance and honour of her Father’s line of duty, saving people’s lives and attending to those in need.

They say that Nature will be outdone by Nurture and her new family has gone on to prove that helping out through medicine definitely runs in the family with a GP father and her brother who went onto become a well-respected cardiologist in Sydney himself.

May returned to Malaysia to find her “4 lost years” and whilst visiting family in Penang reacquainted herself with her roots. She was dismayed with the disparity of healthcare between her adopted country Australia and her place of birth, Penang.

May started her eventful journey by first volunteering to improve the customer relations healthcare services in Penang Adventist Hospital/ Penang General Hospital and whilst being in Penang during her first month May decided to spread her wings to widen her quest in extending her resources and interest to children who are least privileged.

She decided to take time to see what could be done to give a voice to the people that were going through a system that she had so luckily escaped. What if? Must have been going through her mind when confronted with the hardships of a public healthcare system that did not offer what she had grown accustomed nestled in the bosom of her family in the affluent society of Sydney.

It has to be said that the public healthcare system in Malaysia may not compare with western societies but it is leaps and bounds ahead of many of its fellow Asian counterparts.

What May is hoping to achieve is to raise the standards to an even higher level and to let people know what they can receive. What most people point out when they write about May is that she works with orphans and children in need. This is true she does but she also is working to improve the public healthcare systems resources and better meet the people’s healthcare needs.

She does not get paid for her good works but has taken a voluntary role with the General Hospital of Penang as Customer Services Ambassador. She could be considered the human face of medicine, merging the necessary care with a regard for the feelings of the patient.

May also hopes to promote the good work that volunteers do and would like to shine a spot-light onto these unsung heroes who work tirelessly without monetary gain and often without recognition of their good deeds.

May is not easily daunted and it is her persistence and resilience in the face of adversity that makes her stand out from the crowd.

All of May’s efforts are driven to help these less fortunate amongst us and she is hoping that the more affluent amongst Penang’s society will join her by contributing time, food or goods to assist in her mission of aiding the less fortunate in Malaysian society.

We wish to thank May for bringing the spotlight onto these issues, for encouraging support by raising awareness and developing support mechanisms to the healthcare system and orphans and children in need of care.
