An interesting post on Malaysia.

Beloved for its kochabi tok tok mee, the newly opened Ichi Tong 一桐 at Prangin Lane in George Town, Penang has a menu that features the best of the noodle.

Within its huge antique wooden doors, this noodle restaurant which is a few minutes walk from La Vie en Rose Pâtisserie envelopes into a cozy atmosphere with a relaxed dining setting.

The restaurant specializes in the Chinese tok tok mee (commonly known as wanton mee) and the menu introduces a variety of series of the tok tok mee in curry, Sichuan, Chaozhou, and tomato soup. All the noodle dishes are elevated to a higher end, prepared with either fresh prawn wantan, roast pork, fish fillet, tiger grouper fish, and seafood.

Tok Tok Mee is the ultimate comfort food and in Ichi Tong, the noodles are served in dark black sauce and garnished with your ingredients of choice. An order is combined with a bowl of wanton in clear soup.

For the kochabi tok tok noodle series, the owner has come out with delicious ingredients to introduce the noodle, such as prawn wantan, roast pork, seafood, and Taiwanese chicken chop. If you want to go upscale, try the Taiwanese-style beef or the spicy beef.

When you want some spiciness, go for the curry mee series. A bowl of Seafood Curry Tok Tok Mee is loaded with a flavorsome curry broth along with a huge prawn, clams, and a plate of deep-fried fish fillet. Chilli paste plays an important role in curry mee and the combination of it adds great flavor and aroma to the dish. The spiciness of the chili paste will make you sweat, so add gradually.

This dish priced at RM18.80 is especially popular at Ichi Tong. It is one of my favorites and is recommended to try it.

We also got the chance to sample the tomato soup series which is a milky-looking broth with a mixture of aromatic ginger and tomato flavors. The dish that came to follow was the Mee Sua in Tomato Milk Soup with a choice of deep-fried fish fillet. The garnishing of celery leaves accentuates the noodles nicely.

For the more adventurous looking for something hot and spicy, do check out the Sichuan spicy series. Prepared with Sichuan peppercorns and chili pepper, the soup comes with three levels of spiciness – spicy, very spicy, and super spicy (spicy is plenty hot for an average person).

We had the Sichuan Spicy with Fresh Prawn Wantan. The soup with spiciness and lip-numbing effect wins hands down for us.

In addition to the noodle dishes, the menu also includes some snacks such as dumplings, wanton, fish skin, lok bak, and shrimp roll. A personal favorite is the Vinegar Oil Fresh Dumpling, with a filling of minced meat and prawn.

For desserts, Ichi Tong has its own handmade dou hua. Don’t leave without trying the whopping smooth dou hua served with brown sugar. This is just one of the three versions. The other two are the red bean sago dou hua, and the glutinous ball dou hua.

You will have a wonderful choice of noodles and more at Ichi Tong and being an air-conditioned restaurant offering quality ingredients, the prices are a bit higher.

Daily business hours are from 11am till 10pm.
