Cafe In George Town Delivers New Soft Shell Tacos With Firecracker Prawn & More

July 30, 2021 By Keith

An interesting post on Penang Malaysia.

It has been three months since dine-in is allowed in Malaysia. It is always important to support the locals, especially during tough times. While ordering from food delivery platforms is the easiest way to get food delivered to your doorstep, it is a good idea to balance it out by ordering it directly from cafes. Here are some soft shell tacos worth ordering directly from Hold Up!

Hold Up! Delivers New & Improved Soft Shell Tacos

Located along Jalan Kuala Kangsar, Hold Up, also known as Out of Nowhere, is no stranger to locals and tourists. Tucked in a heritage building, it has a concept of a cafe (white and bright) in the front, and a cocktail bar (dark and classy) located at the back. Interestingly, you will need to go through a faux orange refrigerator to enter Out of Nowhere. (Basically, it is Narnia, but in George Town).

When we are allowed to dine-in again, it is a must-visit! In the meantime, Hold Up! has been collaborating with Roku (an eatery specialising in Japanese and Mexican cuisine located in Bukit Mertajam) to introduce some sensational soft shell tacos. Previously, it was offering hard shell tacos. After receiving some feedback, these new and improved soft shell tacos are a must-try!

Firecracker Prawn, Fish Ebiko, & Peking Char Siew Tacos

After experimenting in the kitchen, Hold Up! and Roku will be relaunching their taco series. This time around, it will be using soft shell tacos to ensure that the quality remains top-notch when it is delivered. One set of tacos come in three distinctive flavours. Munch on Firecracker Prawn, Fish Ebiko, and Peking Char Siew Tacos. Check out what is inside these umami tacos!

  • Firecracker Prawn Taco – Slaw, prawn, tomato salsa, guacamole, lemon, chilli flakes.
  • Fish Ebiko Taco – Slaw, fish, ebiko, teriyaki sauce, mayo, coriander.
  • Peking Char Siew Taco – Char siew, inari, spring onion, cucumber, inari, white sesame, pea sprout.

Initially, Hold Up! x Roku was only available on the weekends. Now, it is available throughout the week except for (Taco) Tuesdays. One set is nicely priced at RM29. Apart from these soft (bomb)shell tacos, Hold Up! has a range of snacks such as fried chicken burger, fries, and everything else that is crunchy and nice. All items are available for takeaways and delivery throughout this period.

Earth Is Probably The Only Planet With Tacos, Enjoy It.

To order, you can drop them a direct message via @holdupetc (Instagram), or drop a call to 019 7276748.

Address: 75, Jalan Kuala Kangsar, George Town, 10100 George Town, Pulau Pinang

Operating Hours: Daily except for Tuesdays.

This Platform Supports Penang Hawkers By Uploading Their Photos And MCO Operating Info

July 11, 2021 By Keith

A great post on Penang Malaysia.

Penang has just transitioned into Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan. While more outdoor exercises are permitted, the dine-in ban remains in place. And we all know that our hawker aunties and uncles are struggling to stay afloat. This is where Dabao Penang comes in.

Dabao Penang Helps Local Hawkers Weather The Storm

Dabao is a community initiative that allows Penangites to share photos and relevant information of hawkers. Then, they will be shared on Dabao’s Instagram and Facebook platforms. This is especially helpful for hawkers who are not tech-savvy as they will receive social media exposure for their local businesses.

Dabao Penang Hawkers

Here are the easy steps you can help out local hawkers

  1. Snap a photo of the hawker’s stall front view, menu/price list, the hawker/owner and include information like contact number, general location, operating hours. Oh and don’t forget a photo of the food before you start digging in!
  2. Submit information on (1) on the link here and you’re done!

In fact, there’s more to this initiative. The next time you’re scratching your head thinking where to dabao, check out the DabaoMap to find hawkers close to your area. Because in trying times like these, we can always support local.

Dabao Penang Hawkers

Do you have a favourite hawker stall in Penang? Perhaps you’re thinking of helping them weather through this storm then it’s time to upload photos and information on Dabao Penang!

#SupportLocal Hawkers

It may not be much but every little bit helps. Remember to always #SupportLocal! Bye!

Perak-Based Non-Profit Organisation Struggles To Continue Providing Meals For Their Children During The Third Wave Lockdown

July 9, 2021 By Keith

An informative article on Penang.

We are blessed with many kind souls putting in the effort to relieve the burden during this trying time. The same goes for this non-profit organisation. For the past 13 years and hopefully in the future as well, Hope Mission Welfare Society aims to serve underprivileged children as “every child deserves a better tomorrow”.

Home Mission Welfare Society Started With Just 3 Girls

Hope Mission Welfare Society
Photo: Hope Mission Welfare Society (Facebook)

Based in Teluk Intan (Perak), the Home Mission Welfare Society was officially established in 2009. It all started when Pr Johnathan Mutha and his wife, Sasikala helped three children back in 2008. That was when the ‘Hope Mission Home’ programme kicked off. They rented a house, provide shelter and basic necessities for the children. Moreover, their kindly act has been extended to over 450 children in their 12 years journey.

Challenges During Covid-19 Pandemic

Facebook
Photo: Hope Mission Welfare Society (Facebook)

“We do not only want to provide protection from the pains of an empty stomach for our children, but also avoiding negative long-term consequences of food insecurity on their health and well-being,” says the management.

As you may already know, food insecurity and financial hardship are worsening in this current pandemic. There are households that do not have enough food for every family member – empty pantry and no money in the budget. Hence, this issue has become a major concern for the people at Home Mission Welfare Society as they are struggling to continue giving meals to the children under their care.

Let’s Not Make The Children Wonder When Their Next Meal Is Coming

Share Food
Photo: Hope Mission Welfare Society (Facebook)

Now, how can you help them? Through the ‘ShareFood’ Campaign, you can help provide 24,304 meals from June until December for the children during this challenging time. Every RM10 can cover a child’s four (4) meals in a day. There are other donation options available too. You can click here to find out more. Let’s not make the children wonder when their next meal is coming.

Also, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their kind efforts in helping the needy. May you be blessed with an abundance of good things in life! Stay safe, everyone.

Hawker in Bukit Mertajam Burdened With Debts Flies White Flag, Now Gets A Fresh Start

July 1, 2021 By Keith

An informative post on Penang.

We’ve been hearing a lot of heart-wrenching stories ever since the White Flag Campaign took off a couple of days ago. This uncle in Bukit Mertajam was burdened with debts and struggling to even live by alone. In despair, he decided to fly a White Flag in front of his gate as his last resort. Help came and uncle was given a new chapter of life.

Hawker in Bukit Mertajam Hangs a White Flag As He Struggles To Even Afford His Daily Meals:

Facebook
Photo: Steven Sim Chee Keong (Facebook)

#Kempenbenderaputih, or White Flag Campaign was a movement launched by Malaysians a few days ago on social media. It is to encourage those who are struggling during the pandemic to seek asistance without the need of begging. If you see a white flag hanging at one’s precinct, that means the person is seeking help, be it mentally or financially.

An uncle in Bukit Mertajam that goes by the name Ah Soon, is a hawker struggling to make ends meet. He was in despair and was tired of begging for help everywhere when no one responded. The white flag that he flew was his last resort. He has even thought of ending his own life at the Penang Bridge.

food
Photo: Steven Sim Chee Keong (Facebook)

The on and off MCO and indefinite lockdown took a huge toll on Ah Soon. Not only is he not allowed to operate his business, even if he does, it would only cost more, with little to no customers. Soon, he was covered in debt from all sorts of rental and bills, to the point where he had to sell off his electrical appliances to live by.

It’s not like Ah Soon didn’t try to stand back on his two feet. He did, multiple times, yet each time is a failure, and he’s tired.

“I only want to make a simple living. I can work, but how can I continue pushing myself in this kind of situation?” he said.

A Fresh Start With The White Flag Campaign:

food court
Photo: Steven Sim Chee Keong (Facebook)

Local authority Steven Sim Chee Keong noticed the white flag on Ah Soon’s premise and contacted him. After a long conversation trying to understand his well-being, Steven decided to provide aid.

With his help, Ah Soon was able to clear off his debt and even managed to set up his hawker stall at a new food court. His stall is also rent-free until end of this year, and he is really grateful. With the help provided, he is given a fresh start ahead, and he could continue to provide for himself with his own two hands.

New Private Community Group
Photo: Steven Sim Chee Keong (Facebook)

Foodies, if you’re around the neighbourhood, try to support Ah Soon’s hawker stall. He is located in Zhou Food Court next to Caltex (Sentosa, Jalan Kulim, Bukit Mertajam), in front of the famous coconut water stall. In this trying time, let us all join hands in supporting local businesses.

Also, do take the White Flag Campaign seriously. If you happen to spot a white flag, try to provide support within your means. Or, contact the local authorities for help so that they’ll notice them. On the contrary, if you’re struggling, don’t be afraid to fly the white flag and seek asistance. Do help to spread awareness on this campaign, that’s all, stay safe, and buh bye!

This Supermarket Sets Up A Food Bank To Aid Those Who Are In Need In Penang

June 29, 2021 By Keith

An interesting post on Malaysia.

Facebook

There’s a lot things we can do to help each other out. Setting up food banks is one of the best way to aid the needy during these trying times. It may seem simple, however it is not easy to organize. Which is why we should also do our part and spread the word.

Give What You Can At Sam’s Groceria Straits Quay

Walking towards this supermarket, you will notice a few tables that have been set up to collect and donate food supplies. Visitors are invited to join the cause and contribute whatever they can so that we can take care of our community together. You can donate anything from groceries to daily necessities and remember that no gesture is too small.

Additionally, next to the food bank is a free food counter that was set by Ram’s Deli that is also committing to the cause. Said in their Facebook post, they have already donated 464 meals ever since they started distributing them. “It’s a simple meal but we promise u will not be hungry.”

Spread The Word

Kudos to both Sam’s Groceria and Ram’s Deli for this heartwarming and selfless gesture. Remember that we are in this together! If you are ever short on food or know someone who needs a helping hand,  don’t be shy and drop by. We need to survive this as a community!

As we are all aware, our education system has changed dramatically. It is an undeniable fact that some of our students are having a hard time keeping up with online classes now. Having the proper gadget and strong internet connection is important for students to properly join classes. Sadly not everyone is able to afford it. Which is why we are super pumped with this idea.

Table, chairs, wifi, and even tablets are prepared to make sure that they can study comfortably. The best part is, it is also equipped with a high-speed 300 Mbps internet connection!

To ensure that the children are well protected from the virus, an open-aired hall was selected. They even arranged the tables with a few meters of distance. Now, this is a great way to help unfortunate students get back on track with school. Maybe we can have more study halls for our kids in the future eh?
