800 hp Mercedes-AMG GT hybrid teased – to be unveiled at IAA Munich

It’s just under two weeks to go until the commencement of one of Europe’s largest international motor show events, the IAA which will be held in Munich. While many automakers are showcasing clean mobility and technologies to significantly lower carbon emissions, Mercedes-AMG has teased its latest model ahead of the motor show.

Unofficially called the Mercedes-AMG GT 73e, this four-door coupe utilises hybrid technology from its all-conquering Formula 1 campaign to boost powertrain output to over 800 hp, 160 hp more than the outgoing GT 63 S. The concept vehicle was first revealed, albeit with a new Mercedes-AMG camouflage livery, in March, and the vehicle in the teaser image seems to have maintained the front fascia of the ‘concept’ car.

AUDI

Mercedes-AMG will also use this model to launch their new AMG E-Performance badge, which uses high (and new technology) electrifications for increased driving performance and pleasure. At a technical presentation in March, the 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine is paired with a new motorised rear-axle and an AMG High Performance battery pack.

The complex rear Electric Drive Unit (EDU) integrates an electrically shifting two-speed transmission, motor and an electronic rear axle differential lock into a relatively compact casing with the AMG battery positioned above. It has plug-in capabilities as well, with a 3.7 kW on-board charger.

Both BMW M and Audi RS have no answer to this new hybrid technology, with Porsche Panamera being its closest rival. In the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, the total system output is 700 hp from an electrified 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine.

BMW X5

A hypercar with just a tiny 1.6-litre engine, expected to have over 1,000 hp and very active aerodynamic for competition car-like cornering performance. More about the Project One here.

The outgoing Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4Matic+ had 639 hp and 900 Nm of torque without any electric assistance. It also holds the lap record for the fastest executive car at the Nurburgring.

Apart from the unveiling of this 800 hp Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door, Mercedes-Benz is also reported to be presenting the fully electric AMG EQS plus the new Mercedes-Benz EQE, the latest member to the fully electric EQ brand.

C-Class

Mercedes-AMG is also expected to release the C 63 variant of new C-Class range with a heavily electrified 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with a combined system output of approx 600 hp, surpassing current V8 engines.

The Brabus Rocket 900 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S is aptly named as such. 900 hp! It has a great wide bodykit too! More about the rocket here!

The IAA Munich Mobility is scheduled to be held from September 7th to 12th with a larger focus on mobility and connected technologies that meet the new lifestyle requirements rather than static concept car displays. Visitors will also get to test drive or sit in new zero emission vehicles such as the hydrogen-powered electric BMW X5.

Smart’s new electric SUV concept teased, more details in September

The Smart brand from Daimler Group is set to rebuild its product portfolio, starting with a fully-electric compact SUV. The brand that focuses on ultra-compact cars for use in narrow European streets currently offers the smart EQ fortwo (hardtop and cabrio) as well as a smart EQ forfour, all in fully-electric flavour.

On its Instagram page, the Smart company said, “The shape of things to come – here’s a never-before-seen glimpse of the next chapter of the Smart brand.”

In our earlier article, Smart’s vice president of global sales Daniel Lescow, has not been shy to talk about the latest developments within his company. He said “It may come as a surprise to some: Smart will enter the market with a fully electric SUV – spacious yet compact. This will be the first vehicle of the joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, due out in 2022, built in China.”

Lescow also says in his LinkedIn post that the upcoming Smart vehicle will be built on Geely’s new SEA electric car architecture.

Mercedes-Benz will be responsible for the design of the new Smart electric SUV model, while Geely will be the main contributor in terms of development and production of the vehicle.

Reports from China suggest that the still-unnamed Smart SUV model will be equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor, generating a maximum power of 272 hp, alongside a lithium-ion battery pack with a capacity of less than 70 kWh and a range of more than 500 km, based on the Chinese NEDC test cycle.

Mercedes-Benz’ latest EQA 350 AWD compact meanwhile has an output of 292 hp, a battery pack with 66.5 kWh usable energy content and a range of 432 km under WLTP test cycle.

This is a much larger scale than the current Smart forfour (image above), with the vehicle measuring just 3.5 metres in length and fitted with a 82 hp/160 Nm electric motor, a 17.2 kWh battery pack and a range of 126 km. 

Smart is intending to unveil the new electric SUV in September at the IAA Mobility in Munich.

Selamat Datang to Hans de Visser, BMW Group Malaysia’s New MD and CEO

BMW Group AG has appointed Hans de Visser as the New Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BMW Group Malaysia, effective May 1st 2021.

De Visser, amassing over 29 years with BMW Group, first began his career having started as a manager in Marketing Communications at BMW Motorrad, Munich. Before his current role in BMW Russia as the Marketing Director, de Visser served in various Sales and Marketing roles across several markets globally, including the Middle East, Central Eastern Europe, Spain as well as the Group’s Munich headquarters.

De Visser will take on the role and responsibilities from current MD and CEO Harald Hoelzl, who in turn, will take on a new role at BMW Group in Vienna, Austria.

“Hans’ broad experience in various roles in marketing and sales, as well as his international background will be extremely valuable in his new position,” said Senior Vice-President Region Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa, Hendrik von Kuenheim.

In his time in Malaysia, Hoelzl led BMW Group Malaysia back to the number one position with over 52% market share, the highest for the premium automaker in the world. BMW Group Malaysia also recorded its highest achievements of over 90% positive satisfaction responses in its Net Promoter Scoring (NPS) for its customer satisfaction- the second-highest achievement in the BMW Group’s network.

Hoelzl also successfully led BMW Group Malaysia to become the number one electrified mobility provider as well as local assembler in the premium segment.

BMW i4 Gran Coupe unveiled, 530 hp and 0-100 km/h in 4 seconds

Straight after releasing details of the BMW iX SUV, the premium brand from Munich showed off the latest product from their electrified ‘i’ brand, the i4. The world premiere took place as the curtain-raiser for the BMW Group Annual Conference.

The BMW i4 is a fully electric four-door Gran Coupé with a power output of up to 390kW / 530 hp, 590-kilometre range and can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in around four seconds. Its refined balance of BMW typical sportiness, comfort and sustainable performance are unique in its segment.

A BMW M Performance model is also in the works as well as a Sport package as seen in the iX SUV announced earlier. “With its sporty looks, best in class driving dynamics and zero local emissions, the BMW i4 is a true BMW. It makes the heart of the BMW brand now beat fully electric,” said Pieter Nota, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Customer, Brands and Sales.

More information on the new i4 will be released in the coming weeks. BMW is expecting to deliver the new i4 to customers as soon as Autumn 2021, three months earlier than planned.
