Video: Lexus LC 500 vs Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe drag race on KLIA runway

October 25, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

A really good article on Penang Malaysia.

As they say, all good things must come to an end; our once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to drag race cool cars on the KLIA runway unfortunately have to stop after six episodes. But that doesn’t mean we won’t go out without a bang, as our final instalment for the AutoBuzz Drag Series 2021 certainly had a lot of those (and pops and crackles).

Introducing our two contenders for the final race of the series: on one side, we have the shiny Lexus LC500 Convertible, and on the other, the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe.

Now, we know you might be a little confused on why we pitted these two cars against each other – because on the surface, they’re two very different – or completely opposite – beasts. Firstly, and perhaps most obviously, the Lexus is a 2+2 convertible sports car, and the GLC 43 is, well, an SUV “coupe”.

And the differences aren’t just skin deep, too. On one hand we have a five-litre, naturally-aspirated V8 monster of an engine, and on the other, a more modern three-litre twin-turbocharged V6. The Lexus is rear-wheel drive only, while the AMG furnishes its grunt to all four wheels.

So, why are we doing this again? Well, for fun, obviously. You don’t expect us to have a whole runway to ourselves, without going full pedal to the metal in a car (or two) with a proper big boy engine, do you? But perhaps more relevant to our dear viewers like yourself, these two cars actually have a pretty comparable power-to-weight ratio when you crunch the numbers.

Which will emerge victorious? The old guard or the new kid on the block? Well, you’ll have to watch to find out.

Video: Honda Civic Type R vs Mercedes-AMG A35 vs MINI JCW Clubman drag race…on KLIA’s runway!

August 12, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An informative article on Malaysia.

We really went all-in on this one. It’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen because it’s never been done before. For the first time ever, KLIA opened its runway to us for some drag racing!

Given the opportunity, we shot more than just this video and they’ll be aired in the coming weeks so be sure to stay tuned.

As for this first and most special video, not only did we pit three exciting hot hatchbacks against each other but also got a real driver, former Malaysian Formula 1 driver, Alex Yoong, for a special appearance with the little boys.

Given his higher competency behind the wheel, we decided to leave him with the only car with a (6-speed) manual gearbox, the FK8 Honda Civic Type R.

As for the boys, Dominic went for the MINI JCW Clubman with an 8-speed automatic, leaving GC Mah with the quick-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch transmission in the Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC. You see where this is going right?

In terms of output, they couldn’t be more similar although the JCW Clubman stands out with just a little more torque. All three are powered by 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engines with just over 300 hp but unlike the AMG A 35 and the Civic Type R (400 Nm), the Clubman puts out 450 Nm.

How does that translate on the tarmac? Can Alex’s driving talent make up for the slower-shifting manual gearbox, while the other two merely press switches in the Mercedes-AMG and MINI? Only one way to find out!
