34 Bishop @ Bishop Street, Georgetown, Penang.

July 24, 2019 By Keith Leave a Comment

Penang Malaysia tips.

The following submission was indeed produced courtesy of Ken Hunts Food. They frequently provide videos of the best quality so are no doubt one of my must-watch writers. You are going to enjoy.

Replacing the lot previously occupied by Simply Wang Thai is 34 Bishop, a newly opened cafe right next to Two Frenchies on Bishop Street. The name surely does not ring a bell (except the location) but in actual fact, it is a cafe offering Western menu… as well as some local delights. Step in the place and you will find a huge aquarium in the middle of the cafe, with a few eye-catching polka dot Stingrays. You will then notice they are all over the place… on the menu and mural paints on the wall but it has no direct relationship with what the place offers (except that there is only one Stingray dish on the menu). Options are pretty safe here with good consistency and reasonable prices; but sometimes, the serving time takes a little longer than other places.

We were there on one of the early Chinese New Year days and the serving speed was very slow. It took them a little less than an hour to serve the mains and another half an hour for the dessert. We were quite disappointed with their serving speed and hope that it was because of Chinese New Year and nothing else.

Both Pasta dishes did not disappoint… with Miso Wafu Pasta stands out more. The Spaghetti was al-dentely cooked and served with rich and creamy Japanese-styled Goma sauce. The Miso flavor was not strong but the Sesame flavor was bold. The sauce felt a little salty at the beginning but it gets better when the Spaghetti was well-mixed together. Lamb Stew with Garlic Toasts was the star dish of the day, the meat was tender and the flavor-combo was beautifully done. The accompanying Garlic Toasts were not shabby either, the texture was fluffy and soft, almost like buttered Brioche. The seasonings were however, on the heavier side. We ended the meal with their Bananas Foster French Toast… ordinary ersatz Toast served on a bed of Caramel sauce. It did not seem convincing at first but the Caramel sauce was delicious. It was not saccharine sweet but just good enough at comfortable level, we were a little let down with the choice of Toast though, Brioche might work better in this case.

14th Coffee Located At Taman Seri Impian, Bukit Mertajam, Penang

May 2, 2019 By Keith Leave a Comment

Penang advice.

The next post was first published courtesy of Ken Hunts Food. I usually take pleasure in making time for 1 of their articles or blog posts because they are actually useful. I hope you find it helpful.

14th Coffee 拾肆室 has been taking social media channels by storm despite of its rather hidden location. The place is a residential-terrace turned cafe, with modern, chic and minimalist design. The place can be found behind AEON Mall at Alma; the exterior does not suggest much, especially to a cafe and the best part is, the entrance to the cafe is at the side, not the front… making it extra hard for first timers to come by. Being a vegetarian cafe, the place offers a simple menu featuring some mains (not the usual-boring vegetarian fare) including but not limited to, Shepherd’s Pie, Sandwiches, Noodles and Souffle Cheese Cake. Good quality of food despite wallet-friendly prices.

The Cold Sesame Noodles consisted of a mixture of julienned Cucumbers, Carrots, caramelized Vegetarian Ham and Enokitake Mushrooms… served over Sesame Salad dressing. The noodles were silky smooth rather than the al-dente type but the concoction was most refreshing and delicious. They did a nice twist to the Mushrooms by adding Sugar to caramelize them, introducing a tacky-crisp texture and sleek sweetness to the dish.
If you like your Cheese Cakes creamy and rich, you must try 14th Coffee’s. The Cheese element was bold and the texture was satisfyingly creamy. It may be a little too heavy for one to finish entirely though. We washed it down with a serving of Matcha Au Lait Ice Cube… steamed frothy Milk poured over non-sweetened Matcha-infused Ice Cubes.

Plaque Noire Dessert & Cocktail Bar At Kimberley Street, Georgetown, Penang

April 30, 2019 By Keith Leave a Comment

Penang tips.

The following piece of writing was in fact provided by Ken Hunts Food. They typically provide you with posts of the highest quality and are therefore one of my current must-watch blogs. I’m guessing you’ll enjoy.

The concept of combining two beloved things- desserts and cocktails has been creating excitements at the other parts of the world. Introducing this playful concept to Penang, Plaque Noire is the first of its kind. The proprietor was trained in Taiwan and France before settling down in Penang. Painted in shades of black, the place exudes a mysterious sense; as you walk in, you will be greeted by the friendly servers. The place is not big… only with limited seating but visitors can opt to enjoy their booze at the bar counter or the tables at the end of the bar. Offering-wise, it has a small selection of sweets, which to be changed and updated on monthly-basis; a list of in-house Cocktails and classic blend. Prices however, are on the higher side but the quality is set to impress.

Start off with one of the best sellers- Apple… a beautifully combination of Cinnamon Sable and Red Wine Apple, complete with frozen Cheesecake and Vanilla Ice Cream. The Cinnamon-Apple combo needs no further introduction, the bomb was the Vanilla Ice Cream… deliciously creamy with bold-alluring Vanilla flavor. We were certainly impressed but not until we had Heavenly Chocolate…. a dish not to be missed by Chocolate lovers. The dessert plate gathered everything chocolaty… starting from the nutty Chocolate Brownie and creamy Mascarpone…. to Chocolate Ice Cream and Shards. The combination was multi-dimensional and it did not feel too “heavy” despite of the creamy-chocolaty elements around. Hands-down, one of the best Chocolate creations I’ve ever had.
While lifting up the spoons for the desserts, remember to take a sip on the mixed drinks. Goddess of Love was a little heavy on alcohol; while Summer Splash felt more refreshing with a fruity-touch. 1930’s was a little playful and unusual, as though we were drinking Yakult over Ice; the booziness was kept minimal.

Emily’s Steakhouse At Victoria Street, Georgetown, Penang

April 5, 2019 By Keith Leave a Comment

Penang Malaysia news bites.

Ken Hunts Food made available the following piece of writing. I always look forward to checking out 1 of their posts as they’re genuinely revealing. I hope you find it helpful.

Well-established and known to serve some of the best steaks in Derby (United Kingdom)… Penangite owner Emily is bringing a taste of Britain back to Malaysia, opening a branch here at Victoria Street, central Georgetown. Housed in Reunion Heritage House, Emily’s Steakhouse is an undisputed carnivore’s paradise, serving a char-grilled meat-focused menu along with some English classics like Fish and Chips and breakfast. Only available in the evenings, Emily’s Steakhouse has a casual setting with relaxed atmosphere, featuring the same interior decor as the main branch in Derby. This is a spot fits for any occasion or just a simple meal over some seriously good meat and Wines.
Many Thanks to Emily’s Steakhouse for hosting us.

All steaks at Emily’s are aged for at least 21 days before serving. As the kitchen needs some time to prepare for the charcoal stove, it is advisable to make your reservation earlier should you wish to come in earlier than 7 pm. The kitchen allows various doneness for their steaks, ranging from the uncommon “Blue” to “Well-Done”, though most would go for “Medium Rare” or “Rare” at max. All servings of steaks would come with their home-made sauce but we would recommend to start with Sea Salt… to taste the meat imbued with distinctive but alluring char-grilled aroma. Also note-worthy are the sides, especially the Chips. Using USA potatoes, the Fries are hand-cut and freshly cooked by the kitchen; a taste and texture unique to Emily’s Steakhouse. Hearty portion with seriously good meat. The unique but delightful burnt-smokiness is second to none in Penang. For sharing, do watch out for their freshly done Onion Rings, Salmon Parcels with English Garden Herb and Grilled Portobello Mushroom with Grilled Stilton Top.

Three Fifteen @ Jelutong, Penang

April 3, 2019 By Keith Leave a Comment

Penang Malaysia advice.

Latest article presented from Ken Hunts Food. Surely one of the most popular providers of free material available.

Three Fifteen 三点三 Meet is a place that you get to enjoy local breakfast in a city but surrounded by serene village setting. It’s hard to come by… imagine enjoying local Kaya Butter Toast while watching the chickens moving freely within the compound. The place can be found right opposite to Lam Wah Ee Hospital along Jalan Tan Sri Teh Ewe Lim; it is manned by one of the residents staying in the village houses, part of the compound is transformed into a breakfast place. Do not expect big menu though… merely simple Hainanese-styled Toasts, Polo Bun, Half Boiled Egg etc. It is one of the best places to visit aside from Seafood Noodle and Porridge that you can find at Gurney Drive, Penang.

Three Fifteen uses Charcoal to toast the bread, imparting a mellow, but distinctive smokiness to the Toast. Though nothing particularly amazing about the Kaya, the Toasts do make great addition to the Hainanese-styled breakfast and complete everything. Three Fifteen’s specialty is the Polo Bun… with additional toppings. We had ours with Cheese, greens and slivers of Turkey Ham. The outer layer of the Polo Bun carries a little sweetness so it is an interesting match with the savory toppings. Nothing particularly interesting here though.
