This New Cafe In Penang With An Outdoor Picnic Vibe Serves Awesome Miso Mushroom Spaghetti, Artisanal Desserts & More!

November 12, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An interesting post about Penang.

Foodies, we don’t know about you, but the hardest question to answer has got to be “what to eat?” Well keep the “I don’t know” because we have a seriously good spot to recommend! Last week, we paid a visit to Cafe Mangga, an in-house cafe of the famed Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. And boy, were we pleased by both their menu and their ambiance, you can say we walked out of the place with a happy tummy.

Cafe Mangga, An In-House Cafe Of Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion With A Casual, Laid Back Ambiance:

blue mansion

Like us, if this is your first time visiting Cafe Mangga, here’s a tip. Located along Lebuh Leith, they’re not nestled within the pristine Blue Mansion, but rather on your right before the main entrance to the mansion.

Cafe Mangga

The word ‘mangga’ literally translates to mango in Malay, and Cafe Mangga is tucked underneath an old mango tree on the grounds of George Town’s iconic heritage mansion. Step inside the cafe and you’ll be pleased by its laid back vibe, and the outdoors pretty much resembles a picnic ambiance.

Cafe Mangga At The Blue Mansion Address

We also found out that the space is a rather new addition to the bustling cafe scene in Penang. They’ve just opened their doors a couple months back, offering a list of lip-smacking brunch and tea time delights.

A Look Into Their Menu:

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion

George

We’ve ordered a couple of their bestselling dishes from the menu so here’s an in-depth review. We were immediately blown away by their Miso Mushroom Spaghetti! Field mushrooms and pasta are cooked to al dente in their white miso broth, topped with a generous amount of parmesan cheese, a sprinkle of spring onions and sesame seeds. It’s the best representation of East Meets West, packed with umami flavour in every bite.

LAZADA

We were told that Mangga’s Nasi Lemak is their signature dish. We first thought “how special can a plate of nasi lemak be?” Boy we were wrong. The essence lies within their Kapitan Curry Chicken, where mangoes were added as the key ingredient, delivering a semi-sweet, creamy and fragrant curry. It pairs so well with their coconut rice and other nasi lemak condiments, highly recommended!

MalaysiaYuzu Pandan Coconut

Other brunch offerings like their Avocado Toast with Runny Yolk Egg and Roast Beef Sandwich are equally delicious as well. Do note that the portion of their Roast Beef Sandwich is huge, so it’s best to order it as a sharing dish, unless you’re extremely hungry during the time of your visit.

Looking for something that speaks Summer? Try out their Berry Yoghurt Bowl. It’s nourishing and packs a punch of protein and fibre, like granola, strawberry coulis, banana, mixed berries and chia seeds. Perfect if you’re looking for something healthy and refreshing.

There’s Always Room For Desserts At Cafe Mangga:

Cafe Mangga

Leave some space in your belly because here comes dessert! Tea time lovers shouldn’t miss out Cafe Mangga signature Box of Treats. Featuring a selection of 8 types of petite cakes such as the Lychee Rose Choux au Craquelin, Pandan & Red Bean Swiss Roll, and Yuzu & Chocolate Truffles. Pair it with a cup of tea and enjoy the sweet treats under their huge mango tree outdoors.

Cafe Mangga At The Blue Mansion AddressCheong Fatt Tze Mansion

Their Yuzu Pandan Coconut Mousse Cake caught our eye immediately with its artisanal shape and aesthetically pleasing hues of green. Experience layers of flavours and textures as they melt in your mouth. The fragrant pandan coconut mousse added with Japan’s favourite citrus flavour will make your palate dance!

japan

Chocolate aficionados have to try their Valrhona Chocolate Bons Bons. They have a list of unique flavours to offer. Pair it with a cup of coffee and it’ll be the perfect way to end your experience at Cafe Mangga.

LAZADA

If you love cafe hopping and a good brunch or tea time, we highly recommend you foodies pay a visit to Cafe Mangga. Overall, our experience at the cafe was a blast, so it’s definitely Penang Foodie approved! Don’t forget to share this with your friends and plan a trip down to Cafe Mangga.

Southeast Asia’s First HINO Poncho Minibus Now Spotted in Penang

October 28, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An interesting article on Malaysia.

Foodies, there’s a new addition to our public transportation! HINO Poncho, a low-floor minibus with a 7-meter length is introduced in Malaysia to travel within the busy cities and narrow roads. The first trial run started at Kuala Lumpur back in 2019, and they’re finally here in Penang! Has anyone spotted this cute minibus?

HINO Poncho Minibus Now Seen On The Roads of Penang:

HINO MOTORS
Photo: HINO Malaysia (Website)

For those of you who didn’t know, HINO Poncho is the first low floor minibus with 7-meter length in the world. Hino Motors Sales (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Hino) and Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd (Rapid Bus) have joined hands and brought in the minibus to manoeuver around challenging routes and narrow roads. Here’s a fun fact. Malaysia is chosen as the first country in Southeast Asia to have the HINO Poncho in its public transportation fleet!

japan
Photo: HINO Malaysia (Website)

After successfully completing its first trial run in Kuala Lumpur for two months in 2019, HINO Poncho is finally making their trial debut in Penang. It will cater to route 11: Pengkalan Weld to Batu Lanchang, and route 201: Pengkalan Weld to Tingkat Paya, Terubong.

LAZADA
Photo: HINO Malaysia (Website)

Some might ask “why do we need a minibus?” First off, it’s much smaller compared to current busses which are 10 to 12 meter length, making it ideal to navigate through narrow city residential and low ridership areas. Not to mention its low floor design also made it easier for senior citizen, children, and wheelchair bound passengers to board.

In Japan, there are more than 2,000 units of HINO Poncho manoeuvring within the busy cities and narrow road. It is able to cater up to 31 including standing passengers. Question: Who’s excited to take a ride in one of these minibuses?

Honda Malaysia has resumed its operations and gearing up to regain momentum

September 6, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An informative article on Penang.

Honda Malaysia has officially resumed all its operations, both at the Melaka manufacturing plant and the operations office in Selangor as well as its dealerships nationwide and following the strict SOPs laid out by the respective government agencies.

“In our plans to regain the momentum and set a new benchmark in the market, Honda Malaysia has lined up new models that feature Honda’s Next Generation Advanced Technology to be launched in the coming months,” said Honda Malaysia, Managing Director and CEO, Ms Madoka Chujo.

Association of Southeast Asian Nations

Based on the timeline of Honda Motor Thailand, only two candidates are on the radar for us Malaysians- Honda City Hatchback (regular iVTEC and hybrid eHEV) and all-new Honda Civic Turbo. The all-new Honda HR-V/Vezel that was launched in Japan earlier this year has yet to be launched in ASEAN or North America, while Honda Malaysia just last week introduced the current generation 2021 Honda HR-V Hybrid.

As of August 2021, the Civic, Accord, HR-V and CR-V models all have continued their respective segment leadership position with 72%, 36%, 71% and 24% of the segment market share respectively.

Apart from the September Special Benefits promotion offering rebates and rewards of up to RM6,000 with a new purchase of selected Honda models, the Special Financing Program continues to be offered until the end of the year. This initiative allows customers to pay lower monthly instalments during the early stage of their new Honda ownership.

An online pre-booking platform has also been created to minimised contact and movement. It can be accessed from anywhere- the HondaTouch smartphone app or at Honda Malaysia’s official website. Scheduling service appointments via the HondaTouch smartphone app is also encouraged for a smoother and more efficient process.

The company also took the opportunity to thank the government and relevant authorities for the reopening of the manufacturing sector as well as automotive sales which Honda Malaysia undertook careful planning and stringent actions to ensure everyone’s safety, both internally and externally.

Honda HR-V

“We are pleased that 80% of Honda associates have been fully vaccinated as part of our effort to help curb the spread of COVID-19. This effort was also accelerated by the Public-Private Partnership COVID-19 Industry Immunisation Programme (PIKAS). Full vaccination is expected to be completed by October,” Ms Chujo continued.

During the mandatory shutdown of its operations, Honda Malaysia undertook several initiatives to help the communities in need, such as distributing necessities to six charity homes and contributing food and beverage packs to patients under quarantine.

New Tank 500 is China’s answer to the Toyota Land Cruiser

September 4, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An informative article on Penang.

For years Toyota’s Land Cruiser has been synonymous with all things four-wheel drive but China may have an answer to Japan’s golden boy which was just launched recently, in the form of the new Tank 500 revealed at the Chengdu Motor Show.

Under the hood of that muscular-looking front end is a petrol-powered 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 making 354 hp and 500 Nm, while a 9-speed ZF auto helps channel power to all four wheels.

Toyota Land Cruiser GR Sport launched in Japan, from RM297k! Read about it here!

AUDI

It’s unlikely to spring any surprises against the Land Cruiser 300 in terms of grunt, as the Toyota’s off-road crown jewel makes over 400 hp and over 650 Nm. Videos have surfaced showing how it accelerates like a hot hatch as well.

New Toyota Land Cruiser accelerates like a hot hatch! Check out the video here!

japan

Inside is where the Tank 500 really works its charm. There’s a hint of Volvo on the centre console, a hint of Mercedes-Benz on the steering wheel, and it’s hard not to think of Audi with the switches and the door handles/speaker cover. Even the dashboard somewhat mimics that of Rolls-Royce.

Rolls-Royce

Not much else is known in terms of its features, although based on the images available, it’s clear that the Tank 500 isn’t short of creature comforts and off-road abilities. It gets a locking differential with 4L mode, parking sensors, hill descend control and auto brakehold, to name a few.

Toyota Land Cruiser

Interestingly, the Tank 500 shares the same wheelbase length as the Land Cruiser at 2850 mm, offering three rows for seven passengers but elsewhere it’s just milimetres more petite.

With an 800 mm wading depth, it’s even better than the Range Rover Velar (at 650 mm) we tested and pick-ups (around 700 mm) we testedbefore.

Casio G-Shock DW-6900 Amuro Ray Limited Edition Launches In Japan

July 31, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An interesting article about Malaysia.

Casio had recently unveiled a new addition to its collection of Gundam-branded collaborative G-Shock watches. This time around, the new watch is a limited edition G-Shock DW-6900 featuring a colour scheme that is inspired by the series’ protagonist, Amuro Ray – specifically, the pilot suit that he donned in the film Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack.

The new G-Shock DW-6900 Amuro Ray Limited Edition comes in an all-white body, along with lemon yellow wordings and a black border surrounding its watchface. Visible on each strap is a disjointed red vertical stripe – a prominent design element featured on the protagonist’s pilot suit.

GUNDAM FAN CLUB G-SHOCK DW-6900 AMURO RAY limited edition watch japan casio

Located on top of its interface is a Londo Bell emblem (the same one featured on the character’s mecha, the RX-93 Nu Gundam) and tapping the chrome G-Shock button will reveal Amuro Ray’s insignia, which is only visible when the blue EL backlight is activated. Meanwhile, on the back of the watch is a stainless steel case with an alternate Londo Bell emblem design.

Unfortunately, this limited edition timepiece won’t be available for everyone as it is announced to be an exclusive for Gundam Fan Club premium members in Japan. According to the club’s official online store, the Casio G-Shock DW-6900 Amuro Ray Limited Edition is slated to be released in early October 2021, and is retailing at a tax-included price of JPY 22,000 (~RM 846) plus JPY 800 (~RM30) for shipping.

Besides Mobile Suit Gundam, Casio also released a variety of limited edition G-Shock watches that feature collaborations with other popular Japanese pop-culture franchises prior to this. These include hit anime and manga titles such as Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, Evangelion, and much more.

Mitsubishi set to launch all-new Outlander PHEV in Japan by end of 2021

July 30, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An interesting post on Malaysia.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) is to launch a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model of the all-new Outlander fully evolved with a new-generation PHEV system. It will be introduced in Japan at the end of 2021 and in the second half of 2022 in the US.

It may be sharing the same Common Modular Family (CMF) platform as the Nissan X-Trail but the PHEV powertrain should be Mitsubishi’s very own.

Find out more about the all-new Mitsubishi Outlander here!

Mitsubishi said the Outlander is set to come with higher output from the electric motors and higher battery capacity which should mean improved electric driving range too. The improved performance is expected to allow the Outlander PHEV to run purely on electric power for 70km while returning over 700 km in total mileage.

In the previous model, the lithium-ion battery capacity was only rated at 13.8 kWh, that figure could be pumped up to 20 kWh in the new model.

Since the launch of the Outlander PHEV, it has been sold in more than 60 countries around the world. MMC’s goal is to reduce CO2 emissions of its new cars by 40% by 2030 through leveraging EVs — with PHEVs as the centerpiece.

La TAO Cakes @ 1Place Many Cuisine, Hutton Lane, Georgetown, Penang.

July 24, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An informative post about Penang Malaysia.

Many might have not noticed the existence of 1Place Many Cuisine at Hutton Lane, previously the space was occupied as a Hotpot restaurant; like the name would have suggested, 1Place Many Cuisine is a space that comprises of a few proprietors offering different types of food. The menu is quite confusing- offering specialties from Korea, Japan and Western dishes. Put that aside, the highlight of this post is to share more about La TAO Cakes. The brand has been here for quite some time but was previously focusing on deliveries and cake supplies to cafes and restaurants. It takes up a space at 1Place Many Cuisine, with a small display fridge showcasing their fresh bakes of the day (their popular items are those alcohol-infused cakes). While the selection might be limited, the quality and delicacy make up for it. A very comfortable, spacious place to enjoy a delicate serving of alcohol-infused cake without putting a dent on the wallet.

We’ve tried 4 different types of cakes on 2 separate visits- both visits were of satisfactory. The Bailey’s and Whiskey Chocolate Cake left us with the deepest impression, the cake was heavily soaked with Rum and the alcohol flavor stood out. The sweetness was well-balanced and in fact, the alcohol bitterness prevailed. The Cream was less satisfactory here but it did not matter, it was the alcohol that mattered the most to us in this case. All 4 cakes were bold in alcohol flavors and if you are game for some alcohol-infused cakes, you should check this place out.

Someone In Japan Got Arrested For Selling Modded Breath Of The Wild Save Files

July 11, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

A great post about Penang Malaysia.

Back in February, we saw reports of a man getting arrested in Japan for selling hacked Pokemon for the franchise’s latest installments. More recently, someone just got caught doing something similar, but for another Nintendo IP. Said person was caught selling modded save files for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

The Broadcasting System of Niigata reports that a Tokyo resident was detained on 8 July for said offense. Originally, the modded save data was put up in an auction site in April for JPY3500 (~RM133). The listing was dubbed “the strongest software”, with boosted stats and rare items that would be tricky to obtain via normal gameplay.

Breath of the Wild modded save

Though the person was caught selling modded save files for Breath of the Wild, it wasn’t the only game he was modding saves for. The reports states that he also admitted to doing the same for other games, earning JPY10 million (~RM380000) since December 2019.

The man is charged under Japan’s Unfair Competition Prevention law, under which modding of save files isn’t illegal. But it immediately steps outside legal realms once the modded save files start going on sale. And as we saw previously, Nintendo is very quick to take action when it comes to its own IPs.
