New Toyota Veloz open for booking in Malaysia – to replace Toyota Avanza

June 26, 2022 By Keith

An informative article on Malaysia.

UMW Toyota Motor has announced that the all-new Toyota Veloz, which will be locally-assembled to replace the Toyota Avanza, is now available for booking. The Toyota Avanza was introduced locally in 2004 and UMW Toyota Motor has sold over 178,000 units.

The Veloz was launched in Indonesia in November 2021 followed by Thailand earlier this year.

The Toyota Veloz will be powered by a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated engine paired to a 7-speed CVT gearbox. As it is the 2NR-VE engine, it’s safe to assume that the 1.5-litre engine will produce 107 hp and 140 Nm to drive the front wheels.

Android

What has been revealed so far on the exterior is that the Toyota Veloz will feature LED headlamps with sequential turn indicators, with five different exterior colour options available – Blue Metallic with Black Roof, Silver Metallic with Black Roof, Red Metallic, Metallic Bluish Black, and White.

Also available in the Veloz are features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto through a 9-inch touchscreen, electronic parking brake with brake autohold, wireless charging and a 7-inch digital instrument cluster. Bootspace is rated at a generious 498 litres.

Toyota Safety Sense driver aids will also be available; offering features such as autonomous emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.

There was no mention on how many variants will be available although UMW Toyota listed an estimated price of RM95,000.

An informative article about Penang.

Sin Boon Kee Coffee Concept Store 新文记咖啡 located at Jelutong in Penang is way beyond coffee. The pork-free cafe which is a stone’s throw distance away from its coffee factory has drawn visitors for its local coffee and also food. With 70 plus years in the coffee industry, the store churns out thick and aromatic coffee using Robusta coffee beans from Indonesia. You can have the black or white coffee steaming hot or icy cold.

Hot and icy cold local coffee

Nanyang Butter Kaya Roti is Malaysia’s traditional breakfast of toast and kampung egg. The nicely toasted Bengali bread with a spread of butter and kaya jam comes with a half-boiled kampung egg. You would be inclined to have the egg enhanced with dash of pepper powder and light soy sauce.

The Curry Chicken on the other hand has a chicken drumstick in a rich curry prepared using milk instead of coconut milk. One can have it paired with either rice or noodles. If those are not your choices, try having it with steamed Bengali bread.

Be sure to order the aromatic Turmeric Fried Rice where a lot of attention is paid to using spices to enhance the flavor. The rice is super tasty and the menu offers a concoction of the turmeric fried rice with several dishes options – chicken chop, ayam goreng, or ikan rempah.

The ikan rempah is a seafood choice, with the fried hardtail mackerel stuffed with onions and sambal spices.

Razer Merchant Services Now Able To Deliver All Three DuitNow Payment Channels

December 31, 2021 By Keith

An informative post about Penang.

A subsidiary of Razer Fintech, the Razer Merchant Services (RMS) has recently announced that it is now able to help merchants adopt all three DuitNow payment channels. The company claimed that RMS is the first merchant acquirer in the industry that is able to do this which was made possible via its partnership with PayNet.

In case you are not familiar with the term, merchant acquirer is essentially the company that allows merchants to accept payments via credit or debit cards and digital wallets. In other words, a merchant acquirer provides the tools and solutions such as card terminals, payment gateways and API integration that enable merchants to process payments made by their customers.

As mentioned earlier, DuitNow (also known as the Real-time Retail Payments Platform) has three main payment channels including the DuitNow QR which is the national standard for QR payment. Its establishment has enabled interoperability between participating banks as well as e-wallets which means merchants just need to display one QR code in order to accept payments from multiple banks and e-wallets.

Other than that, there is also the DuitNow Online Banking/Wallets which is meant to facilitate payments for the e-commerce and m-commerce merchants. Not to forget, RMS also said that it can also deliver the support for the DuitNow QR cross-border payment which has just been enabled between Malaysia and Thailand earlier this year with Indonesia and Singapore to follow in the near future.

Meanwhile, the company is already aiming to have 3,000 physical locations and 1,000 online merchants to adopt the full DuitNow payment suite via its solutions in 2022. In many ways, it seems that RMS is working to position itself as the one-stop provider for merchants out there that are looking to quickly implement payment processing solutions for their business regardless of they have physical outlets, online stores, or a mix of both.

Honda Malaysia has resumed its operations and gearing up to regain momentum

September 6, 2021 By Keith

An informative article on Penang.

Honda Malaysia has officially resumed all its operations, both at the Melaka manufacturing plant and the operations office in Selangor as well as its dealerships nationwide and following the strict SOPs laid out by the respective government agencies.

“In our plans to regain the momentum and set a new benchmark in the market, Honda Malaysia has lined up new models that feature Honda’s Next Generation Advanced Technology to be launched in the coming months,” said Honda Malaysia, Managing Director and CEO, Ms Madoka Chujo.

Association of Southeast Asian Nations

Based on the timeline of Honda Motor Thailand, only two candidates are on the radar for us Malaysians- Honda City Hatchback (regular iVTEC and hybrid eHEV) and all-new Honda Civic Turbo. The all-new Honda HR-V/Vezel that was launched in Japan earlier this year has yet to be launched in ASEAN or North America, while Honda Malaysia just last week introduced the current generation 2021 Honda HR-V Hybrid.

As of August 2021, the Civic, Accord, HR-V and CR-V models all have continued their respective segment leadership position with 72%, 36%, 71% and 24% of the segment market share respectively.

Apart from the September Special Benefits promotion offering rebates and rewards of up to RM6,000 with a new purchase of selected Honda models, the Special Financing Program continues to be offered until the end of the year. This initiative allows customers to pay lower monthly instalments during the early stage of their new Honda ownership.

An online pre-booking platform has also been created to minimised contact and movement. It can be accessed from anywhere- the HondaTouch smartphone app or at Honda Malaysia’s official website. Scheduling service appointments via the HondaTouch smartphone app is also encouraged for a smoother and more efficient process.

The company also took the opportunity to thank the government and relevant authorities for the reopening of the manufacturing sector as well as automotive sales which Honda Malaysia undertook careful planning and stringent actions to ensure everyone’s safety, both internally and externally.

Honda HR-V

“We are pleased that 80% of Honda associates have been fully vaccinated as part of our effort to help curb the spread of COVID-19. This effort was also accelerated by the Public-Private Partnership COVID-19 Industry Immunisation Programme (PIKAS). Full vaccination is expected to be completed by October,” Ms Chujo continued.

During the mandatory shutdown of its operations, Honda Malaysia undertook several initiatives to help the communities in need, such as distributing necessities to six charity homes and contributing food and beverage packs to patients under quarantine.

The cool Hyundai Staria lands in Indonesia, choice of 7- or 9-seater

August 21, 2021 By Keith

A great article on Malaysia.

After making its ASEAN debut in Thailand in early July, Hyundai has introduced the large Staria window van in Indonesia.  The Hyundai Staria is designed to replace the Starex 11-seater window van that has been in service 2007.

No changes have been made to both markets which are in the right-hand drive layout. However, the Indonesia-market Hyundai Staria gets an exclusive rim design as well as two different trim and badging highlights.

The Brass Chrome package applies bronze effect over the Hyundai emblems, Staria emblem as well as the mesh pattern on the grille, the front spoiler, side mirrors and the elaborately patterned 18-inch rims, as seen in the examples provided.

For the Indonesian market, the colour palette for the new Staria has White joining the other three exterior colours- Abyss Black Pearl, Silver Metallic and Graphite Grey. The Dark Chrome package (image above) is paired only to this grey shade.

Hyundai and LG Energy to build Gigafactory in Indonesia. How big? More about the facility here.

Now for the interior, of which the new Hyundai Staria is offered in 7- or 9-seater configuration in Indonesia. Called “Premium Relaxation Seats”, the captain seats in the 7-seater are loaded with comfort features, such as ventilation, 8-way adjustment with additional reclining angle as well as ottoman leg support!

For the 9-seater, occupants can swivel the individual second-row seats to face the third row, turning the Staria into a mobile conference room or more engaging atmosphere.

Both interior configurations have standard premium features such as remote engine start, a fully automatic air-conditioning system for the front and back sections, leather upholstery (two colour choices), front passenger walk-in switch, manual window sunshades and LED ambient mood lighting. The 7-seater variant adds a Bose 12-speaker Premium Audio System.

Association of Southeast Asian Nations

Power to move the new Hyundai Staria is a modern CRDi turbodiesel unit displacing 2.2-litres. Outputs are 177 hp and 430 Nm of torque and all that power is sent to the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Independent multi-link rear suspension provides comfort to the occupants as well as better cornering stability.

Prefer the rear-wheel driven Hyundai Starex? Hyundai Sime Darby Malaysia is offering the Starex with a new Smart Lease programme. More about the ownership experience here!

Captain

Similar to the Thailand model, the Staria gets almost the full suite of Hyundai SmartSense ADAS features. We say almost because the only missing assist system is the Adaptive Cruise Control. Both seat configurations have standard fitment of the blind-spot monitoring (BSM), rear cross-traffic alert (RCTA), Safe Exit Assist and Surround View Monitor camera system.

LG

Hyundai Mobil Indonesia is positioning the 7-seater higher; thus it gets autonomous emergency braking, lane following assist, front vehicle departure alert and active assists in the BSM, RCTA and Safe Exit Assist.

The new Hyundai Staria in Indonesia is priced at IDR888 million (~RM260k) for the 9-seater variant and IDR1.020 billion (RM300k) for the 7-seater variant. A ballpark figure, the new Hyundai Staria is IDR300 million (~RM88k) dearer than the Starex H1 model.

For reference, the entry-level Toyota Alphard 2.5 X starts from IDR1.065 billion, while a Mercedes-Benz Vito Tourer starts from IDR1.027 billion.
