Frandy Beach Bar at Batu Ferringhi, Penang

July 1, 2020 By Keith Leave a Comment

Another blog post freshly published by What2SeeOnline.com. I hope you enjoy!

There are quite a number of cafes and bars along the beach in Batu Feringghi, Penang and they can make for a rather relaxing and enjoyable visit, akin to a mini getaway from the bustling urban areas.

Frandy Beach Bar is a hidden gem of a place, popular among tourists and locals. The drinking and dining place with the vantage point of the Lover’s Isle not only sets the tone for a nice sunset but also a convenient place to enjoy leisurely beach activities.

Just take a step out of the place and you will find yourself on the sandy beach. You can take a sunset picture of yourself while taking a quiet stroll and perhaps venture out on activities like horse ride and fishing.

At Frandy Beach Bar, its open layout creates a relaxing atmosphere. Bar seating is available both inside and outside on the beach. If the weather is optimally sunny, it is best to grab a table outside.

The casual ala carte menu has something for everyone, with plenty of friendly priced dishes from East and West.

A group of us opted for several Malaysian specialties and Western dishes such as chicken parmigiana, lamb chop, nachos, calamari rings, and salad. The Malaysian dishes are clusters of savory bites and mains with options including satay, pandan leaf chicken, spring roll, and fried rice.

As for beverages, the menu has a selection of beers, wine, cocktails, mocktails, and fresh juices. We complemented the meal with glasses of wine and fresh fruit juices. All in all, this place is an ideal getaway place for a lovely feast among friends complemented by the sea breeze and calming seaviews.

Chili Head Bar & Eatery @ Straits Quay, Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

June 15, 2020 By Keith Leave a Comment

This blog post comes courtesy of kenhuntfood.com. Great reviews backed up with some great photos too.

A new branch to Tree Monkey- a popular Thai restaurant found in Tropical Spice Garden, Batu Ferringhi; Chili Head Bar and Eatery is a place that embodies both Thai food and alcohol in one place. Right next to Healy Macs, the restaurant at Straits Quay offers the charming sea view in which diners can opt to dine-in at an air-conditioned environment or the outdoorsy al-fresco setting. Like most Thai restaurants, the menu consists of many familiar Thai delights but the price tags will set you back a bit (just so you can imagine the steepness- one small portion of Mango Salad may cost up to Rm 24 after tax). Great atmosphere, consistent quality but the price points are too steep to justify.

We started the meal with the Thai Mango Salad with crunchy raw Mangoes, Shallots, Tomatoes and toasted Cashew Nuts. The combination was amazing and the seasoning was spot on. a pity that the portion was way too small for the price. Moving on next was the Steamed Seabass with Lime and Chili, a classic Thai dish. Chili Head’s rendition was good… a perfect mix of Sour and Spiciness with a generous amount of Chilies and Garlic; the let down was again, the small portion (we expected bigger fish for that price). The star dish of the day was Sizzling Beef… tender, juicy and flavorful meat served on a sizzling hot pan… with Black Pepper sauce; not too Thai but definitely very delicious. We also had a bowl of Thai-styled Beef Noodles…. flavorful and herbaceous broth, tender meat but nothing out of the ordinary (not disappointed but just okay).

Old House Restaurant 老房子 @Bee Chin Heong, Kimberley Street, Penang

August 25, 2019 By Keith Leave a Comment

Another blog post freshly published by What2SeeOnline.com. I hope you enjoy!

Located in a corner house with its frontage on the busy Kimberley Street and side facing Ngah Aboo Lane, Old House Restaurant draws crowds for lunch and dinner alike with its simple “omakase” home-style Chinese cooking.

Old House Restaurant, CK Lam, Penang Food BLog, What2seeonline.com, Home Cooked, Kimberley Street, Penang,

The air-conditioned restaurant is a part of the Bee Chin Heong group which specializes in Chinese prayer paraphernalia such as joss-sticks and fengshui items. Housed in an entire row of shop lots along Kimberley Street which is similarly color-themed, diners will be greeted by Chinese wooden furniture, paintings, and antiques inside the restaurant.

All the hassle of choice is completely lifted off your hands when dining at the Old House Restaurant – just take a seat and the kitchen promptly dishes out the food of the day for you!

This concept somehow maintains the element of surprise, as diners would just sit back and enjoy the home prepared meal almost “omakase”- like! The speedy course meal (available for lunch and dinner) is priced at an economical RM16 per person for the four courses which also includes a bowl of white rice plus a glass of Chinese tea.

For the several times that I’ve been there, the menu rotates frequently with the ratio of one stir-fried vegetable dish, one meat dish, one fish dish alongside a soup. The dishes are all served at the same time and the presentation is very home-style.

A sample of the lunch meal for 2 pax

On a dinner visit, the dishes for two pax range from a roasted meat platter to fried fish, stir-fried greens with sambal, along with a fishball seaweed soup. I really enjoyed the crisp exterior of the fish and its taste intensified by the savory soya sauce.

Besides their RM16 set meals, this Old House Restaurant also has a fine repertoire of a la carte dishes. Mama Kim Sauna Mee Located At Tanjung Tokong, Penang

April 5, 2019 By Keith Leave a Comment

Penang Malaysia news.

One additional post by What2seeonline.com. In my opinion 1 of the most popular generators of information and facts you can find.

With the motto “Where Healthy is Yummy”, Mama Kim Sauna Mee is the place for everyone to experience a nutritious healthy meal in Penang. Located at the junction of Jalan Tanjung Tokong and Jalan Pantai Molek, the eatery offers a casual atmosphere and a menu that’s easy to order from.

The menu brings out Asian, Western and local dishes prepared with less salt, with no MSG, no white sugar and no white flour. Vegetables take center stage, and only brown rice is used!

One of Mama Kim’s highlights is the Sauna Mee 桑拿面, with choices of Fish Sauna Mee with fish soup, or Vegetarian Sauna Mee with vegetarian soup. Both offer options of brown rice, pumpkin noodles, and mushroom rice noodles.

The bowl of Sauna Mee arrived in a special heated hot stone bowl, with a balanced combination of more than five healthy colours of vegetables. Slow-cooked soup (refillable) is poured onto the noodles upon serving. The warming dish is best savored with their homemade chili sauce and fried garlic.

Fish Sauna Mee

The Fried Wild Mushroom Fried Rice 野菌炒饭 is a comfort fare, with a variety of mushrooms, carrot, and vegetables whipped up with a pleasing, smoky taste. The accompaniment is a simple salad, a combination of shredded purple and white cabbage, carrot, and corn. Chili padi in light soy sauce gives the dish a spicy kick.

Wild mushroom fried rice RM11.90

Porridge is a simple and light dish to warm the stomach. At Mama Kim, enjoy the comforting choices of creamy black and green porridge, brighten up with savory salty preserved accompaniments.

Black porridge (vege) RM7.50

Green porridge (vege) RM7.50

Mama Kim also puts together a kids menu with six choices. Small eaters can try choices of herbal chicken chop (RM9.90) and the tomato baked fish rice (RM10). The two dishes are essentially smaller versions from the full sized order.

The chicken chop is well executed especially when it comes to the accompanying sauce and creamy boiled potatoes.

Kids menu – herbal chicken chop RM9.90

Nourishing desserts are also made in-house and there’s a total of three. All are priced below seven ringgit and choices include black sesame, lo hon koa and the lotus crystal pear. The lotus crystal pear dessert is utterly delightful but the black sesame dessert offers only mild nuttiness.

   Lotus crystal pear dessert RM6.50

Black sesame dessert – not as nutty and aromatic as I expected

In addition to fresh drinks like lemongrass tea, pineapple, and fruit tea, you can also order a cup of Mama Kim Coffee. Have a sip of the local coffee with a bite of the complimentary coconut biscuit. And of course, diehard coconut biscuit fans can buy the biscuit at the eatery too.

Pineapple juice

Mama Kim Coffee with complimentary coconut biscuits

The eatery is open daily from 8am to 10pm. For those waking up early, the breakfast menu offers healthy good deals. Choose between the soup noodles, fried noodles or porridge, with prices starting from RM3.90 to RM7.50.

Three Fifteen @ Jelutong, Penang

April 3, 2019 By Keith Leave a Comment

Penang Malaysia advice.

Latest article presented from Ken Hunts Food. Surely one of the most popular providers of free material available.

Three Fifteen 三点三 Meet is a place that you get to enjoy local breakfast in a city but surrounded by serene village setting. It’s hard to come by… imagine enjoying local Kaya Butter Toast while watching the chickens moving freely within the compound. The place can be found right opposite to Lam Wah Ee Hospital along Jalan Tan Sri Teh Ewe Lim; it is manned by one of the residents staying in the village houses, part of the compound is transformed into a breakfast place. Do not expect big menu though… merely simple Hainanese-styled Toasts, Polo Bun, Half Boiled Egg etc. It is one of the best places to visit aside from Seafood Noodle and Porridge that you can find at Gurney Drive, Penang.

Three Fifteen uses Charcoal to toast the bread, imparting a mellow, but distinctive smokiness to the Toast. Though nothing particularly amazing about the Kaya, the Toasts do make great addition to the Hainanese-styled breakfast and complete everything. Three Fifteen’s specialty is the Polo Bun… with additional toppings. We had ours with Cheese, greens and slivers of Turkey Ham. The outer layer of the Polo Bun carries a little sweetness so it is an interesting match with the savory toppings. Nothing particularly interesting here though.
