You may have heard of the famous Char Koay Teow, Nasi Lemak, and Asam Laksa, but you may have never heard of a dish called Mushroom Chicken Hor Fun. This unique recipe has been going on for two generations, originating from the father of the current owner. According to the uncle, he has been operating his hawker business in the same coffee shop for more than 30 years. His experience has allowed many loyal patrons and new customers to continue enjoying his father’s legacy.

A must-try for noodle fans! The Mushroom Chicken Hor Fun comes in two versions: dry and soup, according to the patron’s preference. The dry version gives you a bowl of braised chicken broth, which has a much viscous consistency, along with a mix of flat noodles and rice vermicelli. As for the ingredients, the owner adds chopped Napa cabbage, chicken pieces, juicy mushroom, wood ear, and red chilli for a hint of spice.

If you opt for a lighter taste, the soup version will be a perfect choice. It comes with the same ingredients but with a clear, thin soup that carries the same flavoursome blend of both chicken and mushroom. Not to mention you can also pick your own choice of noodles from the options including hor fun, yellow noodles, and both thick and thin vermicelli.

The Check-Out Feature On MySejahtera: Here Is What You Need To Know

September 4, 2021 By Keith

A really good article on Penang.

MySejahtera has received a major update today that carries several interesting changes to the national COVID-19 app. One of them is the new interface for the app’s Check-in section which not only shown the visibility of users’ risk status but it also now displays their vaccination status as well.

Aside from that, the update v1.0.45 also marked the debut of the check-out feature on MySejahtera. According to Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin who announced the update through a tweet yesterday, the new feature is meant to help improve the contact tracing process.

The @my_sejahtera team will push a new build tonight making it easier for people to display their risk level and vaccination status – this will ease living with Covid, together.

Will further update and improve the app over the coming weeks. pic.twitter.com/HlClvaA6dQ

— Khairy Jamaluddin 🇲🇾🌺 (@Khairykj) September 2, 2021

After using the newly updated app for iOS earlier today, we decided to craft this brief guide to share our experience. So, let’s dig in.

HOW TO OBTAIN THE CHECK-OUT FEATURE

Android

If you using Apple and Huawei devices, then the MySejahtera update v1.0.45 is already available for you.

For Apple users, just go to the App Store on your device, search for the MySejahtera listing, and press update. Similarly, Huawei users can obtain the update from AppGallery.

App Store
[L] MySejahtera’s iOS version history alongside the latest version release on Huawei AppGallery (top right) and Google Play (bottom right).

While this sounds rather odd, the update is somehow not yet available for Android. At the time this article goes live, the Android version of MySejahtera is currently two updates behind as the version listed on Google Play is still v1.0.42 which was released into the marketplace on 2 August 2021.

This means Android devices have not yet even received the new QR code format for the digital vaccination certificate which was implemented as part of the update v1.0.43 that was released on 20 August. The new format was designed to work with another app called Vaccine Certificate Verifier that we have discussed in detail through this report.

Apple
[L – R]: The digital vaccine certificate on MySejahtera v1.0.43/v1.0.45 and v1.0.42.

On a related note, it seems that MySejahtera’s development team decided to jump from v1.0.43 straight to v1.0.45. The reason is not known but it is not exactly a unique decision though as the team has also skipped v1.0.41, v1.0.36, v1.0.32, and much more previously.

HOW DOES IT WORK

Google

In its essence, the update v1.0.45 for MySejahtera did not bring any changes to the existing check-in process. Even though the home page of the app’s Check-in section looks slightly different now, the process is still the same: click the Check-in button on the splash page, scan the QR code, and the check-in success page would then appear.

However, pay closer attention to the check-in success page and you should notice the check-out button at the bottom of the page. Once you press that button, the check-out success page would then appear:

Health Minister

As you can see, the check-out success page has the same design as its check-in counterpart except for the “Out” label on the top part of the box. Alternatively, you can also check-out using the Last Check-in box on MySejahtera’s Check-in section which is also one of the new additions to the app that was delivered via update v1.0.45.

Huawei

What if you have to perform check-in to multiple locations back-to-back? For example, at a shopping mall, whereby you have to check-in at each shop that you visited individually. Certain malls like Mid Valley Megamall have even put up MySejahtera’s check-in QR code for different floors.

In other words, how can you perform check-out from a previous location? So, what you need to do here is go to the home page of MySejahtera’s Check-in section and click on History that is located within the Last Check-in box.

Khairy Jamaluddin

After that, click on the location that you want to check-out and its check-in success page would appear again. From there, just press the check-out button as per what we have mentioned before and you are done.

With update 1.0.45, the History log will also keep track of your check-out activities. Unfortunately, there is no bulk check-out option though as you have to perform it on each location individually.

Minister

For many of us, we don’t really think too much of MySejahtera once we have performed the required check-in process. Hence, it may take quite some time for many to get used to the idea of checking out from their location even though the intention behind the implementation sounds rather vital.

Meanwhile, do expect additional changes to be implemented on MySejahtera in the coming weeks and months as Minister Khairy has hinted in his tweet yesterday that there are still more things to come as far as the app is concerned. On that note, we do hope that the development team can at least update the Android version of the app first before going any further or may risk losing vital statistics as the majority of the population is using Android devices.

Fossil Gen 6 Smartwatch Series Now Official; Price Starts From US$299

August 31, 2021 By Keith

A really good post about Malaysia.

The Fossil Gen 6 line-up is now official. As you may recall, the listing for the new smartwatch series was accidentally leaked on Amazon two weeks prior, revealing much of its specifications and design.

As previously reported, the Gen 6 is one of the first wearables to be equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 4100+ chipset. This variant is claimed to offer faster performance in terms of processing speeds and charging, as well as more efficient power consumption when compared to the standard chip. Paired together with the SoC is 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage capacity. Fossil says that the Gen 6 will come with Wear OS 2 upon launch, but noted it would still receive the new Google-Samsung developed Wear OS sometime next year via a firmware update.

The smartwatch is available in two different designs: a standard stainless steel case by Fossil, and the more elegant-looking Michael Kors edition. Both are available in 42mm and 44mm sizes, which also share the same 1.28-inch OLED touch display. On the right-hand side are three buttons, with the middle also functioning as a rotating dial. The new wearable is also rated 3ATM in terms of water resistance.

Found onboard the Fossil Gen 6 are heart rate and SpO2 sensors for health tracking, as well as miscellaneous sensors such as an accelerometer, altimeter, ambient light, compass, gyroscope, and off-body IR. Other than that, it also features a built-in speaker and microphone, Bluetooth 5.0 and WiFi connectivity, as well as GPS and NFC support.

Fossil claims that the new wearable is able to last over 24 hours of usage in a single charge, which could be extended further by enabling the Extended Mode. When activated, the watch will then disable several built-in features in favour for a longer battery life. The Gen 6 also comes with fast charging support, which is said to be capable of topping up 80% charge in just 30 minutes.

Fossil Gen 6 Now Official

The Fossil Gen 6 line-up starts from US$299 (~RM1,242) and is slated to be shipped out sometime by late September. Unfortunately, there’s no word on a local release at this current time.

Leak Suggests Upcoming Fitbit Charge 5 To Feature A Refreshed Design

August 17, 2021 By Keith

A great post on Malaysia.

Renders of an unannounced Fitbit Charge 5 smartband have made their way online, thanks to leakster Evan Blass (aka evleaks). As seen from the photos, it appears that the next generation wearable will sport a refreshed design and more interestingly, a full-colour display.

Unlike its predecessors, the supposedly upcoming smartband features a tall but rounded screen and a curvier body. On each side of the device are what appears to be long capacitive control panels for user interaction, which is somewhat a significant upgrade over the tiny single-sided panel featured on the third and fourth generation models. And should these leaked renders be proven accurate, this would make the Charge 5 to be the first from the series to feature a non-monotonous display.

Not much is known regarding the smartband’s specifications, battery life, or its included health and fitness monitoring features. However, it is safe to assume that it will likely inherit most of its predecessor’s main functionalities such as heart rate, sleep and workout tracking, as well as oxygen saturation monitoring, phone-to-wearable notifications, and several others.

Fitbit Charge 5 Leak Design

Based on the renders provided by Blass, the allegedly upcoming Fitbit Charge 5 would be offered in three colour options: black, grey, and beige. Unfortunately, the leakster did not mention when the smartband is expected to be launched. Regardless, there’s a chance that the Google-owned brand wearables company may announce it soon, especially given Blass’ track record of leaking product renders often a couple of months or weeks prior to their official unveiling.

Logitech Debuts New Zone True Wireless Earbuds For Professionals; Retailing At US$ 299

August 4, 2021 By Keith

An interesting post on Penang.

Logitech has unveiled its new Zone True Wireless Earbuds, which are designed with business professionals in mind. On top of functioning as regular earbuds, the company emphasised that the new product is also optimised for video conferencing – evident by the certification it has received by three major players in the field: Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet.

The company says that the earbuds design approach is aimed to give professionals a more presentable appearance during conferencing, as opposed to the more “call center” like look when donning over-ear headsets. But despite being offered as an alternative, it appears that Logitech isn’t pulling any punches from adding some premium-tier features to the new Zone True Wireless either.

Logitech Zone True Wireless Earbuds For Professionals Zoom Microsoft Google

Its fancy design aside, the earbuds come with active noise cancelling (ANC) capabilities, along with noise cancelling microphones to ensure for clear sounding calls. Connectivity is where things get interesting for the Zone True Wireless. Aside from featuring multipoint Bluetooth capability that enables you to switch between multiple devices, it also comes with the option to connect to certain platforms via a USB-A or USB-C receiver. Logitech did not detail if there are any differences in terms of latency between these different modes of connection.

Logitech Zone True Wireless Earbuds For Professionals Zoom Microsoft Google

As for battery life, the company claims that the Zone True Wireless Earbuds are able to last up to seven hours with ANC activated, and up to 12 hours with it off. Meanwhile, the included charging case can provide the buds an additional 17 or so hours, and comes with fast charging as well as Qi Wireless charging support.

Other than that, the earbuds are also water and dust resistant with a rating of IP68. And the same applies to its case as well, although it carries a lower IP54 rating instead.

The new Logitech Zone True Wireless Earbuds will arrive globally in Fall 2021 at a retail price of US$ 299 (~RM 1,260), and are available in two colour options: graphite and rose. Logitech has not confirmed whether the buds would see a release in Malaysia at this time.

The history of the land at Infinity Beachfront Condominium

July 13, 2021 By Keith

A great article on Penang Malaysia.

Infinity Beachfront Condominium (Source: Google Street View)

By Emilia Ismail

What started with a Thai Native couple’s intense love for Penang, ended up with court battles that lasted three generations.

Some sixty years ago, Boonsom Boonyanit and her husband, a Thai of Chinese origin named Sie Guan Tjang @ Sie Hang Bok, fell in love with Penang, so much so that Sie bought two pieces of beachfront land in Tanjung Bungah to build their retirement home. In 1967, Sie transferred these lands to his wife through a memorandum of transfer.

boonsom-boonyanit-and-husband

In 1989, Boonsom Boonyanit’s eldest son came across an advertisement placed by a Penang law firm while browsing “Thairat,” a Thai newspaper. The ad requested anyone interested in two pieces of land — that belong to his mother — to come forward.

The family accountant found out that someone had impersonated Madam Boonsom. Here is how the imposter did it:

  • Someone who called herself “Sun Yok Eng @ Boonsom Boonyanit” had affirmed a statutory declaration (a declaration you write and affirm to be true in front of a special witness such as a commissioner of oaths) on the 18th of June 1988.
  • This statutory declaration stated that she was the landowner and that she had lost the original title to it. An interesting point to note is that the passport number that appeared on the declaration was “K/P Thailand No. 000386”.
  • This declaration was then used to obtain a certified true copy of the land title from the authorities.
  • “Mrs. Boonsom” then affirmed a second statutory declaration on the 6th of April 1989. An excerpt from the declaration reads as follows, “the names Mrs. Boonsom Boonyanit in my International Passport No. N-033852 and Sun Yok Eng @ Boonsom Boonyanit in the said ACT (land title) in respect of the said property refer to the same and one person, that is Mrs. Boonsom Boonyanit”.
  • The rogue Mrs. Boonsom then used this second declaration to register the land in the name of the purchaser, Adorna Properties.
  • In 1989, The two pieces of land were sold for RM1.8million without the knowledge of the real Madam Boonsom.

Boonsom lost no time in bringing the matter to court to seek justice — the return of her property. The court battle went on for almost thirty years.

Madam Boonsom passed away on the 23rd of May 2000 and the legal battles were continued by her sons and grandsons.

In 2018, the Malaysian government reached an amicable settlement with the estate of Boonsom Boonyanit. There is no information available to the public on the exact settlement sum and whether the same has been paid.

Today, the Infinity Beachfront Condominiums stand on what was Madam Boonsom’s planned retirement home. Adorna had sold the land to Diamaward (M) Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Hunza Properties Berhad, for RM13,220,000 on the 7th of October 2004.

Brickit Is An App That Scans LEGO Bricks And Recommends You What To Build

July 4, 2021 By Keith

A great post on Malaysia.

If you’re a LEGO fanatic, chances are that you probably have a bunch of extra bricks stored somewhere in your home. If you’ve been having trouble finding the inspiration to build anything with them, then you may want to consider downloading a nifty fan-made mobile app called Brickit. What it does is that it will recommend a variety of potential bite-sized projects by scanning your brick pile via your smartphone camera.

This is thanks to the magic of Brickit’s built-in AI which can identify different types, colour and even number of LEGO bricks or parts. After a successful scan, the app will then highlight relevant bricks and list out at least one suggested build that you can work on with what you currently have. And yes, it will also provide you with the instructions on how to build them.

Brickit App iOS iPhone Lego

Based on the examples shown in the app’s preview on its website and Apple App Store, these projects include simple miniature replicas of vehicles, animals, electronics and so on. And don’t worry if you lack the same coloured bricks as per the instructions, as Brickit encourages you to customise each build with your own personal touch.

Other than that, the app includes a photo sharing feature where you can snap a photo of the completed build and share it with other users. Concurrently, you’ll be able to browse the various kits that others have shared on the platform as well by navigating to the in-app Gallery.

Brickit App iOS iPhone Lego

As promising as all of this may sound, do keep in mind that Brickit is not always accurate and would not guarantee a build after every scan. It’s also worth noting that the app is unable to identify DUPLO or LEGO Technic parts, and will require you to lay out your bricks on a flat, non-textured surface for the scanning process. Lastly, it will not necessarily work if you decide to scan bricks that stored in a container.

Brickit App iOS iPhone Lego

For those wanting to try the app for themselves, it is available now and is free to download, but only for iPhone users for the time being. Android users will have to wait a while longer as Brickit is still in development for Google’s mobile platform. This version of the app will only see a launch sometime in fall of 2021, the developer noted on its official website.

As mentioned earlier, Brickit is entirely fan-made and is not affiliated with LEGO. Seeing the app’s amazing potential, it wouldn’t be surprising if the famed Danish toy maker decides to acquire it somewhere down the line.

MEASAT-3 Still Going Through Stabilization Process: May Affect Some Astro Customers

June 27, 2021 By Keith

A really good article on Malaysia.

Looks like the recent channel disruption that was experienced by some Astro customers out there will continue for quite some time. As it turns out, the MEASAT-3 satellite is not yet functioning at the optimal level.

This is despite the statement released by MCMC on 24 June which said that MEASAT has managed to bring the satellite under its control on 24 June. The company has also reiterated this once again through a separate press release that was published on its website on 26 June [pdf] although in the same statement, MEASAT has also noted that some customers may continue to experience intermittent disruption for the next few days.

astro
SCNA error usually happens when it rains due to rain fade but the recent outage that hit MEASAT-3 caused the error to appear to some users during clear weather.

In another update which was published earlier today [pdf], MEASAT said that it needs more time to finish the stabilisation process. At the same time, Astro has acknowledged the issue faced by MEASAT-3 and has since moved some of its channels to other MEASAT satellites.

However, the pay-TV operator also noted that customers in high-rise buildings or those that have opted for custom installation in their home such as a Multiroom setup may still not able to access certain channels. Not surprisingly, some customers have been asking for compensation due to the prolonged disruption on their Astro service although what Astro has offered so far is only two weeks of access for selected channels from 1 to 14 July.

boeing
MEASAT and Astro broadcast centres in Cyberjaya are located next to each other.

MEASAT-3 was originally launched in December 2006 and is reaching end-of-life very soon since the satellite is said to have an operational lifetime of 15 years. Astro is currently using 12 transponders on the satellite although the company will be not using them anymore once MEASAT-3d goes operational in 2022.

Like your phone, you can now control Porsche’s new infotainment system with “Hey Porsche”

June 20, 2021 By Keith

A great article on Malaysia.

For some reason still unbeknownst to us, everyone and their aunts seem to be hopping onto the personal assistant train at the moment. Porsche has just unveiled its sixth-generation infotainment system (PCM 6.0) that is set to debut on the 911, Cayenne, and Panamera models in the coming months, and – you guessed it – it now comes with a new “Hey Porsche” voice command system. Who actually uses these aside from when they’re trying to show off to their friends?

Android

Anyway, just like Siri or the Google Assistant on your phones, the Voice Pilot voice assistant can now understand instructions in natural language. For example, when you say “Hey Porsche, I’m feeling cold”, the infotainment system will now automatically increase the climate control temperature.

Other things that can be controlled via the voice assistant include massage seats, ambient lighting, and navigation system. Porsche says that the system is “permanently online” and will continually learn new phrases, so it’ll constantly improve itself to provide more support to the driver.

Google

Speaking of navigation, Porsche says that the new hardware and software architecture allows for even faster route calculations by the navigation system, and thanks to its always-on connectivity, real-time traffic information is also always taken into account in this process.

BMW has also recently introduced its iDrive 8.0 infotainment system, check it out in action here.

To be honest though, we think that most people will most likely still use Waze or Google Maps via wireless Apple CarPlay or the new Android Auto (no wireless here, sorry) connectivity. Apple Music and Podcasts are also now directly integrated into Porsche’s new infotainment system, so iPhone users can access “more than 75 million songs” directly from the car itself, no smartphone connection necessary.

iPhone

Other new features on the PCM 6.0 infotainment system include a new smartphone-integrated calendar, which will let you dial into conference calls using the calendar service, as well as a built-in “good to know” operating manual.

But the most interesting feature of all (in our opinion, at least) is the “Soundtrack My Life” app, which automatically creates a personalised soundtrack in real time based on your driving style, so you can feel like a movie star on every drive.

Porsche

The music will swell up with intensity under hard acceleration and cornering, but drops to a calmer pace at lower speeds or at a traffic light. Your spirited drive through the B roads on the weekend will feel very different from a sleepy, Monday morning drive to work.

Instead of licensing existing songs, Porsche has composed its own movie score-like music for the service. The Soundtrack My Life app is currently still in the beta testing phase, but the company says that it’ll also be made available in the Porsche Connect mobile app in the future.

Samsung Display Providing Foldable Screens To Vivo And Xiaomi

June 9, 2021 By Keith

An informative article about Malaysia.

Recently, Korean news outlet ETNews reported that Samsung is selling its ultra-thin glass (UTG) to Google for an upcoming foldable phone. Now, another Korean news outlet, TheElec, reports that the company is also supplying foldable OLED displays to two other brands. They are Vivo and Xiaomi, which are also poised to release their own foldable phones.

The report states that Google’s device will make use of a 7.6-inch panel that folds inwards. No mention of a secondary display for this one as of yet. As for Vivo’s model, it is said to be getting an 8-inch main screen and a 6.5-inch secondary screen. No details on the new Xiaomi foldable phone, though.

Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold

Among the three brands now buying displays from Samsung, only Xiaomi has experience in making a foldable phone. The company announced the Mi Mix Fold back in March. Chances are we will see something similar when the new model gets released.

Incidentally, the report also says that the OLED panel production for all three companies will only start in October. The report goes on to say that all three will be revealed in the fourth quarter of the year. With both display production and announcement happening in the same time window, their availability seems unlikely to be within 2021.
