Ichi Tong 一桐 @ Prangin Lane, Georgetown, Penang.

February 27, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

A great article on Penang Malaysia.

If you do like a bowl of solid, classic Chinese noodles, you have to put Ichi Tong 一桐 on your radar. This new restaurant is associated with Kochabi Double Content previously located at Penang Times Square and has a cafe-like interior decor but the menu has a list of solid Asian-Taiwanese dishes (though mostly noodle dishes). Expect to find Taiwanese-style Beef Noodles or Sze Chuan-influenced Ma-La Noodles or the local Fish Meat Noodles; prices are mid-average but the dining atmosphere is comfortable and the food quality is promising… definitely worth checking out.

Start with the Signature Beef Tok Tok which our choice of noodle was Wan Ton Noodles, the broth was thick and rich, with a bold Tomato flavor and a touch of sweetness. There were chunks of Beef, braised Radish and some Beef Balls. It was quite comfortable on the palate and we were happy with the lovely al-dente texture of the noodles. A contrary to the boldly-flavored Beef Noodles… the Fresh Tiger Grouper Mi Shua with Tomato Milk Soup registered milder flavors (but not that it was under-seasoned). The thickly cut Grouper meat was fresh and overall, we thought it was a decent bowl of Fish noodles. The Dumplings were alright, nothing out of the ordinary. A place with some solid noodle choices.

S.A.B Cafe – Sri Ananda Bahwan Cafe at Farlim, Penang – What2seeonline.com

February 24, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

A great post about Penang Malaysia.

Sri Ananda Bahwan, a name well-known for its Indian banana leaf set meals has since ventured into its first cafe-style outlet in Farlim Square, Penang. With its corner dining spot located right opposite Farlim Sunshine Supermarket, the halal-certified cafe known as S.A.B Cafe places tops for the younger generation diners.

The setting: clean and modern space with panes of glass bringing in light and warmth. The kitchen has a tiny opening, revealing kitchen staff at work and emitting tantalizing aroma of curries and spices.

The menu is simple, listing a variety of southern and northern Indian cuisine. Titillate your taste buds with the banana leaf set meals besides briyani rice and a slew of fragrant flavorful chicken and vegetarian dishes.

Between the two of us, we shared a Tandoori Set (with accompanying naan bread) together with a Mushroom Masala, and Chicken Vindaloo – a curry dish with moderate heat.

The combination of the warm naan and the well-spiced curries went perfectly well. The piece of naan is certainly not enough to sop up the curries and we ended up having another piece.

Happy and settled, we ended off the meal with some sweets. There are a couple of colorful bite-size delicacies displayed on the counter and we ended up with several pieces.

The adorable kaju apple and kaju carrot with the right sweetness are great options and made even more pleasurable by the accompanying glass of hot milk tea (teh tarik). Other drinks offered at the cafe include lassi, fruit juices, and milkshake.

Quick Review: D55L/Ativa could be Perodua’s new King of the Road

February 24, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An interesting article on Penang.

So Perodua invited a few of us over to their headquarters today to test drive the all-new Perodua Ativa – a name if we can now confident use for Perodua’s first ever turbocharged vehicle with a CVT gearbox.

Unfortunately, we were not allowed to film nor shoot any of the test activities from today so you’ll just have to make do with words.

While 98 hp and 140 Nm from a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder engine paired to a CVT may not sound like much in the context of an SUV, all prior concerns about it being underpowered were completely forgotten the moment we tapped on the throttle.

Geography of Malaysia

Two words came to mind – responsive and eager. Firstly we brought to test the Ativa on a slope, to see how it would cope on an uphill climb.

Granted there were only two passengers in the car (myself and the instructor) but even when we lifted off the throttle midway through the slope, the Ativa had no problems getting the momentum going again.

On the long straights, the Ativa yet again proved that it’s more powerful than what is suggested on the spec sheet – speaking strictly in the context of a turbocharged 1.0-litre engine, of course.

Between the 70 km/h to 80 km/h, acceleration was eager and almost effortless all the way up to 130 km/h. At least that’s what we clocked; other media representatives claimed that the Ativa still had more to give beyond that speed.

When we tried to manually up and downshift through the CVT gearbox’s seven virtual gears, like the engine, the CVT gearbox was also quick to respond. Positioned on the steering is a POWER button that sharpens the engine’s response even more.

At speeds in excess of 100 km/h, the environment in the cabin was calm with minimal wind noise and even when we tested the Ativa on a stretch of uneven tarmac and a series of speed bumps, the Ativa absorbed all the shocks with the refinement of a car twice its price.

We suspect that this is due to the Ativa’s stiffer, more rigid chassis which allows the car’s suspension to be more comfort-oriented.

Given the surprise performance package from such an assuming exterior, and coupled with superb stability unmatched by any Perodua before this, it’s hard to ignore that this could be Perodua’s new King of the Road.

Can the Ativa do for Perodua what they Myvi achieved in the last decade? Only time will tell but we suspect that it will attract more suitors than haters solely from the way it drives and handles.

Unfortunately, that’s all the feedback we can share for now although there’ll be more coming your way from 3rd of March onwards. Stay tuned!

February 23, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An informative post about Penang.

Chateraise Patisserie

Wow! This is like, their second outlet in Penang right? Last year when they first docked their outlet at Gurney Plaza, the Chateraise Patisserie had already attracted a long snaking, 2 hours queue. So it’s probably for the best that they open up another one at Penang’s most prominent mall.

In case you missed the news, Chateraise Patisserie is a popular patisserie that is originated from Japan. They serve an abundance of dessert and pastry choices that are made with fresh ingredients imported from the land of the rising sun. So it really comes as no surprise when people swarmed them like crazy. Although they have yet to announce their opening date, everyone is obviously excited about the second outlet at Queensbay Mall.
