Steam Deck Targets 30FPS At Native Resolution For All Games

Valve unveiled the Steam Deck last week. At the time, the company already unveiled all the most important bits of information about the handheld gaming PC. But it looks like the company is still drip-feeding bits of information about the device. And a new one is regarding the expected performance that users can expect from it.

In an interview with IGN, Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais explains that the Steam Deck is targeting 30fps gameplay at its native resolution of 800p. He explains that the company has tested the device with all the games released this year, and it managed to run them “without issues”. He also attributes “industry trends” of favouring stable framerates over high resolutions as being in the handheld’s favour.

Which is quite a thing to say, considering both metrics are just about a single step below what gamers would call the standard. After all, if you ask what most gamers want in games, the most common answer will probably be 60fps, and a range of between 1080p and 1440p for resolution.

Perhaps it is a compromise that Valve expects gamers to be fine with, due to the portable nature of the Steam Deck. And it’s probably not without merit, since people are fine with the Nintendo Switch and its 720p resolution while in handheld mode.

Someone In Japan Got Arrested For Selling Modded Breath Of The Wild Save Files

Back in February, we saw reports of a man getting arrested in Japan for selling hacked Pokemon for the franchise’s latest installments. More recently, someone just got caught doing something similar, but for another Nintendo IP. Said person was caught selling modded save files for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

The Broadcasting System of Niigata reports that a Tokyo resident was detained on 8 July for said offense. Originally, the modded save data was put up in an auction site in April for JPY3500 (~RM133). The listing was dubbed “the strongest software”, with boosted stats and rare items that would be tricky to obtain via normal gameplay.

Though the person was caught selling modded save files for Breath of the Wild, it wasn’t the only game he was modding saves for. The reports states that he also admitted to doing the same for other games, earning JPY10 million (~RM380000) since December 2019.

The man is charged under Japan’s Unfair Competition Prevention law, under which modding of save files isn’t illegal. But it immediately steps outside legal realms once the modded save files start going on sale. And as we saw previously, Nintendo is very quick to take action when it comes to its own IPs.

Netmarble Announces Marvel Future Revolution Mobile Game

Mobile games developer Netmarble worked with Marvel Entertainment for the Future Fight mobile title. Now the two companies have announced a new mobile game, called Marvel Future Revolution. And as far as mobile titles go, this game looks to be pretty large in scale.

On the surface, Marvel Future Revolution is touted as an open world title. Which is pretty ambitious for a mobile game, to say the least. The central plot sees the phenomenon called the Convergence, which sees the multiverses colliding with each other.

This serves as the explanation for multiple copies of the same heroes appearing in the same space during multiplayer segments. And there are a few, which are touted as end-game content. One PvP mode sees two teams of 10 players duke it out against each other. Another is a PvPvE mode that hosts up to 50 players at the same time.

To help players make their superhero choice stand out is the customisation system. Reps from Marvel and Netmarble said that there will be costumes from the many different source materials that the heroes have appeared in. But rather than just pick a costume and go with it, you can pick specific parts of each costume for a unique look.

For now, Marvel Future Revolution does not yet have a specific release date beyond a vague second half of the year. But you can pre-register so that you’re notified when that happens, for both Android and iOS. It’s a free-to-play title, but what’s the monetisation strategy like remains to be seen.

Fatal Frame Gets A Pachinko Machine Instead Of Another Game

A really good post on Penang.

Fatal Frame last got a game added to the series all the way back in 2014, in the form of Maiden of Black Water. Now, seven years later, the name is back in the news. But not because there’s a new game that’s in the works. Instead, the series is getting the pachinko treatment.

As found by Kotaku East, a trailer for the Fatal Frame pachinko machine has been recently released. It actually looks quite good, which makes it a shame that it’s a pachinko trailer and not one for a video game. At least the trailer is nice enough to warn you of “shocking” scenes (read: jumpscares).

This makes another game series that has fallen into the pachinko life support. Various Konami IPs have had the same fate, from Metal Gear to Castlevania. What makes the Fatal Frame one a little bit surprising is that it’s not a Konami-owned series, but is shared between Koei Tecmo and Nintendo.

Early last year, we saw reports of a new Fatal Frame movie being in the works. Unfortunately, we have not heard of anything new since. And that looks to be the only upcoming thing that fans of the series can look forward to.

Apple Patent Describes Showing 3D Images On Flat Screens Without Need For Glasses

Getting 3D images to work on consumer devices, especially without the need for specialised glasses, is not easy. But an Apple patent describes a method that the company is considering using to make it happen. But while it answers that half of the equation, it raises more on the other.

The Apple patent describes getting a flat screen, presumably that of an iPhone or iPad, to show 3D images for VR and AR content. But this doesn’t involve having two screens for that the way VR and AR headsets work. Instead, it will alternate rows of pixels in a screen, so that one set of pixel rows show one image, and the other shows the second.

But as mentioned earlier, the patent only describes the way the screen will simulate the overlapping of two images for the 3D effect. What the patent doesn’t mention is the user side of things. Like the way this will help users create the 3D depth without the help of glasses or goggles. Nor does it say if there’s any supporting tech, like gaze detection that we see on the Nintendo 3DS.

As is always the case with patents, having one filed doesn’t mean Apple will actually make something with this tech. And considering the challenges behind it, it probably won’t be anytime soon until we see it, if ever.

CDPR Details Upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 Patch 1.2

CD Projekt Red delayed patch 1.2 for Cyberpunk 2077 from February to the end of March. With that patch coming soon, the developers have released details about what players can expect in it. And it is pretty massive in scale, addressing a number of the biggest issues concerning gameplay.

The first is regarding the police spawning immediately behind you when you get wanted. Once the patch rolls out, they will stop materialising out of thin air. A scout drone will also appear in advance to give the impression that the police are assessing the situation.

On vehicles, CDPR said that the new patch will add a new Steering Sensitivity option. This will hopefully make your car more obedient to your inputs, rather than plowing straight ahead when you turn the steering wheel. The patch will also add an Unstuck feature to Cyberpunk 2077. And it kicks in when you’re hitting the accelerator paddle but not moving. In such situations, you can rock your vehicle to get it the right way up.

And finally, there’s a new option to turn off dodge by double-tapping a directional input. Which is great if you frequently get frustrated by dodging when all you wanted was to make quick micro-adjustments to your position.

You read the patch notes yourself by following the link below. CDPR has written it in a very tongue-in-cheek way with a TV news format. That could serve as its own form of entertainment. Though the devs did not say when will Cyberpunk 2077 actually get the patch 1.2.
