Boston Coffee @ Victoria Street, Georgetown, Penang.

February 25, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An interesting article on Malaysia.

One of the latest dining and hang-out destinations that has taken social media by a storm is Boston Coffee, a new cafe housed in a warehouse-like space with an industrial style interior decor. This latest spot can be found at Victoria Street, near to the junction to China Street. The exterior barely tells a thing about the cafe but once you have stepped inside, you will be amazed by the well-lit, chic interior decor. On the food offering, there’s a Western menu with rather limited choices but the beverage list is extensive. The food menu is a little less-exciting for now but the place is still a great spot to hang out over a cup of drinks.

The main menu is pretty limited- with only mains available. We managed to try two dishes- Garlic Butter Salmone (Rm 30) and Malus Chic Domestica. The former one was basically fried Salmon served with Garlic sauce as well as a side of greens. The Salmon was overcooked and had a rough texture. The accompanying sauce with a mild spiciness was alright, the sides were nicely cooked either. A pretty normal-average dish. Malus Chic Domestica has a more interesting flavor combo- roast Chicken Thigh served with Apple sauce and a side of Deep Fried Apple as well as greens. Like the earlier dish, the Chicken was overcooked with a dry and rough texture. The flavor combo was something like Turkey with Cranberry sauce… sweet and savory. Not too bad but can be better.

Zhen Shi Shen Cafe at Victoria Street, George Town, Penang – What2seeonline.com

February 21, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An interesting article about Penang Malaysia.

Down in Victoria Street in George Town, Penang, one will find a string of cafes and restaurants. If you are looking for one serving noodles and Asian snacks, it is worth dropping by Zhen Shi Shen cafe 真食神. Located in the compound of Boon San Tong Khoo Kongsi, the outlet is a convenient place to dine in with its daily opening breakfast, lunch, and teatime hours (9am till 5pm).

Noodles are popular in Zhen Shi Shen. If you are a mantis prawn loving person, you will love the Shi Shen noodles 食神面线. It is all about a balance of savory sweet broth, impeccably fresh deep-fried mantis prawns and chopped garlic, chilli sauce, and coriander to freshen it all.

You can choose to have the Shi Shen Misua (thin noodle), Shi Shen Tao Qiam (bean strip) or the Shi Shen Bihun (rice noodle), priced at RM7.80 for a medium size and RM11.80 for a large serving.

You would be surprised to see how the mantis prawns are being prepared in front of the outlet.

While the noodle appears to be the default dish, the owner also charms diners with traditional snacks such as Steamed Taro Cake 芋头糕 and deep-fried Nishi 西亚煎.

The soft texture steamed yam cake with generous amount of yam comes with plenty of fried dried shrimp and shallots. It is delicious simply dipped in homemade chili sauce with a kick of garlic.

For the deep-fried Nishi, you will find batter with bits of chopped vegetables and a choice of seafood – shrimp, crab or octopus. A serving of shrimp nishi at RM12 comes with four pieces of golden brown nishi with crunchy sides and a good ratio of shrimp.

The one-page food menu also includes a range of croissants and bread. Depending on the filling, the croissants run between RM4.80 to RM9.80.

Little Collins Street Cafe @ Burmah Road, Georgetown, Penang.

February 13, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An informative post about Malaysia.

One of the latest cafe spots that any cafe hoppers should check out is Little Collins Street Cafe, found right next to the bustling Burmah Road. This new cafe is manned by the same team from Belle and Cream, but offering a completely different atmosphere and more food items (mostly pastries). The seating spaces are available on ground floor and upper floor though the former one is more like a communal seating area. On the food menu- most items are pastries, cookies and cakes, there is no main menu. Quite a nice place to check out especially on the minimalist interior decor… would paint a nice picture to your social media page.

Matcha Furuto (Rm 19)

We did not feel like having cakes or cookies so naturally, the pastries became our only option. We had the Cream Cheese Croissant, Pistachio Escargot and Chocolate Ganache. All of them were alright except that they were left there for quite some time and the texture became rubbery. They should heat up before serving to us… for the crisp, flaky texture. The Matcha Furuto was great though- amazing flavor with a sleek sweetness.
