Honda Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (HMSB) has recently announced the arrival of its first woman Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Madoka Chujo who succeeded Mr. Toichi Ishiyama.

Commenting on her new role at Honda Malaysia that commenced on April 1st 2021, Ms Chujo said, “Malaysia is indeed an important market in the Asia and Oceania region with Honda Malaysia achieving various significant sales milestones and has become one of the leading automotive brands in the country.

Could the City Hatchback be Ms Chujo first product launch in Malaysia?

“I am looking forward and excited for my first assignment as the MD and CEO of Honda Malaysia, and at the same time I am also eager to explore Malaysia as the country is unique and a melting pot of diverse cultures and people, with enormous potential and of course a fast-paced work environment.”

Ms Chujo has been with the Honda brand for 23 years in various roles in Japan, China, Spain and most recently as Vice President of Honda Canada Inc. During his tenure of over three years in Malaysia, Mr. Ishiyama successfully led Honda Malaysia to achieve 900,000 units sales in 2019 and also maintained its position as the number one non-national vehicle brand for six consecutive years since 2015. In addition, under Mr. Ishiyama’s watch, the company celebrated a remarkable milestone of reaching the one-millionth sales unit in March 2021. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as Mr. Ishiyama had to manoeuvre the company through a challenging time during the COVID-19 pandemic since March last year.

POCO F3 and X3 Pro Heading To Malaysia This Week With A Starting Price of RM 899

March 22, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An informative post about Penang.

POCO today has announced two new phones for the global market in the form of F3 and X3 Pro. Surprisingly, both of them will be heading to Malaysia this week itself with F3 will be available for purchase on 27 March which will come just few days after the release of X3 Pro on 24 March.

The F3 is essentially a rebranded Redmi K40 that was released in China late last month which is why it carries the same physical design and specifications. Powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 870, the phone also features a 6.67-inch Samsung E4 AMOLED Full HD+ display that also has a 120Hz refresh rate, 360Hz touch sampling rate, and maximum brightness level of 1300nits.

China

On its back is the phone’s main camera which is equipped with a Sony IMX582 48MP sensor and f/1.79 6P lens that is being accompanied by an 8MP f/2.2 ultrawide camera and 5MP f/2.4 telemacro camera. A 20 MP f/2.4 selfie camera completed F3’s photography and videography hardware.

The F3 also carries a 4520mAh battery that supports a fast charger with a power rating of up to 33W which is also included in the box alongside the phone. Yes, the Hi-Res Audio certified phone is still equipped with an IR blaster as well as a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, Dolby Atmos enhancement, and dual speakers.

As for the X3 Pro, it is generally a souped-up variant of the X3 that was released in Malaysia last September. Hence, the phone still carries some of the same features as per the standard X3 including a 6.67-inch Full HD+ LCD display with 120Hz refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling rate as well as LPDDR4X RAM, 2MP macro camera, 2MP depth sensor, 20MP front camera, 5160mAh battery, and the support for 33W fast charger.

Malaysia

However, the X3 Pro is powered by a more powerful processor, the Snapdragon 860. POCO has also opted for faster UFS 3.1-based storage for the Pro model although somehow its main camera is equipped with a lower resolution Sony IMX582 48MP sensor together with 8MP ultra-wide camera.

Price-wise, the POCO F3 with 6GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage can be obtained for RM 1,399 while the 8GB/256GB variant goes for RM 1,699. As for the POCO X3 Pro, it will also feature similar memory and internal storage options with a price tag of RM 999 and RM 1,299 respectively.

MP

However, those who are planning to be early adopters of F3 should get it straight on 27 March through Xiaomi Official Store Global on Lazada, since the phone will be priced at RM 1,299 and RM 1,499 instead. If X3 Pro is your choice, then head on to Shopee’s version of the store on 24 March in which the phone will be made available for RM 899 and RM 1099.

New combustion engines will still be part of BMW line-up and development

March 19, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An interesting article on Penang.

BMW will continue developing new petrol and diesel engines even though the company is embarking on an aggressive push for fully electric vehicles (EV), where all model series to include a fully electric option.

BMW Group CEO Oliver Zipse told the media that BMW had no plans to stop developing the internal combustion engines (ICE), as it was confident customer demands will continue for many years to come, as noted by CNBC’s automotive reporter Phil LeBeau.

Australia

The topic came into light, picked up by Australia’s Caradvice, after an announcement by Audi CEO Markus Duesmann that the carmaker owned by Volkswagen Group would halt the development ICE due to strict Euro 7 emissions standards that present a significant technical challenge. The company will instead adapt existing ICEs to meet stringent emission guidelines.

CEO
Audi’s latest EV, the e-tron GT

Audi, together with marques in the Volkswagen Group have a much larger portfolio of EVs already in the marketplace, whereas BMW only premiered their new i4 electric sedan earlier this week.

BMW has also announced that MINI is set to become an all-electric brand by the early 2030s. The transition will begin with the all-new Countryman slated for sales in 2023 and targets 50% of all new MINI sales to be EVs in 2027. MINI recently introduced their first EV with the Cooper SE that is built on the current F55-generation hatchback, available in Malaysia priced from RM214,371.

Cooper SE
BMW Group’s current EV line-up: New iX, iX3, Concept i4, the RM256k i3S and the MINI Cooper SE

ICEs will remain popular and default choice for carmakers for continuous revenue and funds for investment into better EV technology. In a recent presentation by Kia Motors, EVs are estimated to only make up 34% of global new vehicle sales in 2030. Analysts forecast that China will be the leading market, with nearly half of new vehicles delivered are fully electric, with Europe just a few percentage points behind.

Kia Motors

In the US, demand for ICE (with and without electrification) is still expected to be strong at close to 80% of the market.

US District Judge Grants Preliminary Injunction To Xiaomi

March 16, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An interesting article about Penang.

The Trump administration, during its last days of the former US president’s term in January, had placed Xiaomi in the US Department of Defense’s (DoD) ban list, accusing the Chinese tech company of being a “Communist Chinese Military Company” or CCMC. Originally slated to be imposed with trade restrictions by the DoD, the move against Xiaomi was blocked by US District Judge Rudolph Contreras last Friday, who issued the company a preliminary injunction.

A preliminary injunction is a temporary order made by a court at the request of one party that prevents the other from pursuing a particular course of conduct until the conclusion of a trial on the merits. In Xiaomi’s case, is the US Department of Defense’s now-barred restrictions which were supposed to be placed in effect next week. Contreras said that such actions will likely bring “irreparable harm” to the company.

The judge expressed doubts that Chinese civilian companies such as Xiaomi are in any way affiliated with China’s military, and commented there is no evidence indicating that company is sharing information with the Chinese government. He also added that Xiaomi’s CCMC designation by the DoD was “likely made in violation of the APA (Administrative Procedure Act)  in that it was arbitrary and capricious”.

— Xiaomi (@Xiaomi) March 14, 2021

Via a press statement issued not long after Contreras’ ruling, Xiaomi expressed relief upon receiving the injunction which now exempts it from any potential restrictions by the US government – for the time being, at least. The company also revealed that it will continue to appeal to the US District Court for the permanent removal of the “Communist Chinese Military Company” designation by the US Department of Defense.

Vivo To Launch Zeiss-Equipped X60 Smartphone Series In Malaysia Soon

March 8, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An interesting post about Penang.

Vivo Malaysia, through its social media channels, has confirmed that it will launch the new X60 smartphone series locally soon. The series, which were launched in China back in late December last year, consists of a standard and a Pro model – with a high-specced Pro Plus variant introduced later in January 2021. The mutual selling point for all three models are Zeiss-enhanced optics for their respective camera setups.

To recap, the standard Vivo X60 features a 6.56-inch flat AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ support, an under-display fingerprint sensor, as well as a 32MP front-facing in-display camera. Under the hood, it is equipped with a Samsung Exynos 1080 5nm chipset, and memory configurations of up to 12GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The phone runs on Vivo’s new Android 11-based OriginOS, and is powered by a 4,300mAh battery with 33W USB-C fast charging support – the largest among the three models, surprisingly. Photography-wise, the vanilla variant sports a triple camera setup which consists of a 48MP main, 13MP portrait with 2x optical zoom, and a 13MP ultra-wide sensor.

Some of the specifications on the X60 Pro are similar to the standard model – mainly in terms of chipset, screen features, operating system, fast charging support, selfie shooter, and three of its rear cameras. This variant comes with a curved 6.56-inch display, a slightly smaller 4,200mAh battery, and an additional 8MP periscope camera with 5x optical zoom capability on its back. Unlike its other X60 siblings, the Pro variant is only offered in one memory configuration: 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage.

The Pro Plus variant, on the other hand, differs greatly from the other X60 models in terms of hardware – so much so that it could be classified as a flagship-tier smartphone, unlike its midrange siblings. Instead of an Exynos chip, the Vivo X60 Pro Plus features the high-end Snapdragon 888 SoC, along with up to 12GB RAM and a maximum of 256GB of internal storage. Meanwhile, on its back is a quad-camera setup consisting of a 50MP main, 8MP periscope telephoto with 5x optical zoom, 32MP telephoto with 2x optical zoom, and a 48MP ultra-wide sensor with onboard gimbal stabilisation. The other specifications of the Pro Plus (i.e. its display, battery, selfie camera, etc) are similar to the Pro variant.

Vivo X60 Series Launching in Malaysia Soon
The standard, Pro and Pro Plus variants of the Vivo X60 series.

Vivo Malaysia has yet to reveal any information regarding the X60 series’ expected launch date and local pricing. For reference, the starting prices of the standard and Pro Plus variants in China are at RMB3,498 (~RM2,199) and RMB5,000 (~RM3,142) respectively, while the Pro variant is priced at RMB4,498 (~RM2.828).

HMD Global Under Investigation For Alleged Data Transmission To China

April 10, 2019 By Keith Leave a Comment

Penang Malaysia tips.

All new article just produced by Lowyat.NET. Potentially 1 of the finest generators of info you can find.

HMD Global, the company that took over the Nokia brand from Microsoft, is currently being scrutinized by the Data Inspectorate of Finland. After a user discovered his Nokia 7 Plus was transmitting personal data to China.

Henrik Austad, a Nokia 7 owner was monitoring traffic from his phone. To his surprise, the device was sending unencrypted information to somewhere in China. The information being sent included the device’s location, his phone’s serial number, and SIM card number.

China

According to NRK, Norwegian public broadcaster, the data was sent to a Chinese server under the domain “vnet.cn”. Further investigation revealed that the domain is part of the state-owned telecommunications company, China Telecom.

HMD Global reportedly admitted to NRK that it was sending data to China, but said it was due to a software error and that the issue was resolved in a January software update. The Finnish company also claimed that the phones did not send any sensitive information that could identify owners.

China Telecom

Reijo Aarnio, the Finnish Ombudsman (public advocate) for Data Protection, said that he would investigate if any data breaches occurred and if legal action had to be taken. He implies that it could be a violation of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) legislation, and if found guilty, HMD Global could end up with some really stiff penalties.
