Zen 161 @ Beach Street, Georgetown, Penang.

April 2, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

A really good article about Malaysia.

Add Zen 161 to your cafe hopping list the next time you are checking out the cafes in central Georgetown. Zen 161 is a successor to Gayo Coffee, a couple of shop lots away from the popular China House. The place took quite some time to renovate and it is now currently in its soft-launch period. The minimalist interior is cozy and welcoming, with a splash of white and grey hues. For now, the place has a menu offering light snacks (some Sandwiches) and desserts, no mains at the moment. There are also some pastries and cakes of the day on display near the Barista counter. The price points are of mid-range but the selection is rather limited and the quality can be a little inconsistent for now.

Oolong Peach Tea (Rm 15/ pot)

We picked one of the pastry items on display- the Vanilla Raisin Scone was served with some butter and jam but the texture was rocky hard. It was so dry and hard that we found it hard to finish, we took a bite and gave up the entire piece. The made to order Raspberries Crumble Bar was much better, the Raspberries Crumble Bar were moist and crumbly, though slightly sweet, the berry flavor was bold and the Vanilla Ice Cream was not too shabby either. But for Rm 18, we thought the price was rather steep.

There are so many cafes to explore such as Urban Daybreak, China House, Norm Micro Roastery, among many other well-regarded cafes around town. Being one of the most notable cafes in George Town, Narrow Marrow has been operating at Carnavon Street for the past few years. Frequently visited by many local artists, this spot is no stranger to Instagram with well-curated furniture and art pieces. The name, Narrow Marrow, is highly influenced by its narrow interior. Well, it appears that the new location is pretty spacious.
