This Multitalented Young Chap (Street dancer, Designer, Barber) Now Sells Curry Mee at Butterworth to Stay Afloat

July 20, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An interesting post on Malaysia.

We’ve read and shared quite a number of stories where people took a different path in their careers to stay afloat during this trying time. This multitalented young chap who resides in Butterworth is a street dancer, graphic designer, videographer, and barber before the pandemic hits. Now, he’s running a curry mee stall to make ends meet.

According to Malay Mail, the 31-year-old Low Sawming is a young man full of stories, with diverse work experiences. Not only is he a street dancer, a dance instructor, graphic designer, videographer, but also a barber. He’s been in the dance industry since he was 13.

Low worked as a graphic designer in Johor for over 10 years before coming back to Penang to help out his mother in the hairsalon. He also filmed international dance competitions to promote the art in Malaysia. Then, he founded his own dance studio, Uptown Soul Art Station, with a corner dedicated for “barber space.” However, the indefinite lockdown and MCO has severely affected his business.

In order to stay afloat and make ends meet, he and his girlfriend now runs roadside stalls selling breakfast sets and 97 White Curry Mee along Jalan Murni 1 in Butterworth. The curry mee recipe was passed down from his late grandfather who was a curry mee hawker.

While the hawker business has helped him and his family go through this tough time, Low still wishes to go back to his usual career when things allow again. After all, being a hawker is major departure from his usual profession.

July 16, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

An interesting article on Penang.

TL;DR

  • Penang is hoping to enter Phase Three of The National Recovery Plan (NRP) by next month
  • To achieve that, 40 percent of the state’s adult population will have to receive two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine
  • The maximum dose capacity at PPVs must achieve 20,000 doses daily
  • Chief Minister urged Penangites to work together to ensure that the thresholds are met.

According to New Straits Times, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that Penang is aiming to enter Phase Three of NRP within the next month.

In order to do so, all vaccination centres (PPV) have to ensure that 40% of the state’s adult population will receive two doses of vaccine by next month.

“Based on the operations at the PPVs, the maximum dose capacity which we need and must achieve is 20,000 doses daily. The state Health Department, together with the state-level Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF), must ensure that this target is met,” Chow said.

The Chief Minister also urged Penangites to work together to ensure that the thresholds of Phase Three of NRP are met.

To ease into Phase Three of NRP, the average daily cases will have to drop to below 2,000. The public healthcare system also has to be at a satisfactory level, with the rate of bed usage in ICUs dropping to a sufficient level. Not to mention 40% of the country’s population have to receive the second dose of the vaccine.

So far, Penang had surpassed the vaccination rates of 10 per cent for the adult population with 10.1 per cent. The usage of Intensive Care Units (ICU) is at moderate level, while the Capacity to Respond is at a sufficient level.
