Coffee Cave By Toh Soon Cafe 多春茶室 @ Bishop Street, Georgetown, Penang.

September 2, 2019 By Keith Leave a Comment

This blog post comes courtesy of kenhuntfood.com. Great reviews backed up with some great photos too.

A new venture by Toh Soon Cafe 多春茶室 (popular for Toasts grilled over Charcoal fire and Hainanese Coffee), Coffee Cave has modern take with a fusion menu that has a blend of Western and Oriental menu. The newly opened branch can be found at Bishop Street and has a clean, well-renovated interior (no drains nor not tucked in a back lane) and proper tables and chairs. It feels like a standard modern cafe… though the menu seems to be a little confusing. The regulars’ favorites are there (except Nasi Lemak), with quite a handful of new Western addition (like Salad, Steak, grills, Pasta etc). Not too sure how many are willing to come here for Western food but they certainly have rooms for improvements… in terms of service and food quality.

The main menu will not be ready until 11 am, so if you are there for breakfast, the choices are limited to Toasts, Salads and Soups. Not too sure if the Toasts were grilled over Charcoal fire but they were a little too dry to our liking. The Kaya and Peanut Butter spreads were alright though. Adding salt to the wound, our Hard Boiled Eggs were overcooked…. certainly not the quality we would expect from a Hainanese Toast specialist like Toh Soon.
The Caesar Salad was a complete mess drowning with Mayonnaise, it was a little heavy on the palate with the amount of dressing. Soto Ayam on the other hand, was standard-average; not a bad choice if you needed something to warm up the tummy.

34 Bishop @ Bishop Street, Georgetown, Penang.

Penang Malaysia tips.

The following submission was indeed produced courtesy of Ken Hunts Food. They frequently provide videos of the best quality so are no doubt one of my must-watch writers. You are going to enjoy.

Replacing the lot previously occupied by Simply Wang Thai is 34 Bishop, a newly opened cafe right next to Two Frenchies on Bishop Street. The name surely does not ring a bell (except the location) but in actual fact, it is a cafe offering Western menu… as well as some local delights. Step in the place and you will find a huge aquarium in the middle of the cafe, with a few eye-catching polka dot Stingrays. You will then notice they are all over the place… on the menu and mural paints on the wall but it has no direct relationship with what the place offers (except that there is only one Stingray dish on the menu). Options are pretty safe here with good consistency and reasonable prices; but sometimes, the serving time takes a little longer than other places.

We were there on one of the early Chinese New Year days and the serving speed was very slow. It took them a little less than an hour to serve the mains and another half an hour for the dessert. We were quite disappointed with their serving speed and hope that it was because of Chinese New Year and nothing else.

Both Pasta dishes did not disappoint… with Miso Wafu Pasta stands out more. The Spaghetti was al-dentely cooked and served with rich and creamy Japanese-styled Goma sauce. The Miso flavor was not strong but the Sesame flavor was bold. The sauce felt a little salty at the beginning but it gets better when the Spaghetti was well-mixed together. Lamb Stew with Garlic Toasts was the star dish of the day, the meat was tender and the flavor-combo was beautifully done. The accompanying Garlic Toasts were not shabby either, the texture was fluffy and soft, almost like buttered Brioche. The seasonings were however, on the heavier side. We ended the meal with their Bananas Foster French Toast… ordinary ersatz Toast served on a bed of Caramel sauce. It did not seem convincing at first but the Caramel sauce was delicious. It was not saccharine sweet but just good enough at comfortable level, we were a little let down with the choice of Toast though, Brioche might work better in this case.
