No More SMS TAC For Maybank2u Bill Payments and IBG Transactions Starting 15 March

March 12, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

A really good post on Penang Malaysia.

Maybank has recently announced that it will discontinue the usage of SMS-based Transaction Authentication Number (TAC) for bill payments and Interbank GIRO (IBG) transactions for its online banking platform, Maybank2U. The new policy will be in place starting from 15 March 2021.

Customers will then have to utilize the bank’s Secure2u feature to authorize these transactions. For those who are not familiar with it, Secure2u essentially tied your Maybank2u user ID to one particular phone or tablet for security purposes.

bank
The Secure2u feature inside the Maybank2u MY app.

Secure2u has two main functionalities with one of them being the Secure TAG generator which provides the 6-digit Secure TAC directly on customers’ device that they can use for selected transactions. The other function under Secure2u is called Secure Verification which would ask for customers’ authorization via a notification that would appear on their device after the transaction is initiated.

Secure2u is not something that customers would receive by default as they have to opt-in for it through the Maybank2u MY app or website. Also, do take note that the Secure2u can only be obtained through Maybank2u MY app as it is not available on the newer MAE by Maybank2u app.

The MAE app has another approach called One-Tap Authorisation although it is generally similar in nature as per Secure2u’s Secure Verification. Right now, transactions that are initiated via the Maybank2u website and Maybank2u MY app will have to use Secure2u while naturally, One-Tap Authorisation will cover transactions that are commenced through the MAE app.

One-Tap Authorisation inside the MAE by Maybank2u app.

This is not the first time that Maybank has made Secure2u mandatory for its customers. In fact, it was only a few days ago on 8 March that the bank has implemented the policy where all Maybank2u transactions of RM 3,000 and above can only be authorized using Secure2u.

Not only that, Maybank has also stated that the Secure2u is now the only method that can be used to authorize all transactions through Maybank2u MY app. The SMS TAC option will only be provided if you initiate transactions of under RM 3,000 through the Maybank2u website but then again, that option will not be made available once you enabled Secure2u for your account.

Interbank

For the longest time, Maybank has claimed that Secure2u is much safer than the SMS TAC. This is indeed a sound argument considering that there are indeed tools that can be used to intercept SMS TACs in addition to the existence of SMS TAC scams.

However, the condition of the Internet connection on your device could affect the ability to receive Secure Verification promptly which could be quite critical for some customers out there. Nevertheless, it seems that Maybank is currently on a mission to get everyone on board the Secure2u method whether you like it or not.

Cuisine 18 @ King Street, Georgetown, Penang.

March 6, 2021 By Keith Leave a Comment

A great post about Penang.

The spot previously occupied by REVE Kitchen and Dessert Bar at King Street (right next to Public Bank Penang Main Branch) is now taken up by Cuisine 18, a new restaurant offering a French-inspired menu. There are only minimal changes to the interior but the addition of curtains that block the sunlight from flowing in does introduce a romantic touch to the place. The menu offering is not too big but sufficiently covers all range of diners (from Fish to Chicken and Red Meat), the price points are of mid-average but the Course menu offers better values. A pretty decent restaurant for some solid French-inspired dishes without putting a dent on the wallet.

[Brunch Menu] Seafood Anchovies Pasta (Rm 32)

The Brunch Menu is available daily until 2 pm, it offers a few choices priced from Rm 24 with a complimentary serving of Soup of the Day and Dessert. We started our brunch with their Onion Soup, which was the Soup of the Day. The Soup was beautifully cooked with the right seasoning and sweet-tasting Onion flavor, best of all, it was served to us piping hot with a piece of Cheese toast. Contented with the Soup, the mains were not disappointing. The Egg Benedict was carefully cooked with a great consistency- the Eggs were perfectly poached but the Hollandaise sauce could carry bolder flavor. The Seafood Anchovies Pasta was good either, there was a distinctive Seafood sweetness in the dish and the Spaghetti was al-dentely cooked; can’t say the Anchovy flavor was bold but it was overall, a delicious dish. The Poulet Roti (French Roast Chicken) was less-satisfying though, it was nothing out of the ordinary. Overall, we thought it was pretty good value for a 3-course meal.
