CUB PRIX OPENING LEG POINTS TOWARD INTENSE SEASON
The 2012 PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship commenced on a strong note in Batu Kawan, Penang last weekend, pointing towards an exciting season filled with intense competition and new rivalry across the classes.
ZAQHWAN SEALS FIRST CP130 CAREER WIN IN BATU KAWAN
While most expected usual suspects to take hold of the game, it was Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi who stole the limelight in the CP130 category. The 17 year old Pachie Yuzy Honda Racing rider surprised the contingent to bag his first CP130 career win, placing seniors in the shade and become the third rider after Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah (PETRONAS Syntium Moto Yamaha Raceline) and Mohd Ramdan Mohd Rosli (PETRONAS Syntium Moto Yamaha AHM) to claim a chequered flag in the premiere class while still in their teens.
Additionally, last weekend’s win marks Zaqhwan’s second podium in the highly-competitive series following his debut last season to which he placed third in Kangar, Perlis.
Where else Mohd Iskandar Raduan proves he still has it to win the CP115 category and Mohd Izzat Zaidi Salehan is determined to restore Motul Yamaha YY Pang’s good name following a strong show in the WIRA class.
Given all that, Championship promoter, Safe Aim Mutual Sdn Bhd (SAM), Promotions Director, Ron Hogg assured Cub Prix fans can expect an exciting year ahead as the competition is very much open across the board.
“Round 1 was a hint of the many exciting things to come,” he said.
” We are still in the early stages of the Championship and most teams have yet to deliver full capabilities as the majority are still in search of the right setup but overall we had a great race weekend. Despite rushing to make preparations, this did not hinder the teams from putting up a good fight in Batu Kawan as all the open-make classes lap record was smashed. Therefore it’s only natural things are to heat up in the upcoming rounds.
” This also means Round 1 winners will have to work extra hard to maintain their lead because based on what went down last weekend, the competition is very much open in all the classes and any of the contestants stand a chance to win.
“In addition, Batu Kawan also saw the highest participation the Championship has had for an opening round, with 157 riders in total from all categories including the Honda Wave Junior Challenge which features brand new faces, the Yamaha 135 Super Series PETRONAS and Privateers. Usually it would take a couple of races before we reach a high-volume entry list,” added Ron.
The following round of the biggest national motorcycle racing event is set to be held at Stadium Sultan Mizan Gong Badak in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu this 13 and 14 April.
