Its director, Muhamad Husni Mahmud, said the department had also reached accident reduction rate of 14 per cent last year, surpassing the 10 per cent target set by the Road Safety Council.

He said the number of deaths due to road accidents in Penang had been declining from 400 in 2012 to 381 in 2013, to 378 in 2014 and to 321 last year, with 70 per cent of the fatal accidents in Penang involving motorcyclists and their pillion riders.

"Motorcyclists made up the largest number of victims in fatal accidents and they comprised mostly factory workers and students riding without licence.

"As such, for this year, we are planning to give extra focus on the two groups during our road safety awareness campaigns and programmes," he told reporters after the launch of the road safety campaign in conjunction with Chinese New year here today.

At the event, 500 reflective stickers, 50 safety vests and 10 festive hampers were distributed to lucky road users.
