Hyundai and Motional, a global leader in driverless technology have revealed the IONIQ 5 ‘Robotaxi’ with Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities, allowing it to safely operate without a driver. For more info on what Level 4 entails, click here.
The IONIQ 5 robotaxi is Motional’s first commercial vehicle and will begin transporting public passengers in 2023 through a partnership with ride-sharing provider, Lyft. The robotaxis will be deployed in major cities in the US, starting with Las Vegas.
There are over 30 sensors attached to the robotaxi including cameras radars and lidar sensors, to provide 360-degree view, hi-resolution images, and ultra-long range object detection for safe autonomous driving.
Motional’s proven driverless technology will be the focal point of the IONIQ 5, with self-learning abilities based on real-world data to allow the car to safely navigate itself through different driving situations and environments.
Inside, the IONIQ 5 not only provides space for work and relaxation during the autonomous ride but also rider-focussed interfaces to allow riders to interact with the vehicle; to make an unscheduled stop for example.

“Through our strategic partnership with Hyundai Motor Group, it enables us to manufacture a robotaxi that’s both highly safe and reliable, and is cost-optimised for global production. We’re focused on mass commercialisation, and the IONIQ 5 robotaxi is built for that purpose,” said Motional, President and CEO, Karl Iagnemma.
To ensure the safety of the riders, Motional is able to re-route the vehicle to a new and safer path in the event of an emergency with remote vehicle assistance.
Motional has so far moved hundreds of thousands of customers through its self-driving service on the Lyft network in Las Vegas, the world’s most-established public robotaxi fleet.
