GEORGE TOWN: A gang of female thieves, specialising in stealing jewellery, were brought down by Penang police last night. The gang, comprising four Sri Lankan women, also included a man, who is an Indian national, in their ranks.
The gang were arrested in Jalan Penang. Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the gang specialised in stealing jewellery by cutting off the valuables from their suspects. Their targets, said Rahim, were usually the elderly.
"They are adept at snipping off the jewellery from their victims without being detected," he told a press conference today. Rahim said police were made aware of the gang when five victims, aged between 50 to 70 years old, lodged police reports upon realising that their valuables were missing after returning home.
“The losses are estimated to be about RM30,000,” he said Abdul Rahim said a remand order would be applied against the gang to facilitate further investigations for theft under the Penal Code.
He urged those attending that Thaipusam celebration to be careful with their valuables. He did not discount the possibility there were similar groups out there.
Abdul Rahim said the Thaipusam celebration in Penang was going on smoothly so far and assured devotees and visitors that police were doing their best to ensure the safety and security of everybody.
On the three houses in Taman Sembilang Prai damaged by “coconut bombs” thrown into the compound yesterday, Rahim said police had identified those involved and will make the arrests soon.
