Flamin’ good burgers

November 26, 2013 By Keith Leave a Comment

Opened not so long ago, this simple burger joint in Tanjung Bungah has become a bit of a surprising hit amongst both the expat and local community, consisting as it does of just plastic tables and chairs placed in the large forecourt of the Sunflower Bakery every evening.
This could be for various reasons: the alfresco seating which allows diners to enjoy the night air (although if it does rain fear not: there are umbrellas which fit over the tables and even, should it take a turn for the worse, a large overhead canopy).

It might even be that although small, the unpretentious, pork-free menu lists some tasty and quite reasonably priced items.
Although there are daily specials, soups and pastas available, the main food served is, as the name would imply, flame-grilled home-made hamburgers. These come in various configurations and buns, of which the most popular is probably the sesame-seed topped charcoal ones.
Specially made for them to their own recipe, these rather sinister-looking black breads are one of the latest novelty foods to hit the F&B scene, and are considered healthy as they are cleansing, and supposedly help the process of digestion as they absorb internal gas when consumed.

“We don’t add cereal,” multi-tasking proprietor Bruce Ng told me, in between flaming up the burgers, preparing the pastas, and generally keeping an eye on the smooth running of the place. Everything comes with curried chips – deep-fried chips sprinkled with salt and curry powder – an innovation they thought of because they wanted to offer something different.
Locals, as we all know, like it spicy. It’s really rather excellent value as prices start from just RM9.”We want to keep prices low for our regulars,” Bruce added. Although there’s beer on offer, you can bring your own wine, as they don’t charge corkage. A branch of Hamburgers Inc “Epicurean Gourmet Burgers” has opened in Gurney Paragon’s Just Food food court.
