The Playwright
K.S. Maniam is a prolific writer with novels, plays and numerous short stories to his credit. His important body of work has been described as “imbued with the vibrancy of the Malaysian landscape, both human and physical”. In 2000, he received the Raja Rao Award for his Outstanding Contribution to the Literature of the South Asian Diaspora in New Delhi.
His play, The Sandpit: Womensis has been the subject of numerous local and international academic papers, and his iconic plays of the 1980s and 1990s and has been restaged several times by Five Arts Centre (1991 and 1994), and directed by Krishen Jit.
Thus this new staging of The Sandpit after 18 years by a different director, Chee Sek Thim, is a highly anticipated event.

Jean is sleepwalking through her life until she answers a dead man’s cell phone. It turns out to be a wake-up call that sends her on a date with the dead man’s brother, a drinking binge with his wife and a mysterious rendezvous with his mistress. Not to mention trips to the afterlife and the black market. In this quirky modern adventure, Jean re-connects to her own spirit and learns that life is for the living. She’s picking up the missed calls he left behind.
