Chef Wan out to promote Penang’s culinary delights

PENANG’S spot on the world cuisine map is set to get a leg up if Malaysian celebrity chef Datuk Redzuawan Ismail, better known as Chef Wan, gets his way.

Redzuawan wants to showcase the island-state’s culinary delights to the world this November by getting Tourism Malaysia and a host of corporate sponsors to support for Penang to host the prestigious “Gourmand World Cookbook Awards” event here in November.

Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, Penang was selected by travel writers of the online version of the  Daily Telegraph newspaper in the United Kingdom (UK) as one of “The 50 Best Hotels in the World.”  The  selection was announced on 31 December 2010.

The Daily Telegraph is the leading newspaper in the United Kingdom with a daily circulation of over 600,000 copies, surpassing other dailies such as the Times, Guardian and Independent.  The Daily Telegraph’s online version is the third most visited United Kingdom newspaper website with 1.7 million daily browsers.

Burmese music on Penang

Burmese Music festival planned for Malaysia, Singapore

Rangoon (Mizzima) – Malaysia-based Maha Nan Restaurant will present a ‘Stars of the Century’ music festival in Malaysia and Singapore in early February. Fifty-two  Burmese singers will participate in the festival.

 

At a press conference at the City Start Hotel in Rangoon on Friday, Than Naing, a singer in the band Playboy, told Mizzima: ‘This is the first big music festival of Burmese singers outside Burma. In the past, at most 15 Burmese singers could participate in a festival-in-exile’.

A music show will be held in Bukit Jalil indoor stadium in Kuala Lumpur and in the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) in Penang, Malaysia, on February 3 and 4, respectively. On February 5, a show will be held in an indoor stadium in Singapore, a festival organiser told Mizzima.

Penang Hill Funicular Train Service

Penang Hill Train Service Delayed

penang hill funicular delayedGEORGE TOWN: The new Penang Hill funicular train service, which was expected to resume this month, has been delayed until at least March as the authorities are still carrying out safety tests.  

A source said the new train was being tested and the service fine-tuned to ensure that it was fully operational.
“We are in the final stage now and the progress is smooth,” he said.
