“Certainly it is a brave work…. is penetrating and the socialist realist stereotypes are deliberately employed and transcended rather than merely repeated” – Carol Rumen, Times Literary Supplement.

9th February 2012, Kuala Lumpur – ACX Productions and The Actors Studio Teater Rakyat proudly present Dear Elena Sergeevna, a classic controversial production made infamous in Soviet Russia, and since then being banned in the 80’s. It has been staged all across Europe. The Malaysian premiere of Dear Elena Sergeevna, directed by Deric Gan, written by Russian playwright Ludmilla Razumovskaya will open in Stage 1, Performing Art Centre Of Penang (penangpac) on the 17th and 18th March 2012.

This is a play that has made a worldwide impact. It recounts the story of four students who visit a teacher one evening, on her birthday in an attempt to persuade her to hand over a key lock so that they can change test scores. Their maths teacher, Elena finds herself in a predicament when her students begin coercing her.

The play raises questions concerning the education method and system. It plays with issues such as humanity, humility, victimization and cruelty. The audience will be thrilled as the play unveils a darker side of the students, our future generation. Featuring ADA Award winner; Amelia Tan, Easee Gan, Jinnie Lim, Giant Liang and Azov Sim.

Deric Gan, director of the production says, “This Russian play has impacted me deeply, because of its subject matter and the dramatic tension. This play is also an inauguration concluding my 30 years of studying. I’m not in any way trying to criticize our Malaysian education system. I just want to shed new light on the subject. It gives me great pleasure to stage Dear Elena Sergeevna for the first time here in Malaysia.”

?It’s a very impactful show. Its shall bring a lot of blessing to many people.

?The performers were all real, in a way, to an audience like me, they are not acting, instead, they are living the moment. They take on the soul of the characters and incorporated it in them. I was hugely entertained and deeply moved, really a show not to be missed
