Thor : The Dark World

alt

Action | Adventure | Fantasy

Director:Alan Taylor
Writers:Christopher Yost (screenplay), Christopher Markus (screenplay)
Stars:Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christopher Eccleston

Saw Thor Dark World yesterday, and by golly it was a hoot, good to see a comic adaptation that is not up its own arse as the last two Batman films were, lots of humour, great action, and really good to look at. again the 3d conversion was pointless, they really should stop doing this to get extra bucks, but there you go. The cast are all perfect all playing straight but also loose. I was worried when the title included the word Dark, used also for Star Trek into Darkness, but thankfully it relates literally to the Dark planet and the baddie who wants to turn the Universe from light to Dark. the humour was even better than in Avengers, and the cross referencing with the Marvel universe and characters was perfect, looking forward to seeing it again this time in 2d if i can find a cinemas that will be playing it on a large screen if not will wait for the DVD.

Escape Plan

altAction | Mystery | Thriller

Director: Mikael Hafstrom

Writers: Mile Chapman (screenplay), Jason Keller (screenplay)
Stars:  Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, 50 Cent

Came back from ‘Escape Plan’and I liked it. The idea was kind of refreshing and seeing 2 of the 80s action icons Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone together was great. Once again Arnold really stole the show for me with some of his best liners and action ‘n the movie. Stallone for me on the otherhand tried too hard but couldn’t match Arnold’s performance but both still managed to do a solid job. Hopefully, they’ll team up again in the future but with Arnold as the main hero instead next time. The rest of the cast played their rolls well too especially Jim Carviezel and Faran Tahir. Overall, an enjoyable movie and definitely in my top 5 of the year

Gravity

altDrama | Sci-Fi | Thriller

Director: Alfonso Cuarón

Writers:  Alfonso Cuarón, Jonás Cuarón

Stars:  Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, Ed Harris

Indeed the best space film ever done. This film transports you to space in every cinematic way possible. The visual effects are so brilliantly executed it makes you wonder if they shot part of it in space. Incredibly effective long takes throughout the film bring the realism and suspense that none other space film has ever done before. The acting is subtle and engaging. Sandra Bullock deserves another Oscar after this as well as best director for Alfonso Cuaron and Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki. I can’t recommend this film enough. Ground breaking, beautiful and technically perfect. Film schools will be studying this film in the future.

alt Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi

Director: Gavin Hood

Writers:  Gavin Hood (screenplay), Orson Scott Card (based on the book Ender’s Game by)

Stars:  Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld

Never having read the book I wasn’t hugely anticipating the release of this movie but my wife who read the book many years ago dragged me along. But from the opening scenes right to the climactic finale I was glued to the screen. Asa B and Harry F both give outstanding performances backed up by the totally brilliant supporting cast with a special mention to Sir Ben K big nose and everything. I loved the score, sfx and script all top drawer and a massive improvement on the directors (Gavin Hood) previous effort wolverine. I have read about the original authors controversial views and could not see anything that pollutes the film in anyway. Its also a good exercise for Harry F to get his space legs back in preparation for episode 7. In conclusion if you like a good sci fi spectacular go see this movie today, you will not be disappointed.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

alt Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi

Director: Francis Lawrence

Writers: Simon Beaufoy (screenplay), Michael Arndt (screenplay)

Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth

If you love Suzanne Collins, you know what to expect. Her novels are brutal, poetic, tragic, and artistic, with splashes of very grim humor. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is clearly Collins’s style, and I loved every second of it, from the cinematography (every shot is gorgeous and creative) to the story, which blends Shakespearean tragedy, murderous love, Gothic horror, and layered character drama. The characters are complex and there is plenty of moral ambiguity to go around. Even the most sociopathic character evokes sympathy. The direction is restrained and the performances are nuanced – like CHILDREN OF MEN, there are too many subtleties to take in on the first viewing. Suzanne Collins is an intelligent, bold, consistently surprising novelist. It’s unpredictable – scenes go from brutal and heart-wrenching to laugh-out-loud hilarious in an instant. This is closer to the classic scifi’s of yesteryear than any modern-day CGI-fest as far as being over-the-top brilliant, and it’s incredibly rich, thought-provoking, and rewarding.

If you like beautifully told dystopian stories (CHILDREN OF MEN) or are a fan of Suzanne Collins, seeing The Hunger Games: Catching Fire should be obvious. Easily one of the best films of 2013.

Frozen

alt

Animation | Adventure | Comedy

 Director:  Chris Buck, Jennifer Lee

Writer: Jennifer Lee (screenplay), Chris Buck (story)

Stars:  Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, Idina Menzel

I thought that Disney’s “Frozen” was wonderfully done. The central message was that of love, family, and self-sacrifice- which was pleasantly original and if I might add, needed these days. There are some sad/touching parts that might make you tear up a bit- especially if you have sister- and you may want to read up on before taking the kids. It wasn’t nearly as scary as “Tangled” and the humor was funny and appropriate (the occasional “butt” is said). The CG effects with the ice were really cool too. The music was weak compared to the older Disney classics but I must say better than the other recent Disney/Pixar films. A must-see for the family!

Homefront

Animation | Adventure | Comedy

Director:  Gary Fleder

Writer:  Sylvester Stallone (screenplay), Chuck Logan (based on the novel by)

Stars:  Jason Statham, James Franco, Winona Ryder

“Transporter” rocketed Statham’s name as a well rounded action star. Since then, most of his action films have felt the same, just with a different title. That was my mind set going into watch this film. “Homefront”, isn’t your usual Statham film, and it’s nice to see it play out the way it did. A change of pace for Statham movies, and hopefully a turning point for the actor. But let’s keep things simple: Story: Good Acting: Good Action: Very Good Pacing: Good If you’re looking for a good action film with a lot of heart, watch this. It’s not bad. 7.1/10

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Adventure | Drama | Fantasy

Director:  Peter Jackson

Writer:   Fran Walsh (screenplay), Philippa Boyens (screenplay)

Stars:   Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage

This must be the best movie of 2013. There is no movie that comes close to it recently. I must say, if you enjoyed the first one, you will enjoy the second one by far. I had the experience of seeing it early, and man, I made the right decision.
Even if you haven’t seen the first Hobbit movie, I suggest you see this. The action, the story line, the scenes, nothing comes close to it. If you enjoyed the Lord of The Rings trilogy, you will enjoy this.
I recommend everyone to go by yourself or with a friend and see this movie worth a life-time. It been a while since I seen a good movie, and this movie will not be beat. I can’t wait till the third one comes out.

If you enjoy following the game that is the box office, you’re undoubtedly wondering if The Avengers can hang on to its record of the biggest all-time domestic opening, now that The Dark Knight Rises is blasting its way into theaters this weekend. Batman will have a challenge overtaking the Marvel team, as this weekend’s movie doesn’t have the added 3D ticket prices. But if pre-sales are any evidence to go by, the contest is going to be tight– and the newest numbers from Fandango say The Dark Knight Rises might set that record after all. In a press release the ticket sales company just announced that the Christopher Nolan film accounts for 91% of today’s ticket sales, and almost every single IMAX midnight showing for tonight is completely sold out– so don’t count on showing up last minute and snagging a seat.

Following their Hall H panel at Comic-Con, director Sam Raimi, along with actresses Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams, held a press conference to discuss the new film Oz: The Great and Powerful, which already looks intriguing and compelling, just from its small glimpses.  The story is a prequel to the classic Wizard of Oz, telling how the selfish Wizard (played by James Franco) arrived in Oz from Kansas and went on to become a more selfless ruler and man.  Check out what they had to say after the jump. Question: Sam, with the Spider-Man movies, you showed that you have a great way of being able to stay true to the source material while still keeping the Sam Raimi touch, whether it’s your camera work or the sense of humor you inject in it.

It’s an understandable expectation that when one sees “new David O. Russell trailer,” they automatically ready themselves to see Mark Wahlberg’s face pop up once they hit “play.” But, oops, the Funky One was traded out as the lead of Silver Linings Playbook by Russell himself last summer in favor of someone else apparently willing to work for less pay (and less fuss) – Bradley Cooper. And while that’s the sort of casting might-have-been trivia we could all still be talking about years from now, hopefully the film’s first trailer will silence that, because it’s hard to imagine that Wahlberg could infuse the part of bonkers old Pat Solitano with as much desperation and joy as Cooper appears to do in just two minutes.

I’ll admit to not knowing much about Jim Grant’s, writing under the name Lee Child, Jack Reacher books, though I’m led to believe the character is a giant, wrecking machine of a man, killing a villain with one punch to the head. Not something you think of when you see Tom Cruise, but the man has shown time and again he does action with the best of them, and while this first trailer for Jack Reacher, based on the novel One Shot, doesn’t give much away, it does have me itching to see more. Hey, remember that crazy story that came out a few years back about a McDonald’s employee who had been taken into a back room, strip searched by her manager and forced to do other lewd acts, all because they had been ordered to do so by a caller claiming to be a police officer? This was part of a series of hoax calls perpetrated by one man over the course of a decade, and in most cases, he was able to get people to do just about anything he wanted merely by posing as an authority figure. The story brought up all kinds of questions about psychology and human nature, essentially echoing the findings of the infamous Stanford prison experiment. Director Craig Zobel (Great World of Sound) decided to make a film about the incident called Compliance, and it sparked a lot of controversy at Sundance earlier this year where

The trailer is pretty intense, it’s hard to completely understand what we’re looking at due to the color scheme and fast editing. I can hope that the film itself isn’t so choppy. The last trailer for Take This Waltz was a small masterpiece, dominated mostly by a single monologue from star Michelle Williams that served as a perfect metaphor for the dilemma her character found herself in: Stay with her husband (Seth Rogen), or indulge in an affair with a handsome stranger (Luke Kirby, of HBO’s Tell Me You Love Me).
The new trailer spells out that plot more explicitly, but it still has its charms. Director Sarah Polley’s vibrant visual style is still readily apparent. And I especially like the notion that getting a dog isn’t a starter for a kid

Here’s a simple way to pitch Disney’s newest animated movie, Wreck-It Ralph: It’s like Toy Story, but with video games. Instead of physical toys coming to life when their owners aren’t around, it’s about the lives of video game characters when their players aren’t around. And as with Pixar’s most beloved franchise, Disney looks to have spared no expense when it comes to making sure its fantasy world of video games is filled with real world gaming icons.

Earlier in the week Thn brought you the new trailer for director Nicholas McCarthy’s intense new horror The Pact. The film stars newcomer Caity Lotz, Agnes Bruckner and Casper Van Dien, in the story of a pair of sisters, who when reluctantly travelling back to their childhood home, come up against a malevolent force, unwilling to let them leave.
The trailer does indeed look a step above the usual tripe like The Devil Inside and Paranormal Activity, so popular in the genre nowadays. The Pact is a fleshed out version of  McCarthy’s independent short film of the same name and below we have the new UK quad poster, as well as the fearsome first clip. The film hits cinemas 8th June.

On a long enough timeline, even the bike-messenger storyline gets recycled.
This is one of those things you’d hope that the opening stages of the Apocalypse might have taken care of.  These is no need for another bike messenger movie.  There was no need for the very first bike messenger movie which, to the best of my knowledge (and feel free to comment anything to the contrary), was the 1986 Kevin Bacon flick, Quicksilver.
Quicksilver was a bad movie, just so there is no confusion.  It was the story of a Wall Street hotshot who gives up the stock game (in the ’80s, mind you), becomes fascinated with bike messengers, and midway through the first act, becomes one himself.  What follows?  A whole lot of irresponsible bicycling and hamfisted car vs. bike, man vs. machine metaphors.

Skyfall, the 23rd James Bond adventure, arriving in the 50th anniversary year of the franchise, finally has a trailer. Last week a teaser poster emerged, extraordinarily late into the production. Teasing footage has been trickling onto the internet in the form of B-Roll and production diaries, but fans will have been waiting for the first trailer. And let me tell you, it does not disappoint.
As I type the trailer has been online for about half an hour. I’ve watched it at least ten times and the positive critical reaction is taking Twitter by storm. There’s a lot riding on Skyfall after a four year break for Bond because of financial problems at MGM. The last outing, 2008’s Quantum of Solace, was a turkey in comparison with 2006’s impressive Daniel Craig led reboot, Casino Royale. There have been various rumours about underwhelming action and a vastly reduced budget since production began. »

That’s it. It’s a wrap. The Tribeca Film Festival is over for another 12 months. And while it was an improvement from years past, despite a promising line-up the festival proved to be somewhat disappointing: most of the best regarded films (“2 Days In New York,” “Take This Waltz,” Searching For Sugar Man” being three prime examples) had premiered elsewhere, while the more high-profile, star-laden of their world or North American exclusives landed with a thud.
However, even while the festival still grapples with its own identity, there were some real gems in the line-up: there are a few films that justify whatever else we had to sit through in the course of the last few weeks. And let’s not forget the festival did secure “The Avengers” and “The Five-Year Engagement,” two films we loved (though try and ask any civillian who got into either and you’ll hear a lot of crickets). It’s been a big weekend and begining of the week for Kristen Stewart and the cast of Snow White and The Huntsman. Not only did they cast go through the press junkets over the last week and weekend, but they also attended an official cast photocall as well. Then today in London, the offcial world premiere of Snow White and The Huntsman took place, and Kristen and company were all in place with big smiles on the red carpet. As you can tell from some later pictures at the premiere, Kristen, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth appear to be pretty good buddies as well. Enjoy all the pictures from the photocall and premiere below:
See more of the photo call here and check out more premiere photos here and here.
While I kinda love Kristen’s dress from the back, I’m just not a fan of the front. It’s hard for me to admit this, because I always love Kristen’s dresses. Apparently Kristen was wearing Marchesa, and I just don’t think it stands up against Charlize’s Dior dress. Too much strange black lace in the front! It does help however when you have Chris Hamsworth at your side. Never mind the prince, I’ll take the huntsman!
Also, how cool is it to have a Castle in your photo call?!
What do you think of Krinsten’s Snow White and The Huntsman world premiere dress? Do you like the photocall cast pictures?

Robert Pattionson news: Bel Ami film box office Bel Ami’s box-office performance has been erratic since the Robert Pattinson film opened in late Feb./early March, depending on the territory. As of the end of April, Bel Ami had taken in $11,52m in eight countries. Not at all bad for a movie budgeted at $11.8m. Robert Pattinson’s Twilight popularity surely helped the independently produced Bel Ami film version of Guy de Maupassant’s novel gross a solid $3.14m in Russia and a not inconsiderable $1.93m in Italy and $1.14m in the United Kingdom. At the other extreme, in Singapore and Slovakia the period comedy-drama earned, respectively, $10,791 and $21,033, according to Box Office Mojo. Does that mean Pattinson and Twilight aren’t popular in those two countries? Not really. Instead, it could simply mean that the film’s Singapore and Slovakia distributors failed to raise awareness for thier movie. That happens time and again,Source: IMDB

‘Dark Shadows’ Featurette HD

alt

whats-on-penang-dark-shadows-featurette

113 min – Comedy | Fantasy | PG-13

Director: Tim Burton
Starring: Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer and Eva Green
It’s always interesting to get a behind-the-scenes look at a movie, and even more interesting when some of the principle people involved share their inspirations for the film. That’s exactly what we get with this official featurette for “Dark Shadows.”
Tim Burton and Johnny Depp both share with us some of their own inspiration for their roles in making this movie. It turns out that Depp has been inspired by plenty of vampires down through film history, from Nosferatu and Bela Lugosi all the way to Christopher Lee (who has a role in the film as well). Of course, his primary inspiration for this particular character came from Jonathan Frid’s (RIP) portrayal in the 1970s soap opera of the same name.
Check out the featurette below and let us know what you think. “Dark Shadows” opens on May 11th, 2012.

Hide Away (A Year in Mooring)

88 min – Drama | PG-13

Director: Chris Eyre
Starring: Josh Lucas, Ayelet Zurer and James Cromwell
For ambiguous reasons a man doesn’t take to the sea, but exiles himself besides the sea. Josh Lucas plays an unnamed man, credited as “Young Mariner” in A Year In Mooring (or should we say mourning) – the latest from Chris Eyre (Smoke Signals). Sparse is the dialogue and exposition as the Young Mariner we gather is young father of certain means. He’s dressed well, he’s able to purchase a boat that is a lousy investment and he holds no job at the opening of the film. We know very little and the film restrains itself from that big expected moment of exposition where all of the details are told to us. The exposition comes in the form of brief flashbacks of an uncertain time and incident, and perhaps is a bit too understated for the rhythms it builds.

Take This Waltz

116 min – Drama | 7 June 2012 (Australia)
Director: Sarah Polley
Writers: Sarah Polley
Stars: Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen and Sarah Silverman
Summer is for love and also for heartbreak, and both will be served up in Sarah Polley’s sophomore feature film “Take This Waltz,” a raw and tender look at a relationship under strain.

The film stars Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen as a young married couple, who find their bond tested when the former becomes attracted a new man played by Luke Kirby. Though not without minor complaints, pretty much everyone on the Playlist staff who has seen the film have liked it immensely, and really, it’s James Rocchi’s review from Tiff that hits the nail on the head in terms of the sharp and incisive lens Polley puts her characters under: ” ‘Take This Waltz’ is also, for lack of better words, infuriating and troubling — not because of what it gets ‘wrong,’ but because the things it gets right are buried under your skin like a splinter you can’t dislodge, »

Drama | Sport | 18 May 2012 (USA)

Stars: Brandon Routh, Gil Birmingham and Chelsea Ricketts
Have you seen any of the Paranormal Activity movies? How about The Last Exorcism? Good. Then you’ve seen everything that the low-budgetand generally generic. Apartment 143 has to offer. Oh, wait, there is a twist: the Pa movies take place in houses, and Tle is mostly set within a farmhouse. Carles Torrens” version takes place in an apartment. Hence the title. I’vejust spoiled the big surprise. One hates to be so glib and dismissive of an independent horror flick, especially one that was written by Rodrigo Cortes (director of the rather fine gimmick thriller known as Buried), but when a film has little to offer besides drab blather and a sparse handful of jolts, jumps, and ostensible twists that we’ve seen.

Director: Carles Torrens

Stars: Kai Lennox, Michael O’Keefe and Rick Gonzalez
Let’s face it, you can never go wrong with a “Bad News Bears” movie. You can replace the bears part with anything you want – ducks, birds, geese, whatever – as long as the basic storyline is the same – a bunch of misfits learn from a reluctant coach on thier way to becoming a great (or at least, decent) team. Throw in a troubled, wayward kid in there, the token Tomboy girl, and you’ve got yourself a feet-good soprts movie that caters to the family crowd. Now you can do what the “Bad News Bears” did and get them almost there, or you can go full-tilt for feel good status and have them actually win the Big Game. Either/or. That’s basically “Crooked Arrows”, which has “Superman Returns” Brandon Routh playing a Native American far removed from his Native American-ness, who has to coach the tribe’s lacrosse team.

Drama | PG-13 – 7 June 2012 (Russia)
Director: OI Parker
Writers: Jenny Downham (novel), OI Parker (screen play)
Stars: Dakota Fanning, Kaya Scodelario and Olivia Williams
There are roughly seven moths until our next (and final) Twi-hard fix, with “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” dropping in November. I don’t write that to bum you out. It’s more of an embrace-the-day statement. Appreciate these seven months of build-up because in all likelihood, these will be your last (unless you’ve already started obsessing over “The Hunger Games”).
That said, let’s get excited for summer movies season — the season that’s no longer just about blockbusters and indies that aren’t good enough for award season (although it’s still mostly that). When it comes to summer films starring “Twiligt” actors, we’re lucky enough to get two apiecefrom Kristen Stewart and Robet Pattinson; and these hot months will also feature appearances from Dakota Fanning, Ashley Greene, “Eclipse” alumnus Xavier Samuel and my imaginary girlfriend Anna Kendrick.
Half of themlook like solid films, too. The other half, well, let’s be honest.

Trevor Hogg chats with Academy Award-nominted visual effects supervisor Nick Davis. “It was more by accident that I fellinto that side of the industry,” states British Visual Effects Supervisor Nick Davis when discussing his career choice which he made two decades ago. “It was great place where you can learn all aspects of filmmaking and it was cutting edge. We were changing the way the films were being made and thought about; I still think that’s true today.” The son of a doctor, who had youthful dreams of becoming a professional soccer player, headed to America during the late 1980s. “When I started working very few companies were doing anything digitally; it was all done on optical printers, models and miniatures.” Then along came the digital revolution. “Hollywood went from having four to five companies to hundreds of companies around the world. Writers: Dale Fabrigar (story), Everette Wallin (story), and 1 more credit
Stars: Abigail Schrader, Samantha Lester and James Lynos
Towards the end of last week we revealed the new poster for new found footage creature feature ‘Area 407’ (previously known as ‘Tape 407’). The Dale Fabrigar and Everette Wallin helmed horror flick unleashed a very familiar looking poster which has got to have been heavily influenced by George A Romero’s ‘Diary of the Dead one-sheet. Thankfully however this new poster is a tad more original although it does sort of scream ‘Jurassic Park III’ to me. Abigail Schrader, James Lyons, Melanie Lyons, Samantha Lester, Ken Garcia, Samantha Sloyan, Brendan Patrick Connor, Everette Wallin and Jude Gerard Prest all star. Check out the new poster below and catch it in select theatres and on VOD in the Us this Friday!

Last summer fans of Texas football, and more specifically, the series “Friday Night Lights,” got some hope that there was more to come. Peter Berg revealed that he wanted to get a feature film off the ground centered on Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton picking up where the final episode of the show left off, and that work was happening to start getting it rolling. And then, there was pretty much radio silence on it, but now it seems it’s becoming more of reality.
Details recently chatted with both Berg and Britton, and though they remained cagey at first, the director laid out as Britton recounts: “So,I had a meeting at [executive producer/writer] Jason Katims” office. And we were talking about something else and I said, ‘Forget about all that.

Acouple years back during SXSW I started hearing some buzz about a horror film called The Loved Ones. Made in Australia back in 2010, the movie chronicled a night in which a psychotic girl and her father kidnap the girl’s dream dateon prom night. From what I heard about the movie it was twisted, deranged, insane and incredibly screwed up. Now the movie is finally getting sets for its release in the United States and so we have a trailer. From what I can rell, the gossip I heard about the film wasn’t wrong. Check out the preview below, courtesy of Paramount Pictures. The story followsLola (Robin McLeavy), a meek young girl who desperately want Brent (Xavier Samuel) to take her to the prom. Unfortunately, Brent already has plans to go to the dance with another girl, Holly (Victoria Thaine). Made furious by the embrassing rejection, Lola hatches »
