Suffolk House is an impressive place. The mansion house is quite probably Penang’s premier colonial building and now a venue for many leading state and private functions.
Suffolk House has seen some menu and personnel changes over the few years it has been open and the most recent is the appointment of Chef Wan Elmee as Head chef.
If, like me, you are a frequent visitor to Straits Quay then it will come as no surprise to you that some of the Islands best kept cullinary secrets are to be found here. It is then, with much joy that I have finally gotten around to sampling some of the best Mediterranean fare I have ever had, anywhere, here at Agua.
Karen Tan, the co-owner of Agua (Pascal Martin Daguet is the other co-owner who is based in Russia) very kindly spent the time explaining Agua’s menu and concept so that I could better understand where they were coming from and their emphasis on fresh quality ingredients put together in authentic recipes for the delight of Penangites and visitors alike.
Well it seems as if great minds think alike, CK Lam has already posted a great list of Christmas Feasts on offer – go check it out. Here are the posters for the restaurant offers just read more for the full list.
Well, the goose is as fat as it gets, Christmas is fast approaching and Santa is loading up his sleigh. Always at this time of year it is traditional to reflect on the year drawing to a close and the New Year looming. Has it been good to you, 2010? Are you looking forward to 2011 with relief or just hope for better things to come?
If food is thought of as fondly in your family as it is in mine then Christmas is all about sitting around a heavily overloaded table and surrounded by family and friends. Here are the offerings for Christmas Eve, Day, Boxing Day and New Years Eve.
As a recent arrival in Penang, whether you are a first time visitor or return visitor, you will be impelled to visit one of the many Hawker food centres scattered around the island. The most well-known Hawker Stalls for visitors will be found in Gurney Drive.
Located at the beginning of Gurney Drive next to the roundabout now whereas before they used to be spread out along Gurney Drive itself. An eclectic collection of stalls which really is the best introduction a new visitor can find.
There is a selection of most of the more common Hawker foods to try, many of them are from the longest established Hawker families operating on Penang, some stretching back for three or more generations.
For a comprehensive guide to what food is on offer please go to our Hawker food guide.
Here is a photo sample of what stalls are available here.

Feringgi Grill is among the city’s finest Western restaurants, the poultry and seafood are excellent, as are the veal, lamb and steak options. The restaurant has a Tudor-style ambiance and exudes old-school charm. Caesar salad is dressed and tossed table-side, perfectly pink Chateaubriand is carved and dressed with Choron sauce and homemade mustard. The views of the three hundred year old rain trees, the Andaman sea, gardens and beach are amazing. Watch the sun sink behind the Penang Hills at dusk from your table.
